“Radjah Ride” è il passaporto di Silvio Vinci verso un groove senza confini: una suite psichedelica dal sapore raga che suona antica e futuristica allo stesso tempo. Scritto e arrangiato da Vinci, il brano si regge su un motore compatto e ipnotico—basso e Rhodes incastrati in un impulso circolare—mentre il sitar disegna linee luminose e scintillanti che richiamano subito l’aura indo-psych della Londra di fine anni ’60.
Ciò che colpisce è il modo in cui il pezzo tratta la tradizione con rispetto, ma senza soggezione. Invece di appoggiarsi ai cliché, Vinci usa gli elementi indiani come parti vive dell’arrangiamento: pattern di tabla e percussioni (presi dalle librerie di Logic Pro) vengono posizionati con un orecchio da producer, creando uno swing quasi rituale che scorre con la sicurezza di un loop acid jazz. Ne nasce un trance costante—un po’ incenso, un po’ club—su cui galleggiano frasi modali, mentre il groove strizza l’occhio al punch del mod rock e all’eleganza asciutta della psichedelia pop britannica.
Il vero gancio del brano è il suo equilibrio: gli accordi caldi del Rhodes mantengono l’armonia ricca e umana, il basso resta ostinato ma melodico, e il sitar aggiunge quella “elettricità spirituale” inconfondibile senza mai invadere il mix. “Radjah Ride” non si limita a fondere generi: cuce le epoche, trasformando la tradizione indiana e la psichedelia inglese in un mantra moderno che fa muovere la testa.

“Radjah Ride” is Silvio Vinci’s passport to a borderless groove: a raga-flavored psychedelic suite that feels ancient and futuristic at the same time. Written and arranged by Vinci, the track is built from a tight, hypnotic engine—bass and Rhodes locking into a circular pulse—while the sitar threads bright, shimmering lines that instantly evoke the classic Indo-psych aura of late-’60s London.
What makes the piece stand out is the way it treats tradition with respect but not reverence. Instead of leaning on clichés, Vinci uses the Indian elements as living components of the arrangement: tabla and percussion patterns (sourced from Logic Pro’s libraries) are placed with a producer’s ear, creating a ritual-like swing that moves as confidently as an acid-jazz loop. The result is a steady trance—part incense, part nightclub—where modal phrases float over a groove that nods to mod rock’s punch and the crisp elegance of British psychedelic pop.
The track’s real hook is its balance: warm Rhodes voicings keep the harmony lush and human, the bass stays insistently melodic, and the sitar adds that unmistakable “spiritual electricity” without ever overwhelming the mix. “Radjah Ride” doesn’t just blend genres—it stitches eras together, turning Indian tradition and English psych into a modern, head-nodding mantra.

Three is the magic number for The Cactus Channel. The ever-evolving Melbourne collective’s third album represents a new consciousness and a decisive turning point. Unloosed from their earlier incarnation as an instrumental soul and funk band into something wilder, a little darker and heavier, the new album sees The Cactus Channel diving in deep to dreamlike soundtracks, electrifying wig-outs and woozy meditations.

There were signifiers along the road; a boundary-splintering EP with  Ball Park Music  singer Sam Cromack last year, following a 7” single collab with Nick Murphy, released as  The Cactus Channel feat. Chet Faker . These outings were a glimpse of the alchemy of adding vocals to the band’s typically intuitive, instrumental arrangements. And now with the band’s own Lewis Coleman stepping up to the mic, a vocal dimension has become part of The Cactus Channel’s fully formed, signature sound.

This new embodiment of The Cactus Channel is of the cultural moment, akin to the vibrational path-crossing of fellow travellers such as Badbadnotgood, Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Menahan Street Band. The band flexes their classic soul and funk influences whilst expanding their own songwriting along psychedelic paths, adding weight and substance to their melodic and rhythmic axis.

Looking back to when The Cactus Channel formed in high school, united by shared interests and a shared sense of humour, they were always set to walk this new path. A love of soul music and the kind of hip hop, jazz, and alternative releases that spring from it, meant that from the beginning The Cactus Channel have prided themselves not just on eclecticism, but on the constant sharing of influences among their members; exploring new influences and sonic territories.

Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop. 


Hailing from just outside of Melbourne, Australia, their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings amassed a die-hard fanbase and brought their sound from their home studio to every corner of the globe. The band is now signed to Big Crown Records, joining a lineage of contemporary and classic sounds that have influenced Surprise Chef’s music since their formation in 2017.


Surprise Chef’s self proclaimed “moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk” encompass punchy drums, infectious keys, rhythm guitar you might hear on a Studio One record, and flute lines that could be from a Blue Note session; but when you step back and take in the entirety of their sound and approach, you’ll hear and see a group greater than the sum of its parts.
