Always Sleeping In

simple words are hard to hear 
when inactivated fears appear 
and still ringing in my ears
my contempt from twenty years
of listening 
to bullshit

who are we to define 
our lives within the confines 
of words that categorize 
with very rigid lines
that keep the collars tight 
and help them sleep at night?

who am i to write a poem of 14 lines
complete with words that rhyme
and then get canonized 
for telling bullshit lies? 
there’s no escaping life

i sleep with talk radio on, but i'll turn it off if they put on a song
how do they play it like that? music sometimes makes me sad, 
i can't listen to it at night, i'd have to turn on the light
because i live in a wasteland by the shore
and something tells me I cant dream for myself anymore

a caller left in the lurch
she asked us "who would kiss the mottled birch, and move quietly around the lake?" 
press your lips to the birch and wait.
they live in a light house by the shore, and said its lovely by the waters of labrador.

i sleep with talk radio on, but i'll turn it off if they turn on a song.
i'd let the song get to my head, and that is my biggest regret,
songs are societies breath, songs of community death.
so i get up and look at the harbour, and think its lovely by the water
