Otoria is Vincent Seguin, a French producer who took his first steps in music as a member of a Paris-based DJ collective playing in some of the most iconic clubs of the capital, such as Showcase and Chez Papillon. He left the turntables behind when he moved to the USA for studies before settling in New York, where he immersed himself in the city’s underground dance music scene. Those musical encounters nurtured in him a greater appreciation for the cyclical and industrial patterns of techno but at the heart of his songwriting lies a strong, deep-rooted affection for expressive melodies and harmonies. With a musical identity significantly shaped by the two major music cities of Paris and New York, Otoria’s sound is distinctly cosmopolitan and a fresh addition to the world of electronic music.

Otoria’s SRNDR debut, “Reminiscence”, typifies his signature sound. Treading the line between progressive house and melodic techno, the strength of the track lies in its ability to be both energetic yet beautifully contemplative. Featuring arpeggiator bassline and synths that drive it forward without being overly confrontational, and restrained melodic leads that, by their accordion-esque quality give the track a distinctly French flavour, “Reminiscence” is bound to evoke melancholia and deep emotions.

"In this day and age when high gloss and gimmicks take the place of style and inventiveness, it is a pleasure to hear an artist like Whipd Beats. On this album the listener is treated to a tasteful mixing of a variety of genres fused together. There is a wonderful and exciting sound of spontaneity that distinguishes each track with a uniqueness and an individuality all of its own. Where there is a requirement for artists to become a narrow specialist, Whipd Beats has retained a freedom that defies categorization. Listeners will immediately appraise the great variety of styles and interpretation with which Whipd Beats interprets her tracks.

You can expect the unexpected on this album! It is filled with paradoxes just like the creator. On side “A “ is a collection of ambient jazz, soulful gospel blues, chill out downtempo electronica, a soulful vocal ballad, and a fusion of hip hop with tango. Like a painter who uses colour knowingly Whipd Beats is a weaver of moods that are softly textured, with richness, warmth, depth, and soul.

On side “B” Whipd Beats creates a voluptuous sound for dance floors that is full of rhythmic freedom and melodic spontaneity. She ventures down uncovered pathways, fusing different genres together, and trying a variety of approaches to get to the essence of the music and tell her story. This is a collection of afro disco house, tribal tech, progressive jazzy house, and progressive tech house. There is an open-mindedness and an unorthodox acoustic approach allowing Whipd Beats to escape the usual conventionalities and create music that is electric and fresh.

Between these two very different tempos lies the personality of the artist, a sensitivity that listeners want, a careful choice of instruments, and a flawless interpretation that will linger hauntingly in the listeners memory for a long time to come. Both are valid, both are potent. The variety of sounds could have become an obstacle to this album but instead the bold versatility sets it apart from the rest. The alternation between tenderness and punch, exuberance and restraint, experimental and serene. In the end it is the musician who determines the path of their music bringing their own individual stamp to their legacy.

'Shapes' is a retrospective collection of songs released between 2019 and 2023, remastered for vinyl. Side A comprises two summer-centric, deep house beauties, 'Summer Daze' and 'Sundown', while Side B is dedicated to the more progressive side of his production repertoire, featuring 'Undertow', 'In Transit' and 'First Light'. As a collection, the release highlights Idris' penchant for jazzy, soulful basslines, warm, ambient soundscapes, and stirring, emotive melodies, as well as an approach to songwriting that embodies the spirit of electronic dance music of the late 1990s and early 2000s. There are no radio edits here, just music that celebrates the art of the long build.
