DJ’ing since his formative years in the frozen Northern reaches of Yorkshire Johnston has been many things; Acid-House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Alpinist, Hardway Bros and Freelance Disco Consultant but it is his recent production work and now legendary club night that he has best become known for the world over. From the early 90’s institution that was Sabresonic to Disco Bloodbath, Sean has played at many of London’s landmark clubs. He also plays regularly at Berlin’s premier underground venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate, festivals in French castles and the Dalmatian coast, as well as across the whole breadth of this fine aural landscape we live in.

Black Light Smoke’s US-based imprint Death Decay Magic invites The Hacker, Cardopusher, Man 2.0 and Adrian Marth to remix tracks from the first three releases on the imprint.

After seven years of brand building as a podcast mix series, Death Decay Magic was launched as a record label in March 2020 by Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke. With a DIY ethos, Death Decay Magic explores the darker, eclectic realms of electronic music, bridging techno with EBM, minimal synth and post-punk.

Death Decay Magic Remixes Vol. 1 is a compilation remix EP, drawing on the first three Death Decay Magic releases; Black Light Smoke ‘Line and Shadows’, Daniel Holt ‘Traveler’, and Man 2.0 & Black Light Smoke ‘Holy Hammer’. Death Decay Magic invites remixes from The Hacker, Cardopusher, Adrian Marth, Man 2.0, and Black Light Smoke on a release that illustrates the labels blueprint perfectly: raw, edgy synth music with ghostly vocals; one foot in techno, the other stepping out into the unknown.

Zone Music boss The Hacker gets things underway with a crunchy remix of Black Light Smoke ‘Lines’ featuring crystalline leads, zapping synths and whirring stabs. Up next, Man 2.0 and Black Light Smoke’s ‘Bodywork’ gets a remix from Classicworks founder Cardopusher as he takes the remix into mystifying territories with revolving modulations bouncing elegantly off the chugging rhythm. Night Noise artist Man 2.0 follows by laying down an industrial-tinged electro remix of ‘Traveler’ with otherworldly atmospheres, gauzy textures and dynamic elements.
Italo Moderni label boss Adrian Marth follows with an interpretation of ‘Bank For God’ as the spiralling EBM sonics flow vigorously and the drilling rhythms get to work underneath. DDM honcho Black Light Smoke then finishes things off with a version of his track, ‘Your Own Hands,’ which fuses rubbery bass grooves, playful melodies and vibrant 909s.

PREMIERE | ALF CHAMPION - Lucidus Somnia (Lucas Croon 'Misterio' Remix) [Fucanglong Files] 2021

Lakeshouse (@lakeshouse) is a group of producers, artists and jazz musicians from Norway. Cowboy EP is their fourth release alongside various remixes and bootlegs and their first on on My Choice Recordings (@my-choice-recordings). Their previous work has received praise in both Mixmag and DJ Mag, as well as support from Alexander Robotnik, Bottin, RSS Disco, Andy Buchan and Diskjokke to name a few. This EP draws inspiration from both gay house-anthems and old spaghetti westerns. 

The opening title track Cowboy is a gimmicky vocal house-track propelled forward by a catchy arpeggio-bassline, underlined by snippets from horses, gunfights and clear nods to Norwegian space disco-pioneers like Lindstrøm and Todd Terje. 

Native is the Native American side of the coin. It too is founded on a funky bassline but has a more tactile and understated approach than the opening track; It's as if it underlines the cultural differences between the settlers and the people whose land they stole. Part deep house, part italo disco, part Norwegian madness. 

Closing it all is the K-Hole Dub-mix of Cowboy. This track feels like the marriage between the previous two. It's a percussive, psychedelic and dubbed-out affair where the original bassline is slowed down to half-time and everything feels like a neverending déjà vu. There's a KLF-like intro, haunted saxophones, sedated vocals and an insistent groove that demands your attention.

Roam Recordings kicks off 2022 with up and coming Canadian artist RJ Maxwell who brings forth two original electronic dance floor movers. The title track - Motherboard - is a driving energetic offering with melodic electronic underpinnings. The second original - Activate - is an upbeat chugger with a playful vocal. The EP is backed with three diverse remixes. The first is from Wonder Stories boss AIMES who infuses dark psychedelic energy into a shimmering remix of the original title track. After releasing their critically acclaimed debut single ‘Stillstand’ on Local Suicide’s label Iptamenos Discos the Austrian duo Wiener Planquadrat are returning with their new ‘Dschungel’ EP which includes remixes by legendary electro-punk producer T.Raumschmiere, London-based infamous artist Birds and the uprising disco producer Tech Support.

The B-side ‘AIV’ (short for Alles ist Viel) is a dark disco hymn composed of polyphonic plucked synths, classic 80s beat, and distorted arp brassy sounds, while the vocals evoke the wilderness of a tangled and jumbled mind.

Wiener Planquadrat is formed by Maximilian Atteneder from Catastrophe & Cure and Michael Weiler, a former member of Luv Shack's Burning Tears. Their work is a union of their two musical background: a mixture of indie, dark disco, and a decent portion of French electro, reminiscing the times they first met. 

In 2021, they released their critically acclaimed debut single “Stillstand”, which went up onto the top 10 tracks of Austria’s most important youth radio station FM4, was highlighted as track of the day by Byte FM, received glowing reviews on the blogosphere and was described as the “perfect feel-good- disco-track” by German leading electronic print magazine FAZE, while receiving support by DJs such as Joris Voorn, John Digweed, Phunkadelica, Sean Johnston & Damon Jee among others.

The ‘Dschungel’ EP is an electrifying collection of tracks showcasing each artists' distinctive style and colourful palette of musical artistry. It will be released on a strictly limited clear Dubplate 12” and made available digitally on all platforms on April 22nd, 2022.
