Working across a variety of media John Lemke explores all things sonic through live performance, sound design and his work as a documentary film composer. The Walizka EP is his latest solo release on Denovali Records.

Three items in a suitcase, a clarinet, a looper and a microphone - is how it all started. 

A free improvisation with friend & collaborator Łukasz Bernacki (on clarinet) sparked John’s desire to bring his compositional and production approach back down to the most basic elements. Creating simple, yet distinctive rhythms only through tapping contact microphones run into noisy guitar amps became the base for the EP’s three tracks, consequently inspiring its live, lo-fi feel. Written and recorded between John’s native Berlin and his adopted home of Glasgow, Walizka (Polish for ‘suitcase’) somehow absorbs the defining atmospheres of both cities in its core.

Previously released digitally as a teaser for John’s debut album, the Walizka EP actually presents newer material, progressing the electro-acoustic nature of ‘People Do’ towards more dub drenched territories. Refining John’s blend of prepared piano and field recordings with hand crafted beats and swampy bass lines, this deeply moody and danceable release bends genres with refreshing ease.

The EP is furthermore enhanced by a second half of remixes by fellow Denovali artists Piano Interrupted, SaffronKeira and Petrels and the ever elusive Everyday Dust. Far from conventional remixes, these pieces fall more in the category of re-imaginations, complementing the EP’s first, more rhythm anchored half with a coherent ambient counterpart.

After releasing a first glimpse in the form of the ‘Atomos VII’ EP earlier this year, A Winged Victory For The Sullen finally reveal their second full-length album entitled ‘Atomos’, which besides familiar piano, string and drone sounds also sees the duo introduce flurries of electronics, harp and modular synthesisers.  

Wayne McGregor, founder of Random Dance Company and resident choreographer at the Royal Ballet, chose to play the album repeatedly during practices with his core group of dancers. After noticing the group's reaction with the music, he contacted Adam and Dustin to see if they could write the score for his new oeuvre. The duo were given complete artistic freedom and they treated the score with the same care and attention as their debut album. They recorded more than sixty minutes of music over a four-month period during the summer of 2013 across studios in Brussels, Berlin and Reykjavik, with the help of their long time collaborative sound engineer Francesco Donadello. During the recording process they realised, that this would become their official second studio album. McGregor provided them with the inspiration to expand their sound palette into more electronic territory, whilst keeping their signature chamber sound, resulting in a very unique record.

SURROGATE SIBLING is the crossover studio project of composer/multi-instrumentalist Dieter Dolezel, located right at the intersection of modern electronica and contemporary chamber music.

The music is deliberately never strictly one or the other, oscillating freely between intricately crafted string and piano arrangements and contemporary electronic beats and soundscapes in varying degrees, incorporating a wide range of influences spanning from Reichian minimalism to Autechre’s abstract electronica.

From early on, a rather unique feature of the project was the notion of featuring various collaborating musicians with vastly different musical backgrounds, that would also possibly change with each new album.

The self-titled debut was released to critical acclaim on autentico music in late 2014, with a short tour accompanying its release. The notable first lineup featured Carlos Cipa on piano and New York based Sirius Quartet on strings as collaborators, with each track featuring a different combination of musicians never to repeat itself on the entire album.

Since its release, the album slowly but steadily garnered recognition, ultimately resulting in listings on several high-profile playlists on Spotify et al. and a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell. Recently, CIV, the first ever written composition for Surrogate Sibling, got featured as opening track on renowned Café del Mar’s latest piano compilation album.

2018 saw the release of Surrogate Sibling’s sophomore studio album Hive on acclaimed Swedish label 1631 Recordings. Despite being staged in a much more intimate setting, it is significantly broader in scope by rebalancing the relationship of its ingredients more towards the electronic side and the addition of maverick vocalist Chaem to the current lineup, enhancing the so far purely instrumental sonic palette with her hugely distinctive voice.

2020 will see another change of gear with the release of a new EP titled Proto. It will feature a 3 part cycle solely consisting of electric guitar and subtle electronics.
