Surfatial speaks with Nachiket Joshi. Nachiket explores our questions with a dive into literature and with a gentle humor. He talks of confronting end times, generational change and the downside of time and space for analysis as opposed to instinctual knowledge when considering the crowd's wisdom. He looks at perspectives on believability from a few different standpoints—from within the context of literature and writing (calling upon D. H. Lawrence's work to talk about the creation of persuasive narratives), believability versus authenticity, and an examination of the affliction of fake news in our times. He delves into Céline and R. K. Narayan to illustrate role-playing enabling expertise, and draws from Arun Kolatkar's expansive approach to absorbing diverse perspectives guided purely by curiosity and interest. He talks about the significance of acknowledging process while being an expert, as well as being curious, humble and empathetic to be an effective expert. Nachiket narrates a piece of his own writing to address the question of describing himself, and concludes with wishes of dialogue, thoughtfulness and surprising ourselves as we seek to engage with the world and with each other.

#Nachiket Joshi is a recent graduate from the University of Amsterdam’s Cultural Analysis program, where he wrote his Master’s thesis on the themes of textual reimaginings of form and the ethos of translation that pervades the poetry of the Indian modernists. He is currently working on a research project on the practice of modernist literature and art in the Indian sub-continent, with a regional focus on Bombay and North India. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from St. Xavier’s college, Bombay and went on to do a diploma in Arts and Aesthetics from the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore. He occasionally contributes pieces to online literary journals, and edits the Fiction and Poetry section of the Amsterdam Journal of Critical Theory, Cultural Analysis, and Creative Writing.
