Pretty Girl (Remastered)

In 1984, techno-rock band Spot The Dog, hailing from Lodi, CA, recorded "Adventures In Anxiety". Originally, the music was written by Kit Watson and Gary Bell, and was played live by their electronic duo Eye5. Lyrics were added by Patrick O'Shaughnessy when Eye5 was absorbed into the fallout from the explosion of Digits. Additional keyboards were provided by John Reed. Duncan Atkinson gave the song its guitar. A music video was produced for the song, and that video made it onto MTV's Basement Tapes competition in 1985, where it was resoundingly beaten. The video and original recording can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l133kFYVTfg. This is a brand new 2021 recording of the song. Performed, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by the original songwriter Kit Watson. Aside from voice, no analog instrumentation was used. It's all synths.

Something In The Science

In 2023, Landscape produced a new remix of their song "Einstein A-Go-Go" and called it their "Einstein on the Floor Mix". It was released on Bandcamp digitally, and was to be included in the forthcoming "Landscape A-Go-Go" deluxe CD box set containing all of their albums and a bunch of bonus material. I decided that I should revisit my original cover of this tune and give it a similar remix treatment. The story behind the song, from Blaine Reininger:

"When John Foxx came to the studio in 1981 while we were recording this song he said 'Brilliant track!', to which I replied 'No wonder you like it. It sounds like you.'

"This song was inspired by a dream I had. We were due to be interviewed by a guy from MIT the next day. I dreamt that night that the guy from MIT was so technologically advanced, he was probably from the future. He had all kinds of gadgets. He was wearing a powder blue leisure suit. The next day, the interviewer turned out to be a garden variety radio geek."

Here is my 2025 re-recording of Spot The Dog's instrumental track, "Great Pressure". As originally recorded in Randy Sparks' trailer studio, it appeared as the b-side to the band's 1985 single, "It's Christmas Time" (which I have also recently re-recorded; see my Bandcamp). I wrote this song as an exercise in using some of the first software MIDI sequencers available for personal computers, and I never had any intention of releasing it. But the rest of my band heard it and insisted that it be put to tape. The band's keyboardist/guitarist John Reed dubbed in a bunch of cool guitar tracks and turned it into a rocker. At some point, we needed to select a flip side for our Christmas single, and it was decided that it needed to be this freaky little diddy. Go figure. Learned a bunch of new recording and automation processes in making this fresh version. Instruments used: Moog Minimoog, Oberheim OB-Xa, FXpansion Strobe 2, various PreSonus sound modules, samples and amp sims.

"Long Jump Down" was originally written and recorded by Patrick O'Shaughnessy, who was a bandmate of mine in Spot The Dog during the mid-80s. Spot had long broken up, and Pat was doing a lot of music on his own. This is a song that I have always very much appreciated for its dark and brooding feel, as well as its very relatable first-person lamentations of the DJ who finds himself totally smitten by a female member of the club staff who, despite giving him her number, never answers his calls. This is the finished music mix. The vocals will come later.

This is a new remastering of "SF Underground", a 4-track 7-inch 33-1/3 RPM record which was the first release ever from San Francisco's Subterranean Records in 1979 (Catalog Number SUB 1). A record release party was held at Mabuhay Gardens on November 7 that year, and for $3 you got to see the four bands with tracks on the record perform live, and a copy of the record for free. Includes tracks from punk acts No Alternative, Flipper, Tools and VKTMS.

The synthpunk persona of Kit Watson. What we have here is a mish-mash of old and new; fresh attempts and stale goodies; mostly original, with a smattering of covers. Much of this has not been mastered properly, and most of it was executed in "toy software". Now that I have the right gear for the job, a self-titled album is in the works. Don't hold your breath, though. I'm the Tom Scholz of synthpunk. It's not ever perfect until it's perfect. I have also decided not to post here any versions of any of the songs going onto the album. When the album releases, that's when all the songs will be available.
