Greetings and happy Monday to all of you. Today I’m excited to share my first collaboration with our very charming friend, Janine Levinson (https://soundcloud.com/janinelevinson). For those who have not yet discovered her SC page, be prepared for a wonderful world of evocative and poetic lyrical storytelling. Her words are thoughtful and insightful; and her ideas often inescapably honest. Plus, she has a great comedic edge that I find refreshing. You’re really going to love her stuff. :)

Janine and I also met in Eddie Shook’s ‘Anything Goes’ chat room (it’s quite the fun group, and you’ll find me there every other Thursday, enjoying a great variety of music from SC artists and professionals alike). There is something about this group of musicians that is phenomenally friendly, and helpful, and supportive… and we just naturally gravitate to working together. Janine and I finally had the opportunity to add our first collaborative musical creation to that growing pool of songs inspired by ‘Anything Goes’ (here’s the playlist link: https://soundcloud.com/justin_mackay/sets/the-songs-for-which-eddie-is); and it’s a wildly ethereal joyride of a song. We sincerely hope you enjoy ‘Train To Tomorrow’. We certainly enjoyed making it. :)

You Don't Know Me

Plato had no time nor patience for anyone who enjoyed the comforts of the unconscious. “Asleep, man is useless,” he wrote. “He may as well be dead. It [is] a disgrace and unworthy of a gentleman if he devotes the whole of any night to sleep.”

René Descartes felt differently. In Discourse on Method he wrote, “Asleep we can in the same way imagine ourselves possessed of another body and that we see other stars and another earth.” Descartes may have had a point; he passed away from pneumonia due to traveling in sub-zero predawn temperatures. Legend has it that his philosophy pupil Queen Christina of Sweden was an early riser and demanded lessons at five in the morning.

Suss Müsik occasionally wakes in the wee hours at two or three in the morning, working or reading for a bit, then returning to bed a few hours later. The quality of sleep at that hour is richly luxurious, a deep enveloping wave of inanimate bliss. Upon waking, the first question that comes to mind is “What day is it?”

This piece was created to at first engage with, and then slowly disentangle, the busy rhythms of the mind. It was performed on handmade synth/MIDI devices and recorded live to 8-track. The title is derived from the part of the brain that produces melatonin.
