Navona Records presents PINNACLE VOL. 2, a collection of contemporary chamber works by composers John A. Carollo, Edmund Cionek, Sarah Wallin Huff, Santiago Kodela, Adnan Marafi, Amintas Silva, Joseph T. Spaniola, and Kong-Yu Wong, that highlight the melodic, emotive, and dramatic styles offered by today’s chamber music. Throughout the album, the composers explore the cyclicity of life and nature. Simple melodies rise to complexity to represent a father’s inspiration, classical and pop sounds blend to illustrate the boundary between land and sea, rondos conjure the ebb and flow of flooding, and musical idioms combine to bring cultural tradition and modernity together as one.

Since Opeth is among my all-time favourite bands I took the liberty to arrange their song "Coil" for classical guitar.  I decided to shift the accompaniment on the second verse to create more variety and change the colour of the piece.

"Coil" is the opening track out of "Watershed", the ninth full-length studio album by the Swedish progressive metal band Opeth.

“Il Salvatore” (Waltz), for guitar, is a musical-souvenir dedicated to my first nephew, and godson, Salvador Gómez Kodela. The piece was written in Dublin, Ireland during the years 2017 - 2018, while pursuing my Master’s Degree in Music and Media Technologies from the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department of Trinity College Dublin.

In an attempt to portray Salvador’s quirky and whimsical character, this composition explores the use of the so-called conventional tonalities yet with particular alterations to certain pitches. A “drop-D” 6th string, minor and major second intervals, and use of chromatic lines are some of the traditional techniques this short waltz employs. On a more contemporary aspect, the scratching of the lower steel-coated strings emulates the memorable laughter product of Salvador’s playfulness, and will surely evoke a smile on the listener.

This is one of the many pieces I will be dedicating to my family members, close relatives, and friends. My purpose of writing music for the people who I hold in high regard is simply as a token of gratitude for the role they play during my short transition of this so-called life.

Daydreaming

Santiago Kodela is an Argentinean classical guitarist and composer working in the areas of concert, solo, chamber, and choral music. His works explore the ethereal aspects of sound and harmony, exploring intensely the areas of iso-rhythms and metric modulation.

He creates ever-so-slight variations of pre-defined rhythmic cells through harmony, melody, and rhythm, preventing the listener to anticipate the music yet retaining engagement throughout. His works combine elements of both classical and contemporary eras aiming to create unique and tantalising musical colours.

In 2018, Santiago completed a Master’s degree in Music and Media Technologies (Trinity College Dublin) where he specialised in audio production and contemporary music composition. His thesis focused on composing a classical-guitar quartet suite based on the works of composers Allan Holdsworth and Fredrik Thordendal. The suite, mastered by Grammy-winner Mastering Engineer legend Bob Katz, is set to be released by North-American classical-music label PARMA Recordings.

Current works include music for solo guitar, more classical-guitar quartets, and chamber music.

Bewildered Soliloquies is an exploratory piece that focuses on dark yet relatable dialogues, shifting yet recognisable moods, and an overall familiar yet distant melancholy. The work revolves on temporary monologues, pairing of conversations, and inclusive discourses.

A piece that develops slowly and gives prominence to the different characters within their own realms. A play with protagonists that work diversely. Sometimes in consonance, at times individually, and often as one.

Each characters fulfils a much needed role within the overall scene. Intertwining their importance, and often allowing their fellow colleagues to gain leadership throughout the piece.

Each character plays a role that when analysed from a broader perspective gives meaning and sense to the overall auditory scene. Hence, Bewildered Soliloquies.
