What an amazing time! As strange as it may sound, all through the 2010s I would hear stories about the legendary anime raves in Europe. Over the airwaves I'd hear news about super cool events that I felt I would never get the chance to go to, and since those times I've always wanted party with the Europeans in the scene. In those days, the Europeans always seemed to be the ones that knew the newest music coming out of Japan, and without a doubt their musical tastes had a huge impact on me in so many ways. To think that all these years later not only would I have the chance to meet some of these online personas in person, but even have the opportunity to play in front of them! While I had gotten to know a few of them over the years, the vast majority I had never had the chance to meet in person. In particular, I finally was able to meet and spend time with one of my favorite DJs of all time, and that was a truly magical experience I'll never forget. It's crazy how two words spoken with a Norwegian accent ended up having such a life-changing impact on me!

A lot of things were going through my mind when I was preparing for this set. While I had a decent grasp on what the older fans who've been in the euroscene for years enjoyed, the younger European anime fans were still a mystery to me. What shows did they like? What genres do they enjoy? How knowledgeable are they about anime-adjacent things like Touhou? With the subtitle of "new beginnings" in mind, I wanted to ensure that the set contained songs that were relatively popular and nearly universal amongst modern anime fans, yet at the same time make sure to give proper shout outs to the older community that taught me so me and showed me so much music. I wanted to toss in a track with lyrics in a European language, as well as a regional exclusive opening song. And, of course, how could I go to Europe and not play Eurobeat?! Given the time slot, I started with a comfy love-centric house theme before making it a party, then turned up the energy with a speedy Shounen block which shifted into bangers with a bit more emotion behind them, finally concluding with a fun classic Touhou track. 

As a side note, this is the first time I've uploaded a live show recording. It's not perfect; there are a few spots where levels could've been much better. I flubbed a loop and had to adapt in one spot, and I missed a bpm shift that I had to swiftly correct on the fly. In the end though, I figured that in the spirit of live music and being there in person, it was worth overlooking these errors in favor of providing the raw experience.

Premiered May 27th in a distant parking lot during Anime North in Toronto, Canada.
*As there are no audio recordings of the event, this is a re-recording shortly after the show. I got very drunk to try and recreate the experience. Please forgive the smol errors!*

Lots of anime conventions, including Anime North, have raves. As with any large event, people of all power levels come and hope to hear the songs they love and dance the night away. However, those with the highest power levels are often left in the cold, with only the distant sound of old classics and the current hits echoing in the distance. If you're lucky, there may even be anime songs! Yet in this frozen wasteland, tucked away in the furthest corner of a parking lot, is a U-Haul truck. Inside you'll find wall scrolls, fumos, an arcade cabinet, camping chairs, and a variety of drinks. And it is at this truck that AniMaple holds the legendary Truck Rave, with support from people that have spent too much time on imageboards, 

I've heard about the Truck Rave for a number of years now, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The vibes were real. It was quite possibly the coolest party involving people from the internet that I've had the chance to attend, let alone play at. Everyone was kind and friendly, chatting with others, playing geimu, performing wotagei, or dancing the night away. Truly a magical place!

Musically, I wanted to keep this set relatively simple in terms of actual mixing since I knew I would be horribly intoxicated. Given that my slot was right around when the sky would be dark, I wanted to go fast and pretty heavy to solidify the transition from daytime fun to nighttime rave with an exclusive focus on anime songs both new and old with a dash of memery, especially considering the amount of r/a/dio listeners that I knew were attending. In particular I wanted to play "I wanna be Radio Happy" by @waffuru since I had made a promise to play it live for him after using it at MAGFest the year before. Given that leafland is a bit colder than burgerland, I tried to create the sensation of bursting through the last bit of spring into the beginning of the summer ahead. While it's not the most complex set, sometimes it's nice to let the songs play out, especially when people want to dance or hear their favorite verse (which sometimes isn't the one featured in an OP/ED!) May you all have a fantastic summer, and I hope you enjoy!

Endless thanks to AniMaple for hosting and inviting me to play, the Truck Rave crew for keeping the spirit alive, waffuru, kyubae, mercury.lamp, Qnia, RipVanWrenkle, Samuu, a variety of insufferable tripfags and oldfags, and every single person that was there. I'll do my best to come back next year and party again!
