This set was all of my experiences I've ever had at MAGFest crunched into a 30 minute slot. I'd been going to MAG on and off for years, and after hearing countless DJs throughout the hallways and across the stages, I had a good idea of exactly what I wanted to play. I wanted to make sure to keep the energy high and filled with all the warm, uplifting emotions that MAG brings me every year, and play tracks both new and old to bring everyone together. It's a shame I don't have a live recording with the effects and other things I did on the fly; this show was my best live show to date. It was also the first time I've literally heard an entire crowd of hundreds cheer at the top of their lungs (when I brought Fly Away into Bass Slut); that experience still sticks with me today.

You'll notice that I used songs with piano extensively, and I made sure to slip in some chip sounds too. I was a little ambitious with a set ranging from 180-210, but given that I was late on Saturday and the headliners were following after me, I figured that there should be at least one fast and hard set. I slipped in the Corridors of Time mix for the oldheads and to add a pinch of melancholy, after which I could bring everyone back with the Divinity Kyunstep smashup. 

I really hope you enjoy this set, and that you keep on raving with a warm, caring heart.

For the past year or so, Series Ai has been putting on Cyber Sakura; a massive live event in Vancouver featuring Anison DJs, VTubers, and Live Music groups. As part of their hype for this year's event, they decided to host an online preshow that I was invited to play in it! 

While looking through the announced performers for the live event, I saw that they were going to have two stages; one stage for anison/otaku untz and remixes, and another stage for pure anime songs. With that in mind, I tried to find a balance of pure anime, vocaloid, and remixes while keeping the theme of "Cyber Sakura" in mind. This led to a light and uplifting remix-focused first section, followed by a number of increasingly energetic pure anime tracks, transitioning to a Japanese-themed block and ending with a more club-style sound, all the while trying to portray what I thought "Cyber Sakura" as a theme and live event would be like. I may have gone a bit too heavy on the pure anime songs in retrospect, but Series Ai have some very talented pure anime DJs, so I want to make sure to highlight how awesome unremixed tracks can be. 

In terms of mixing, this set wasn't the most complicated, but I tried to focus primarily on short layered transitions or well-timed starts to keep things clean and moving forward. I did enjoy the transition from Radio Happy into Reverse Rainbow (especially with the Love-Loves!) as well as the layering and drop switch from 劣等上等 to Fragment of the Moon. 

As always, it's great to support another group filled with passion and love for Japanese music. I wish Series Ai the best for their live event, and I hope you enjoy!

Live Recording from Shamismash No. 1 - Premiered June 18th, 2023.

At last, the time hath come. Like a phoenix, Shamismash rose from the ashes of Gucabash, complete with fun twists like an ever-change schedule and confusion as to if this event was actually for some kind of fightan geimu. To encourage everyone to just bee themselves, one of the requirements was that every DJ had to use a pseudonym, which meant I was free of the curse of having a name on the internet.  The memes were free at last.

The name "Shamiland" was to show both a cyberpunk kind of vibe combined with shami's more recent favorite songs, as my original intention was to have a combination of incredibly fast denpa/memes followed by some kind of time slip to mix 80s club and pop hits. However, as I got into set crafting,  things developed on their own and it became whatever it is you're hearing. There were a lot of themes thrown around to tell this silly story, and honestly I think it turned out a lot better when I just decided to sing my song instead, although you can certainly hear the core idea splattered throughout. One of the key songs that shaped this set was mercury's Ganbara track, the idea for which was concocted at the leafland rave, becoming the first exclusive and unreleased track I ever premiered. I also had fun using lyrics and plays off of lyrics to help craft the story, so make sure to check those out too! While I loved a whole lot of the transitions, my favorite mashups this time were Concept of Love x What is Love, and Who's Ready for Tomorrow x Itachiii,

You never know what comes your way. I was out dancing at the local rave to catch some last-minute inspiration for crafting my Anibash set, and found myself outside chatting with two fellows who just got a pad in the area, and they were HYPED about their opening house party. There were going to be DJs, drinks, and good times all around, and I was invited to come! However, as it was the Friday of the last weekend before AX, I had planned on using the time to make sure to give my all to the upcoming live, and said that I had to politely decline due to that. At this point the conversation shifted to my DJing, and it turns out one of the DJs had dropped last-minute and they were actually looking for a replacement, resulting in an invitation to play!

While a bit hesitant, I asked what kind of event they were trying to throw and what kind of music they wanted; they said I could play anything as long as I brought some vibes. Given that I've seen them at the local rave a few times and they came out when I was playing there myself, I figured I'd give it a shot while limiting the amount of songs with Japanese vocals in them (but they are still 99% Japan-related tracks ehehe) and see what happened. I was told I'd be two of four, so figured it would be a good slot time to pump up the party with some dnb and later into some uplifting hardcore. Funnily enough, I ended up opening due to various party shenanigans, which turned out to be a bit of a blessing; this was the first time I ever actually opened for a live event and was fantastic prep for opening at Anibash that was to be a week later. 

I honestly had no idea what to expect the reaction to be, but was pleasantly surprised not only that people got down, but seemed to really enjoy it. A lot of them told me they had never heard this kind of music before, despite being familiar with more typical drum and bass and hardcore. It was super cool to get to expose a whole new group of people to the incredible music that we listen to all the time in our scene. Just goes to show you good vibes are good vibes, no matter when or where they're from.

Long story short, when opportunity knocks, the least you can do is see who is at the door! Take a chance now and then! I hope you enjoy!

AniCour! 第4話 appeared and went as swiftly and silently as the stealthiest ninja or a skilled samurai. Despite planning for the event almost since 第3話, it was upon me before I knew it, and what an event it was. I'm continually blown away by how creative everyone is; DJs had all kind of mashups from 3-track layered bangers to ethereal OST symphonies, anime-theme connections, incredible story weaving, and passion exploding from both the music and visuals. It's been wonderful watching the transition of this event series from primarily a traditional anime (only) music event into one that explores the broader spectrum of anime music, combined with a passion and purpose. I'm happy this exists.

Going into crafting, I knew I wanted to take this set as an opportunity to focus a bit more on creating an atmosphere and strong story. I also wanted to do a theme set, and between returning to Japan recently and considering what kind of story I wanted to tell, I took a stab at only using music from Samurai and Ninja anime, with a focus on rap, rock, jazz, and instrumental tracks. The set begins with a more idealized vision of what being a samurai or ninja is, but then shifts to display the more brutal reality of what it entails and the introspection that comes with it, concluding with overcoming those realities and embracing what it means to be a true warrior. 

In terms of sound, there was an emphasis on traditional Japanese instruments and music, in addition to horns and percussive vocals. There were a lot of tracks that I unfortunately didn't get to include, such as ATTACK HAUS  漸-ZEN, but I did get to include some old favorites that I never get to hear, like Akai Usagi. Despite loving a lot of the transitions in this set, favorite transitions were Bowl Man into Heart of Sword and Glorious Days into Gospel of the Throttle. with my favorite mashup being the Kaen x Mists x Mystline x Layback mashup sequence. As expected, I couldn't resist another chance to make another Believe It mashup; I'm starting to think that I have made the most mashups with that song on the planet. Despite having multiple tracks from the same series, they were all at least from different seasons, and in the case of Kenshin, very intentional to portray his character both before and after the darker section. 

No matter what life throws at you, approach it with your strongest Samurai Heart! Until next time!

For those of you unfamiliar with J-Core Live (check them out on Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/neodashzerox) and their online events, Neodash Zerox, together with Harley Diver, have been crafting a story that has spanned multitudes of events over the years, and Masters of the COREniverse was the final phase of the current arc, which follows the adventures of Jane Core and Aimi as they travel through space and time to find pieces of the J-CORE. Since I'm a huge fan of their lore, I wanted to put a lot of emphasis in crafting my set both visually and musically to flesh out their storylines. In their art and lore, they draw heavily on Megaman and Sonic, so I made sure to include tracks and visuals from both. Additionally, as the event name and promo art strongly reminded me of He-Man: Masters of the Universe, and given that it is now officially December, I couldn't resist a little memery at the end. Please forgive me!

Musically, I knew I'd like to include a lot of songs with tech/game sounds and samples, and also have a balance between songs with a lot of space and songs filled with complicated drum patterns. I also focused on songs that feature heavy melodies to help convey a bit more of an emotional story. It was honestly really refreshing to make a set like this; JCL is one of the few places that I get to play where I really feel like this kind of music and the effort I put into my storycraft is really appreciated. Truly an amazing community!

This time around, my favorite layers were GHOST IN THE SHELL ARISE x Ghost in the Shell, Fidget Spinner x Epsilon, PARANOiA x Scarlet Police, and EXE3 x Mind/ /Pulse.
