A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

Die unendliche Geschichte (Reinterpretation)

Der Beginn des Winters. Der Atem wird sichtbar. Die junge Qelosa ist auf dem Weg zu ihrer Lieblingsbibliothek. Sie lebt zusammen mit ihrer Mutter in einer kleinen Wohnung. Der Vater ist verunglückt. Seitdem zieht sich das junge Mädchen immer mehr zurück in ihre Lieblingswelt. Die grenzenlose Welt der Bücher. Kurz vor ihrer Lieblingsbibliothek sieht sie, dass kein Licht brennt. Ist die Bibliothek geschlossen? Es ist doch Samstag. Qelosa versucht ihr Glück und geht an die Tür der Bücherei. Sie ist einen Spalt offen. Sie tritt hinein und wundert sich. Hat Bixa, der Biobliotheksaufseher, vergessen die Türe abzusperren? Sie ruft nach ihm. Keine Antwort. Sie betätigt den Lichtschalter und macht sich auf zu ihrer Lieblingsabteilung. Fantastische Geschichten und Märchen. Dort kann sie sich am besten verlieren. Mit all den Fabelwesen, Kreaturen, Königen, Jongleuren und Prinzessinnen. Sie sucht sich eine ruhige Ecke und nimmt ein schillerndes, leuchtendes Buch zur Hand.
Nach einer Weile des Lesens, beobachten sie ihre Umgebung. Sie hat sich verändert. Wo befindet sie sich gerade? Ist sie noch in der Bibliothek? In weiter Ferne sieht sie Bixa, der in der Form einer Kreuzung zwischen Giraffe und Frosch erscheint. Ein Friraff. Qelosa erkennt seine Gesichtszüge. Sie eilt zu ihm. Vor ihr bricht ein riesiges Loch in die Erde. Bixa, in der Gestalt eines Friraff, fällt hinein. Unter tosendem Gebrummel und hoffnungslosem Geschrei, wirft das Friraff dem jungen Mädchen ein Amulett und eine Rolle entgegen. «Hilf mir, erfüll deinen Auftrag und rette Fantarsi!»
Ihr stockt der Atem. Sie nimmt das mächtige Amulett auf sich und hängt es um ihren Hals. Als sie die Papierrolle öffnet und darin beginnt zu lesen, wird sie kreidebleich.
Ein Rätsel. Sie sollte sich losmachen, aber wohin? Sie umgibt ein Gefühl, seit sie das Amulett an sich trägt. 
Wo befindet sie sich und was ist ihr widerfahren? Sie macht sich auf den Weg...

There is a German word, Weltschmerz (Welt - world + Schmerz - pain [ˈvɛltʃmɛɐ̯ts]), which, aside from all its pessimistic and drab meanings, can be described as ¹⁾ the feeling experienced by a person who has realized that physical reality could never satisfy the needs of their mind or ²⁾ the abstract sorrow about the fate of mankind and despair from the consciousness of their powerlessness to change the existing state of affairs. In essence, weltschmerz hits the fan. And even if everything is not as critical, each of us has at least once in their life lamented the imperfection of the world around us. Hence, everything we create, @mmmaaaeeesss’ set being one of them, either contributes to that imperfection, or is our idea of perfection.

Der Weg ist das Ziel, aber jeder Weg braucht auch passende Musik. Nur gut ist sein Cockpit ausgestattet voller Werkzeuge, um diesem Mangel schnellstens Abhilfe zu schaffen.

„Sorry, dass es etwas länger gedauert hat, aber dafür habe ich den Podcast mit extra viel Liebe gemacht. Die Idee für diesen Mix hatte ich schon länger und ich freue mich sehr, dass du mir diesen tollen Anlass geliefert hast, das Ganze endlich zum Klingen zu bringen. Ich wollte gern einen grooving Summer-Mix mit vielen Hits machen, der möglichst viel Optimismus verbreitet und Mut macht - der Krise zum Trotz! Mich tröstet nämlich kein Toilettenpapier. Die Musik ist mein mentaler Fallschirm, um diese schwierige Situationen zu überstehen. Zudem erinnert mich jeder Beat daran, dass ein freies und buntes Leben in Gemeinschaft das Wertvollste ist!
