On December 19, 1981, the RNLI lifeboat Solomon Browne sank whilst trying to rescue the crew of the Union Star, a coaster in distress off the coast of Cornwall. All eight lifeboat crew members and eight of the Union Star crew perished in the storm.

There were two brothers in the crew of the lifeboat, but the captain would only allow one of them aboard. He knew they were not coming back.
