Mountain Homecoming

Composed the background score for Zoya Parvin's short film 'Clean' (2021) (Hindi, English), available to viewers in India on the Amazon shopping app under the Mini TV section.

A heartfelt tale of two sisters who meet after several years over what seems like an innocuous family lunch which takes a turn for the worse, 'Clean' stars Amrita Puri and Aisha Ahmed. 

Working on this theme with a director like Zoya, who is very particular about what she wants, over Zoom and Whatsapp calls was quite a challenging affair. There were several iterations before this piece was locked. In the end, it was a great choice as it fit the mood of the film perfectly and ended it, quite literally, on a great note.

'16 mm Selfie' is a short, experimental film by Karan Talwar made from 16 mm film footage found at Mumbai's Chor Bazaar (Thieves' Market). It has been and continues to be screened at film festivals and art exhibitions around the world. All The World's A Selfie (feat. Sofia Ashraf)

There are protests raging in India against the deeply discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the forthcoming National Register of Citizens (NRC). This track uses samples from the Shaheen Bagh protest in New Delhi. Prominent in these samples is a chant, 'Halla Bol', which translates to 'raise your voice'.

Halla Bol

This is an iteration of a piece I'd composed a few years ago for my friend Tejas Sonawane's wonderful short film 'Gunta' (you can watch it here: https://shorted.in/short-films/gunta-tejas-sonawane/). It was supposed to play over the end titles, but eventually he (rightly) decided against using it.

Recently, I collaborated with Roy Dipankar on his segment of the upcoming Lockdown Shorts, an anthology of short films shot in various parts of the world by people living in isolation, in which a version of this piece has been used.

Yeah, it's raw and not fully mixed or whatever, but it's done its time on my hard drive and deserved some fresh air. I shot and edited a video to go with it -- literally a montage made from clips I found on my phone of Fujisawa and Enoshima in Kanagawa, taken at various points over the last two months. I didn't think too much about trying to say something - I just did what the music was telling me.
