The opening lyric to River Allen's full debut EP as Ghost Piss finds the multi-hyphenate artist in a different place, both literally and figuratively, than when we last listened to her step out for the defiant March 2020 single, "Beats in Bed". Expanding her DIY sound to expound upon new scenes, new feels and a new world that continues to shift into unpredictable shapes in 2021, the Blushing EP is an encapsulating statement from the Ghost Piss project that feels comforting, urgent and sardonically necessary in equal measure. From NYC to Richmond to the deep forests of Oregon, River has taken her musical alias to another level in a year unlike any other.

Featuring two new original tracks written, produced and sung by Allen in addition to a suite of electrifying remixes from Jubilee, Kareem Ali and Bergsonist, the Blushing vibe is playful yet biting with a beautiful propensity to wear its heart on its sleeve. From resigned yet empowering acceptance on "Worry" to tongue-in-cheek club observations on "Hardcore" from her time spent performing and tending bar at NYC dance venues (as well as tending the garden at The Lot Radio), Ghost Piss brings her fragility to the fore while maintaining an incisive wit for an easy "fuck you" when pushed too far (as seen on the single, "Beats in Bed").

Jubilee cranks up the intensity on a flip of "Beats in Bed" that follows her recent Miami bass and electro experiments with a muscular, synth-heavy banger primed for peak-time dance floors, while Phoenix's preeminent cosmic explorer Kareem Ali sends "Worry" to the stars for an emotional, uptempo remix that's tailor-made for the dreamers out there. Styles vet and prolific rhythm scientist Bergsonist rounds out the reworks with a percussive breakdown of "Beats in Bed" that siphons the energy of the original into a meditative, grooving trip into the early morning.

Blushing will be released as a closing ceremony to a long, hot summer on September 23, 2021 in digital and physical forms on Styles Upon Styles.

Certain Creatures - Passages

Brooklyn's Quincy Vidal boasts two unique personalities behind the mic: Le'Asha Julius and Caleb "CE" Eberhardt. The duo met in the acting department at Purchase College before descending on Brooklyn with the intention of composing day-in-the-life odysseys through a fiercely modern take on Golden Age hip hop.

Performing constantly throughout the five boroughs while dropping 3 albums of jazz-inflected heat since 2010, QV set forth in 2016 with a different kind of release: a custom-designed hoodie embedded with a download code for their label debut, Chi'ren. The pairing of Chi'ren's playful artwork and intentional lyricism blazes through each song, as Le and CE weave through tales of love, anger, sex, betrayal and ultimately, the loss of childhood innocence.

Chi'ren features productions from both CE and Space People, whose beat tape, SHMM (SUS012), dropped in December 2015. Their work draws from 90’s and 10’s inspiration with crucial abandon - no style is more present than the singular, alive and confident voices of Quincy Vidal. Brooklyn, stand up.

In special collaboration with Santiago Carrasquilla and Quincy Vidal, Styles Upon Styles will release a limited edition hoodie equipped with an early download of the Chi'ren EP on March 4, 2016. Quincy Vidal's Chi'ren will be available on all digital music stores come April Fool's 2016 (maybe Tidal, too?).

We are still consistently blown away by Hansen's work, visual or otherwise, since "Prehodni" - his recent album, "Primitives" [Flau],  is a masterpiece of submerged musique technó, refined sound sculpting and hallucinatory hip movers.

Zach Cooper weaves recordings with the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, high school demos, solo compositions and eraserhead-less tape experiments into the shining fabric of The Sentence. 

A debut album brimming with many talents and tales, The Sentence is atemporal, a divining of Cooper’s personal history to map his musical travels through formative years in New York state, his studies and collaborations within the University of Vermont’s music theory and composition department, and a move to the hills of Black Mountain, North Carolina. Cooper lays bare his recorded youth throughout The Sentence: 

“Exploring old recordings and turning them into new ones allows me to find the common musical threads through my life. These sounds give me little hints to understanding my REAL life, in spirit and in vibration, more than any specific mood or musical taste.” 

His personal plunders are the sonic foundation of The Sentence, but only partly make the album’s guiding beam. Devoted to a lifestyle of meditation and spiritual embrace, Cooper reflects inner peace to a universal call for calm. “This is for us to incite stillness in our hearts and minds,” each word a song, each title a movement in the greater dance of harmony and balance. Cooper’s sentence is not about meditation, but the result of it.

Zach Cooper’s The Sentence is an elegant testament to a life of sound, a history of collaboration and solo experimentation, a shedding of metaphysical skin. Styles Upon Styles will release The Sentence on limited vinyl housed in gold-stamped and embossed jackets alongside high-quality digital iterations and divinations on March 18, 2016, pending the good grace of the vinyl press gods.

A favorite Crown Heights selector and one-third of Archie Pelago, Zach "Kroba" Koeber shares a trail of styles, cuts and favorites on his new mixtape, Orgone Blister. Kroba's thicket of tunes binds contemporary classical, microsound, symmetrical metal and swing standards into an aural manifestation of a sunset hike through the Putnam County backwoods (keep the river on your right and avoid those cave dwelling time travelers). 

A confidant of the SUS crew and one of the most passionate, encyclopedic diggers we know, it's an honor to have him inaugurate our little tape series for fans, friends, fellow diggers, spinners and listeners. 

There are 30 copies of the 90-minute mixtape available. A small portion of the mix will be available when you scoop the tape, but the full experience is bound to its ferrous component.

Gotham-based beat scientist Space People returns to Styles Upon Styles with Wet, the long-awaited follow-up to last year’s debut, SHMM.

From the neck-snapping wobble of "East" to the clap-that-ass insistence of "Work," Wet finds Space People combining a post-Timbaland, found sound futurism with a powerful helping of gridless, hard-swinging cosmic slop. But here, a hard ear for the weird doesn't mean a lean towards the tedious, as is often the case: the 6-track set clocks in at just shy of 16 minutes, a refreshing bid for concise length and split-second motivic development in an age in which the ocean's motion is often all but an afterthought. Wet succeeds as a work both succinct and expressive, tending as much towards the psychic as the overtly sexual, and uniting the two in a humid orgy of avant-garde boom-bap and boogie bass. 

A capable multi-instrumentalist and native New Yorker, Space People builds frenetic, funk-laden tracks using digital and analog synthesizers, drum machines, and an expansive sample library. His work showcases a sound that is just as likely to recall Charles Stepney's cinematic arranging or Giorgio Moroder's harmonic palette, as it is J Dilla's poltergeist trying to skype you through your home appliances.

His career as a collaborator has been unusually fruitful. He's maintained a decade-long partnership with songwriter Gabriel Garzón-Montano with several releases to date, most recently the official remix of Mayer Hawthorne's "Lingerie & Candlewax." He has garnered critical acclaim for his production work on Chi'ren, the 2016 EP from fellow Styles artists Quincy Vidal, and remains an indispensable part of their live performances. Most recently, he served as music director for the debut live performance of Latasha Alcindor’s B(LA)K at National Sawdust.

The visual components to Wet - both the album design and the title track's accompanying video - were carefully crafted by longtime Styles collaborator, multimedia artist Santiago Carrasquilla.

Denitia – Bound To Happen (Jubilee Remix)

Diamond Terrifier Cipher is the brainchild of Sam Hillmer, a NYC impresario responsible for countless mind-bending evenings, leading the Zs charge, and bridging saxophone and electronics solo incarnations under the moniker Diamond Terrifier. Hillmer’s new bandit crew, the Cipher, assembles four global- and generational-spanning tricksters: the scene’s best kept secret, Michael Beharie, on guitar, synths and effects; Cibo Matto co-founder, Miho Hatori, on vocals; and studio wizard / guitar deviant, Don Devore, of Collapsing Scenery.

The Cipher spent the past two years improvising, jamming, and melting throughout New York’s venues before settling into Don’s studio to record four conjurings for their self-titled debut, Chapel Master. The titular track haunts by a thin buzz of Sam’s horn before collapsing in aggressive elegance, setting the tone for the EP and the hypnotic orchestra of synths, sounds and seances to come.

Cipher maestro Hillmer fingerprints the EP with echoes of free-jazz and drone, conducting space for Miho’s alien vocals, Beharie’s textures and Don’s riffs to birth a distinct, warped, New York now-wave recording resistant to any singular form. Chapel Master rules a place of impermanence made quantifiable for the first time care of Styles Upon Styles.

Styles Upon Styles will present Chapel Master in digital and vinyl formats on October 13th and November 2017, respectively.

A3 King Garbage - Green & Blue

With an arsenal of acoustic and electric instruments--ranging from harmonium, guitars, jaw harps, synths, and more--Sqwks meets the solitary Saxophonist, Kroba, on the sonic shores. The ensuing swells of The Incense Eaters create a meditative exploration through drone and melody. The four compositions seem to expand and contract into different shapes with every listen, new details and familiar feelings coming to the fore with each subsequent immersion.

With added care and technical magic from Oliver Chapoy, The Incense Eaters moves and breathes alongside a special physical package of scents, a cassette and writings from the artists themselves that have been printed locally (and lovingly) at Shoestring Press in Brooklyn. The Incense Eaters is released on February 29, celebrating the music's shape-shifting vibe of mutability and impermanence just in time for 2020's passing of the Leap Year.

Kroba & Sqwks - Baikwa [SUS034]

Mat Weitman debuts as Hotels on Mars to lament wasted time, lost relationships, and a country tearing itself apart. Raw from a breakup and the sudden death of a friend while isolated during Brooklyn’s spring 2020 lockdown, Weitman processed anxiety through a rapid-fire recording session that became Grief Museum.

Grief Museum captures the world’s disintegration with a sardonic, yet earnest, narrator who reports a personal and mutual descent into depression. Weitman reckons with himself in self-deprecating style, singing anti-anthems doused in mockery and alight with insight, exemplified on the album's opener, “The Worst Year on Record.” 

A not-so-fond, but endlessly replayable farewell to 2020, “The Worst Year on Record” is both a reckoning with and an outright mockery of the artist's growing depression while recording music at home under NYC's March-April lockdown. This is the anti-anthem to 2020 that sets the stage for the album's tour of jokes, insights and emotions.

Hotels on Mars - The Worst Year on Record [SUS036]

"13 Mimosas" is the second single from Hotels on Mars' debut LP, Grief Museum, acting as a slow-churning, contemplative bridge between the record's freewheeling first half and darker, more introspective conclusion. The instrumental features a cyclical progression of dubbed out folk, grunge and garage rock textures that hang in the air like one too many cigarettes, showcasing the artist's expressive guitar playing as the album's narrative spirals deeper and deeper.
