Bookmakers #12 - L’écrivain du mois : Alain Damasio
Né à Lyon en 1969 sous le nom d’Alain Raymond, ce fils d’un carrossier et d’une professeure d’anglais rêvait, adolescent, « de changer la société ». Mais sa timidité l’empêche de s’engager pleinement dans les cercles militants. Alors pour exprimer sa « rage », ce lecteur compulsif de philosophie (Nietzsche, Foucault, Deleuze) va se brancher avec intensité sur un champ d’expression qu’il ne pratique quasiment jamais dans ses lectures : le roman, pour sa capacité à actionner « du désir, de la joie » et de nouveaux affects pour des luttes fertiles.
Il en écrira seulement trois en vingt ans, disponibles au catalogue d’une maison indépendante, La Volte : « La Zone du Dehors » (1999), « La Horde du Contrevent » (2004) et « Les Furtifs » (2019). Trois ambitieux pavés conceptuels au souffle narratif étourdissant, trois laboratoires du style riches en néologismes, en jeux de mots ou en allitérations, trois « long-sellers » qui, complétés par le recueil de nouvelles « Aucun souvenir assez solide » (2012) et toutes les rééditions en poche chez Gallimard, atteignent aujourd’hui un total d’1,2 million de livres vendus, sans compter les traductions. Alain Damasio a publié ce printemps aux éditions Rageot la refonte d’une nouvelle de 2014, « Scarlett et Novak », narrant l’agression d’un jeune homme privé de son intelligence artificielle.

À 51 ans, Alain Damasio apparaît souvent comme une sorte d’oracle chatoyant. Il est, en France, le seul écrivain de science-fiction à qui tous les médias tendent leurs micros, ravis de se faire expliquer le présent pour déjouer les pièges du futur. Sa bonhommie solaire, volontiers rieuse, contraste avec la fermeté de ses convictions politiques (anticapitaliste et écolo, fervent soutien des ZAD ou des Gilets Jaunes) et la lucidité de ses analyses sur notre dépendance dramatique aux réseaux, la novlangue abêtissante de la start-up nation ou le dernier eye-liner de Big Brother. « J’ai toujours revendiqué la S.-F. comme un genre majeur, qui connaît aujourd’hui un âge d’or » puisque notre « vécu technologique » est désormais « total, quotidien, permanent », en raison de ce petit objet rectangulaire que nous avons en poche du matin au soir, le smartphone, noir miroir d’une humanité sous surveillance.

Mais quelle a été la formation de cet artiste qui, pour écrire, doit sempiternellement s’isoler, seul et longtemps, dans les gorges du Verdon, le Vercors, le Cap-Corse, à Groix, Porquerolles ou Ouessant ? Ce quinqua dans le vent pour qui la randonnée est aussi importante, au sein de son processus créatif, que la prose de Mallarmé ? Ce passionné de football « structuré par l’épreuve » qui affirme apprendre à organiser ses phrases en regardant jouer l’Argentin Lionel Messi ? Pour le savoir, « Bookmakers » s’est rendu au domicile d’Alain Damasio, à Marseille, le temps d’une visite furtive – dont voici la première partie, à l’extrême-amont de sa mémoire.

The latest release on Madloch's Crossfade Sounds welcomes Argentine artist Nico Cassou for his label debut with the Spoken Words EP. Based in Buenos Aires, Nico first appeared in 2013 on sister label 3rd Avenue's We Are the Future (Fall 2013) compilation, before stepping away from production for nearly a decade. Now, after a long hiatus, he returns with his first solo EP, marking a fresh chapter in his career.

Featuring five originals — Momentary, Electric Vortex, Eco N' Deep, Little Dub, and Spoken Words — the collection explores a refined crossover between dub and deep techno, rich in hypnotic grooves and immersive textures. A confident return, Spoken Words EP signals Nico Cassou's re-entry into the scene with a sound that feels both matured and forward-looking.

After presenting Detroit Swindle’s sophomore album High Life in 2018, we felt it was the right time to serve you up a tasty selection of remixes from all over the world and all over the sound palette. We’ve got some dub and boogie from Australia and the Netherlands, classic deephouse from Detroit, dark and dreamy deephouse from the UK and some high energy house from Germany. This set of remixes comes from 5 artists we hold in high regard and have made a serious impact on their part of the scene; some recently and some already a long time ago. 

We invited Dutch techno -plot twist alert!- legend Steve Rachmad to come up with a re-interpretation of ‘Yes, no, maybe (feat. Tom Misch)’. His Sterac Electronics remix actually has nothing to do with techno but is an uplifting modern boogie version of the already funky original. Glimmering electronics, some added harmonics and a tight 80’s groove is what this version is all about. 

The A2 is reserved for Cinthie, who took the high energy afro funk track ‘Call of the wild (feat. Jungle by Night)’ and turned it into a full on house frenzy with solo’s all around and a groove that just keeps on going and going. 

The A side is completed with a remix by Jura Soundsystem, who has impressed many of us with his balaeric influenced synth-boogie, and dub on his own label ‘Isle of Jura’. Here, he chose to remix ‘High life (feat. Lorenz Rhode)’ and has done an excellent job in re-imagining the track into a tamed down, dreamy dub.

On the flip, there’s Matt Karmil’s take on one of the album’s beatless tracks ‘Ketama gold’. He goes in deep with some dusty drums and an arrangement that keeps on building and building, keeping the chord sequence from the track’s outro as a main loop and adding subtle FX, toms and acid hits and a final delivery where electronic cowbells up the energy level by a notch or two. 

We finish off the compilation with a moody deephouse re-interpretation of ‘Ex machina’ by Detroit legend Gari Romalis. The twisted machine funk of the original is craftfully replaced by a dusty house loop, dreamy pads and smart usage of the original’s drum effects to build momentum. 

This remix package brings a lovely new chapter into the story of ‘High Life’ and we hope you’ll enjoy these reworks as much as we do.
