2017’s equal parts somnambulant and sultry Sleeprydr 7” was aptly described as “psychedelic rock that hits like a dream despite undoubtedly seeking to soundtrack nightmares” (-Stereogum). Thankfully, Slow Sundown, Holy Motors’ debut full length release, finds the Estonian dreamcatchers utilizing a similar sonic palette ranging from dark psychedelic pop to shoegaze-inflected western music. But while Sleeprydr, much like 2015’s Heavenly Creatures 7”, provided only a fleeting glimpse into the dreamscape that their music evokes, Slow Sundown’s eight tracks offer a more immersive experience for those brave enough to take the ride. While the guitar lines from lonely cowboy ballads like “Honeymooning” could easily serve as the central themes for unwritten Morriccone scores, dystopian anthems like the rhythmically propelled “Signs” break new ground for the band and demonstrate that Holy Motors are not bound by their influences. Thematically the album is comprised primarily of sad love songs centered around the idea of motion – the motion of a satellite orbiting a planet, the motion of a passenger riding shotgun in a car – as it relates to stellar-scale and existential isolation. Produced by Merchandise’s Carson Cox and recorded at Brooklyn’s Kutch1 Studios when the band was visiting the US on tourist visas, Slow Sundown is a beautiful alien artifact that definitively delivers on everything we have been promised by Holy Motors’ work to date.

About Holy Motors

Hailing from Estonia, Holy Motors is a five-piece twang and reverb band featuring three guitarists. They are cowboys at heart who come off as shoegazers by their presence and dreamcatchers in their music. In their time, Holy Motors have played alongside bands such as Kaleidoscope, Craft Spells, Sic Alps, Dirty Fences, and Rips. They will appear at South by Southwest in 2018 and are currently organizing a series of US tour dates centered around the festival.

'Fast and Furious' is a bit different when compared to my previous releases - this one is an out and out soppy love song! It didn't necessarily directly correlate with my life at the time but after all of the serious and ‘in your face’ songs I have written last year, it just seemed like a natural development. There’s only so much social commentary and angst you can take before you need a break! 
I explored more metaphoric lyric concepts but ultimately, when you listen to the track you can see it's pretty basic! The lyrics to the chorus of 'Fast and Furious' came to me when I was sitting in a hammock on a couple of rare days of hols in France, and there was a motorbike parked in front of me with 'Fast and Furious' written on it, so naturally I wrote a song about it that had a nothing to do with the bike! I wrote this song in two parts, one of which was with an amazing London based artist called Russell Swallow. He was the main contributor to the final section of the song, the bit where it slows down and it is written to show the other side of the story. The classic and painfully imbalanced situation where one person is trying to push the relationship harder and faster, and the other person is just wanting to take it as it is, at a slower pace. But ultimately, the song is a bit of fun, soppy, and I simply love playing it live!

Fast And Furious

This song is about an experience I had while traveling in Florence, Italy when I was 17. It was late at night and I had wondered into a plaza where a bunch of teens from Florence were sitting on steps smoking cigarettes and drinking cheap vodka. I joined them and after 2 or 3 drinks I noticed we were sitting on the steps of the Duomo, one of the most famous Cathedrals in the world. Here were all these teens sitting in front of one of the most iconic places in the world without mentioning it once. It was as if they were sitting outside of a McDonalds. It made me realize just how blind we are when you're young. We feel like we're immortal, we feel like we're all that matters, we are carefree, we lose perspective on what is around us and how we can lose everything at any moment. That night we stayed out until like 6am. I woke up the next morning, tired and hungover, and wrote a small poem about the experience that would later be used for the lyrics in this song. Almost everyone I was with on the steps that night had been wearing Chuck Taylors.
