excellent. build and release are perfect. the ending bit is surprisingly melancholic.  there's also the "plateau" section that would have pleased Masters & Johnson...lovely listen.

The Assignment: What does a moment (or a day) in the life of a jellyfish sound like to a jellyfish?

I hate to be lazy and use something I was working on instead of something new sparked by the actual challenge, but sometimes time is our tyrant and I was fascinated by this forgotten masters, some live-in-the-studio improvisations with awesome French drummer André Charlier that I discovered some days ago.
Captured while we were warming up for a recording session years ago. This was on tape but never used nor listened to, and I've been taking some nice bits out of it for further use. These are all ad-lib, abstract and weird soundscapes, no groovy bass 'n drums at all.
This is an abstract, floating groove-less & creepy track.

And I think it fits the challenge perfectly cause, o be honest:

- Invertebrate folks listen to beat-less music, I'm pretty sure. 
- Jelly fish are creepy little  beings.

JellyBuchla [Disquiet0455]

Inner Invertebrate [disquiet0455]

Jellyfish have three essential life functions. They eat, have sex, then they die. The rest of the time, they simply float about the water trying to avoid being attacked by predators. It’s not a bad way to live.

The jellyfish mating ritual is typically the outcome of chance encounters experienced while drifting about the ocean currents. Think of it like aquatic low-speed dating in today’s pandemic climate, with potential partners randomly hooking up while trying to stay away from each other.

Suss Müsik considered the art of avoidance in developing this short piece. Two synth engines were modulated to allow their waveforms to “drift” unpredictably, with a small dollop of spring-reverse reverb to create a “bounceback” effect. An alternating pattern for fake dulcimer provides the melodic “current” that brings these two mates together. 

Jellyfish die not long after mating, and such is the case with this piece. A few brief piano notes symbolize the fertilization process and portend the coming demise. What once was clear becomes opaque and drops to the ocean floor.

The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Process: First I was amazed that the first Disquiet Junto project should be already 9 years ago! :O feels like, maybe 3 years.

I still got the recordings of the very first ice cube in a glass project in a folder, however I decided to record new samples, employing stereo microphones and a contact microphone. For the glass I used a large pharmacy flask. This leads to different source recordings but also I decided to use the ice-glass recordings only, created an interesting rhythmic loop and decorated it with stretched and otherwise manipulated sample snippets from the recordings. enjoy & happy new year!

Fuzzy Chime , Viola And Flute (disquiet0474) With MDH & The Land

Long time, no time. This piece is a response to the weekly Disquiet Junto Challenge. This time, the assignment was:

Record a piece of music in which some substantial portion is performed without looking.

Inspired by a recent musical tool (the XLNAudio XO), using my mouse and a map of drum samples, I randomly traveled different samples by moving my mouse over the map with my eyes closed. The sampled output of that "journey" ends when the mouse exited the map and no sounds were left. Using the first and only recording of that exploration, i added some spectral noise and a few strings and chords trying to convey the strange emotion that I encountered, listening to the samples.

Post-classical ambient minimalism for crepuscular airports.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
