Tokyo techno maven Risa Taniguchi unveils “When I See You” EP on the formidable Second State. No stranger to the Berlin label, Taniguchi released her “How We Dance Again” EP just last year, in addition to a number of contributions to the label’s compilation series. 

Launching the EP is the title track “When I See You”. A dominating kick drum is accompanied by bouncing percussion and a euphony of shakers, while the looping vocal builds on the track’s intensity. Hurried claps, and distorted synths are introduced, while a punching bass line powers the track on, herding all the elements into a crescendo before a final kick concludes with authority. Warped synth keys, claps, flurried hi-hats and a muffled kick welcome you into “Mute Everything”. Chopping, skittish percussions cut and jolt across the heaving bass, simulating a frantic energy. A rolling 303 line dances with brightly shining synth notes. Towards the close, the synths are stripped away and the percussion takes over once again, with only the subdued acid and bass line at play. 

“Reunited G” is a lighter expedition than the other cuts on the EP, but retains ample energy and force to keep you moving. An angelic vocal sample is sliced up and scattered between elements adding lightness to the track, and plays the main melodic role throughout. An abundance of tambourines glisten over the powerful drums while minor bass notes sound off. “Isolated Island” rounds off the record. The faint crackle of vinyl sounds, while a distant synth line plays and Risa's vocal swirls and fades. A galloping kick drum is introduced and commands attention, with yearning synth notes drifting in and out. Hi hats and snares compliment the kick while an authoritative synth saws its way into the track, dominating the melody.

The next Krachtvoer EP comes from Greece by way of Unified Method. His ‘Kenopsia EP’ is very experimental which gives it a lot of depth while still being club friendly with 2+2=5, ANDROM and Kracht remixes.

The EP starts off with ‘A is for Absence’, combining a hard synth lead with atmospheric sounds and a half timed bass drum. Keeping things interesting from the first to last second. 2+2=5 lending his gritty industrial sound to the remix, perfect for opening your next club show with.

Unified Method’s second original track on the EP, ‘Endless Nights of Wonder’, takes thing into the broken beat side of things. Still remaining atmospheric but working up to a trance synth lead in the second half. On remix duties for this track is ANDROM, delivering a banging four by four remix that shakes the foundations.

The last track on the EP is Chemica, a mesmerizing four by four track. Kracht’s remix takes the original to a darker place, lacing it with stabs befitting any dancefloor post-corona.

Unified Method - Endless Nights Of Wonder (Original Mix)

It’s hard to overstate the importance of ‘The Final Frontier’ in shaping modern electronic music. First released in 1992 by the unapologetically political Detroit collective, Underground Resistance, it remains an essential classic in the story of Techno. Underground Resistance’s stated objective was to “[electrify] the inner city with hi-tech, sci-fi thoughts and dreams”; to offer working-class Black Americans, through music, a vision of a bright future through community action. Final Frontier was the first of many tracks which underlined this mission in bold type.

The great Afrofuturist tradition of imagining Black emancipation through space travel is upfront; both in the Star Trek-referencing title, as well as in the music itself, which sounds like the perfect re-scoring to the “Stargate” scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, nearly 30 years after it was first unleashed, there is not a serious techno fan who does not consider this to belong on the highest echelon of electronic music’s Pantheon.

Donato Basile AKA DJ Plant Texture always wants his music to tell a story, and with his debut EP on Tresor Records, entitled Life, he’s now trying to tell the biggest story there is.

According to the artist, “Life is about the fear of growing up”; both the anxiety itself and acknowledging and moving past it.

This narrative seems to have struck a chord with those who have heard the track, “People want to reflect themselves in the music; something personal. Lots of people have been in touch after hearing it; I guess they feel something melancholic in it. Personally, I imagine the track is like the life of a person; going from being born through childhood and youth and onwards, so perhaps they hear this?”

Having used an MPC since the early 2000s, Basile feels an intuitive connection to the hardware he uses, and so the creative process is very spontaneous: “I know where everything is so the music is made immediately.  I make everything in the first ten minutes; after that if it’s not right then I just abandon it and start something else.”

This immediacy, and familiarity with his equipment is apparent on the A-side, where Basile’s previous life as a drummer comes to the fore and tracks like Cycles and Ripetivo display his native understanding of groove but also how to stir things up - the three A-side tracks find classic techno rhythms seemingly falling apart only to snap back into place even stronger.

The B-side finds Donato exploring more of his melodic side with WTT and the aforementioned title track showing Plant Texture’s love of breakbeat and classic techno.

The three digital bonus tracks continue this exploration of melody and syncopated beats - The EXP Days echos the wistful feeling of Life, as Basile meditates on the times spent at EXP, his record shop in Bari, which functioned as a meeting place for electronic producers in the area. 

Together the eight tracks show a breadth of knowledge and ability of an artist that has grown older and more experienced over time, and is ready to share his evolution.
