Since first emerging in 2016 Golan has won over progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, while landing standout releases via Beatfreak, Clubsonica Records, Or Two Strangers and Proton Music. A well received rendition of ‘Roads’ by Portishead marked Golan’s debut on our free download series in 2018, and now as 2021 winds to a close, he returns with an equally sought after, indie-dance revision of Sinead O’Connor’s hit ‘All Apologies’. Right on cue for extended action throughout the even busier part of the summer ahead of us, here comes Gespona's third Stil vor Talent transmission, 'Acridis Talk', after his previous two 2022-released studio efforts, 'Kune' and 'Magota'. Hailing from Barcelona, Gespona champions a sound both sensually deep and openly groove and percussion-focussed, which echoes well the type of sound he tries to bring on stage. Armed with his Elektron Digitone and Moog Sub 37, the Spanish producer pulls out a quartet of essentially tribal-minded tunes designed to fit any moment of the night, in terms of both rhythm and ambience, harnessed for proper explosive peak-time business and further spacious atmospheric sorties in equal measure.

Beating a martial pulse, 'Helicon' goes hard in the paint with its cleverly engineered mix of hi-intensity EBM tropes, sizzling tech outbursts and lavishly hued synth envelopes from outer space, gaining maximal momentum up until about halfway in, when the wildest break/drop combo ensures to have you taking a tumble into the greater void. A more subliminal, delay-heavy piece of 4x4 expression, the title-track 'Acridis Talk' trades the linear buildup of the opener for the kind of syncopate swagger one would be hard pressed to resist. Befogged under a thick haze of FX and processed machine talk, the track evolves into a fiery pseudo-acid/indus slasher, murky and oddly rousing as it gets. Perhaps the epitome of Gespona's signature moody ambivalence and thorough floor-destroying acuity.

Recorded in collaboration with fellow Barcelona-based Argentinian producer Djolee, 'Colorblind' showcases the housier, more atemporal facet of Gespona's work. Laying down a feverish assembly of soulful vocals out the classic mid-90s house repertoire and more exploratory keyboard work on a kosmische tip, the pair has us transfixed with their highly infectious blend of ancestral vibes and ultramodern groove. Together with Buenos Aires' rising talent Abuk, the Barcelona maestro shifts focus onto more intricate polyrhythms, treating the odd Latin / piano house classic to a vibrant facelift, as it nimbly swings the pendulum between elegant melodic brittleness and no-prisoner, bass-laden floor menace. A work of dual beauty and rugged power, hypnotic and entrancing from all angles.

Since its debut in 2017, Damian Lazarus’ annual ‘SPIRITS’ series on Crosstown Rebels has been a beacon for breakthrough artists, setting the label’s agenda for the year ahead. The sixth instalment in February is another meticulously curated lineup with ‘SPIRITS VI’ featuring a blend of new and recognisable talents, including Lauren Lane, Cristina Lazic, Iñigo Vontier, AJ Christou and many more.

London-based talent Cameron Jack kicks off what looks set to be a breakout year with ‘The Vision’, a bubbly and tropical cut with cosmic synths and loose, jumbled rhythms. Chris Bowl then brings his emotional style to the deep, rolling beats and fresh melodies of ‘Silent Plain’, while NY-born, LA-based house tastemaker Lauren Lane layers in smoky pads and tender whispers to her sublime deep house cut, ‘Fair Game.’ Next, German talent and Degree Records head Marc Lenz brings darker vibes to his track ‘People Are People’, while Rebellion artist Cristina Lazic and previous Lazarus collaborator Leia Contois combine for the alluring vocal soul and gritty minimal drums of ‘So Deep’.

Mexican Iñigo Vontier is a pioneer in his homeland after crafting a global reputation, and his twisted synths, shiny textures and steely drums on ‘That Trippy Sound’ prove why as they work you into a trance. Next is influential Manchester-based DJ/producer AJ Christou, who has released on the likes of Hot Creations and Cuttin’ Headz. His track ‘Back & Forth’ brings an infectious groove with plenty of flair and catchy drum funk, before TMPLE shuts things down with the deft, airy grooves and floating bass of ‘The Girl In The Room’, complete with its tender male vocals.

At the forefront of electronic innovation, Crosstown Rebels stands as a pivotal platform and record label, reflecting the genre’s diversity and housing an impressive roster that includes renowned artists and household names like Art Department, Maceo Plex, and Jamie Jones. With sub-labels Rebellion and Secret Teachings in tow, the imprint consistently and continuously expands its musical canvas, creating an immersive landscape for leading and emerging talents to thrive.

My hope is that someone out there can appreciate and find solace in my songs, as they were created from a place of despair and the desire to find my happiness in this life.
