DJ Computer Crunk is the latest offering from both Honeysmack and Supermercado Records, a homage to the Dr. of live acid techno Dr. Dave Heberfield. Honeysmack needs no introduction, among numerous impressive and equally strange career highlights includes an Aria nomination for his seminal hit 'Walk On By,' which was subsequently voted as one of the 100 greatest Australian dance tracks of all-time. Supporting Britney Spears' 2002 Crossroads tour in Australia, being twice nominated in Australia's top 50 DJs as a member of Acid Jacks duo and having his music exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; not to mention achieving a PHD from Monash University in live acid performance! We felt compelled to tribute the artist with a two volume remix series from leading international and local artists.

The track Finger to Finger fits Honeysmack's own description of his music as 'acid techno bangers,' a hard hitting, no nonsense belter that utilises the classic Roland TR-909 and TB-303 equipment to masterful effect. Volume 1. sees Luca Lozano, Nathalie Capello, Disruptive Pattern Material and Eddie Example reinterpret the track in a variety of inventive ways. Luca Lozano strips back the track and gives his remix a distinctly Klasse Wrecks feel. Nathalie Capello of Dansu Discs provides a house interpretation that is for the mid to early set time with musicality not normally found alongside Honeysmack's work. Disruptive Pattern Material of Rekids gets to business with a straight up Detroit techno interpretation melding perfectly with Honeysmack's hard hitting 909 percussion. Jani Ho, an unsung local hero and favourite of Dave Clarke provides the first of two of his remixes for the EP, his first electro remix provides a hardware laden homage and assured crate essential for true electro fans (his second remix features on volume 2). Label boss Eddie Example delivers the final number, with a dance floor orientated belter already lighting up Revolver Upstairs during his residency where feedback has been well received indeed. 

We hope you enjoy this rare homage to our local hero and hardware champion Dr. Dave Haberfield aka Honeysmack, a true pioneer and maverick of the Australian rave scene.

Outer Rim | Techno & Hard Tek | Tilt Shift Tuesday 6th Feb 2024

'Outer Rim' is the hard techno moniker of Shannon Briggs, a leading Melbourne taste maker and founder of local acid house label Supermercado Records. Shannon's contribution to Melbourne's electronic music scene is immense, having worked as a booker and music programmer for New Guernica, Boney, and Revolver Upstairs as well as releasing local and international artists on Supermercado Records, he has been a steady and sometimes silent contributor to the diverse sounds of Melbourne's house and techno scene. 

Previously associated with the jungle, acid, and breakbeat genres the pandemic saw him, like so many others, locked away with only the entire catalogue of music from human history at his fingertips! Delving deeper into the rave archives, he discovered the harder and more experimental edge of techno, falling in love with the sounds of Reeko, Oscar Mulero, and Surgeon ++ and becoming obsessed with the 'man-machine' concept from Detroit and Germany. Teaming up with with Linear System as a mentor, he has been slaving away in the studio perfecting the art of creating hard techno from nothing but the most basic of equipment in the authentic and original style, with an EP planned for release this year.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

Nathalie has been a staple of Berlin’s incomparable underground scene since 2014, playing the city’s joie de vivre open-air parties and peak time house sets at titans of the Berlin club circuit such as Salon zur Wilden Renate and Tresor. Hailing from Rotterdam, Nathalie’s Nightlife education was thorough and diverse. Her rave-forward pallet is unmistakable, commonly blending nostalgic breakbeats, golden-era vocal house, and blistering acid with the best hidden gems of the contemporary underground.

Nathalie has been steadily carving out a place for herself, featuring as part of Feel My Bicep’s mix series as well as multiple appearance on Berlin’s acclaimed HÖR broadcast series. If that were not enough, she has recently released thundering EPs on Jus-Ed’s Underground Quality imprint and Paloma Bar’s new label Paloma. She has earned a global reputation, having played throughout Europe, Latin America, and in Africa, and 2021 marks the start of her monthly radio show residency on Refuge Worldwide.
