Swamps Up Nostrils - thomp son

Some binaural recordings from the time I went on holiday to Tokyo.  I stayed in Sangubashi from the 15th of December 2013 until the 14th of January 2014.   Recordings mostly done in and around Sangubashi, Yoyogi, Ueno, Meguro, and Shinjuki.  Recorded with DIY binaural mics and a Sony PCM-D50 sound recorder.

I made a magic device that makes it possible for us to listen in on what's going on in the occult electromagnetic domain.  By attatching the knackpoints (crockodile clamps), to various metal personalities, the resonance of the hidden world can now be heard by human ears.  

This track is the audio coming from the device when it was connected to either a metal barbeque shaped like a pyramid, or a metal ladder lying on the ground, I can not quite remember.  The first bleep appeared from the device simultaniously as a train passed while it blew it's horn, it sounded quite joyous.  Then it turned very quiet, almost whispering only to itself, so I had to turn up the volume on the recording to hear the subtle fluxuations in it's enterpretation of the aura of the electromagnetic environment.

Documentation of the Pure Data patch "thabeath", created in 2013. This program takes input from the keyboard and translates it to some kind of spastic algorithmic dance music for deviant pseudo-humans. That means that all the changes made during this example (except the volume faders and mute buttons) are directly caused by text inputed into a text box. This is one of the first experiments I had into a form of text-based algorithmic beat music, so the result is not that varied, you pretty much have the same sound palette going, only with changes in rythm and pitch. The program contains 5 modules, two different bass line generators, one bleepy synth line generator, one electronic drum set of sorts, and an extra bass drum module. The patch will be made public, as well as the custom library I am using as part of it. Whenever that chooses to happen.

Field recordings from Hemnkjølen, near the Auset family cabin, in Hemne kommune, Norway.  Mostly just birds, with a few human elements appearing from time to time in the background.  Recordings done with some DIY binaural  microphones and a sony PCM-D50 portable sound recorder on the morning of the 7th of June in 2014.

Had a walk along Ladestien in Trondheim, 11. December 2011, around noonish.  Recorded some binaural shots by the shore.  Just some relaxing winter ambience featuring the type of sounds you migth encounter in this area, like waves, birds, boats, planes, puny human hikers, and such.  Recorded with some DIY binaural microphones I made myself hooked up to my portable recorder.

Documentation from the concert Swamps Up Nostrils and Ada Mathea Hoel played at Klubb Kanin 17.02.17, at Trondheim Kunstforening in Trondheim.  The recording was made with my old Sony PCM-D50, using it´s native microphones.  Was ment to tap the mixer, but something happened, as usual, so we only got the room recording.

Brought my recorder and my "loose fit" set of DIY binaural binaural mikes when I went out cross-country skiing in Trondheim this afternoon.The sounds were recorded around the light slopes going to and from the parking lot at Bekken, Estendstadmarka.This track have got some dudes talking about the hows and whats of cross-country skiing, while someone else is also doing some lessons in the background.Then they meet some friends that also are out skiing.Then they move along.Then some other skiers pass by.

A short while ago I got a Black Death noise synth in the mail, from http://soundcloud.com/martin_howse .  This is a wicked little noisetrument loaded with plagueness. ( Read all about it over here http://www.1010.co.uk/org/blackdeath.html .)  

Today I created a patch in Pure Data for tomorrows concert with CT Lab.  http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/?set=a.10150562991375723.371805.608545722&type=1   This patch is controlling itself by monitoring its own volume curves, and using information from this to basically controll all the action in the entire patch, wich is pretty simple and consists only of a few samplers and a filter for the synth.  

These tracks were created by improvising with the black death and running the signal through the generative pure data patch.

Metaverk was a collaborative sound installation created by Arnfinn Killingtveit and Øyvind Brandtsegg, as a special opening project for Trondheim Electronic Arts Center´s new gallery space at Nedre Bakklandet 20C in Trondheim, and part of the program of the art festival Trondheim Open 2018.  The project was curated by Espen Gangvik.  It was shown from 1. November to 11. November.  The work activated the room by utilizing several computers, microphones, speakers and transducers.  Some of the computers were independent sound entities listening to their environment and responding in their own way, either directly or through abstracted memories of events passed, others were directly connected to interactive stations in the room, like furniture and windows with contact microphones that the audience could interact with and thus in a direct fashion play the room like an instrument.  The roof and windows were also rigged with transducers, making these parts also function as speakers.  The resulting expression was on of an everchanging generative soundscape.  Anything happening, or not happening, in the space, affected how the composition developed.

Metaverk

One hour of my computer making generative minimalistic bleeps and blops and pling plong without any progression of any sort and not much else going on, recorded live from a Pure Data patch in progress.  Another exploration in artificial stupidity and meaningless sonic behaviour.  The generative score is created by the computer listening to it´s nearby sonic environment(whatever is picked up by the microphones).  The score is then interpreted and transmuted into sound with the help of some simple oscillators and filters.

This track is a reconstruction of some sounds sent to me by Steinar Stensen during the Corona pandemic.  In addition to using Steinar´s files, I got some local cranes to lay down some vocals for the track.  The cranes, Tranhild and Tranulf, were recorded in April 2020, at their easter hangout at Gaustadvatnet, a small lake in the village of Korsveien, Melhus, Norway.

Live improvisation with an experimental drum machine i'm working on in Pure Data, the 'Hoverdrum', wich is a basic 16 step drum sequencer with a twist, as it does weird polyrythmic manipulations on the main beat.  The 'hoverdrum' got 4 instruments, 'bassdrum', 'snare', and two 'hi-hats', with fields checkable for inclusion of manipulations.  Bassdrum also poses as a pseudo-bassline.  In addition there are semi-generative effect manipulations being done on each instrument globally.  All drum sounds are based on custom drums made with oscillators from scratch, no samples are used.

Binaural recording done between Dalen Hageby and Lilleby in Trondheim, at a quarter past one on January 14th 2010, when I was out testing my DIY binaural earplug microphones, made from a couple of old earplugs and a couple of very cheap electret microphone elements.  I am very impressed with the sound quality on these I must say. This clip features some heavy machinery, cars, birds, and walking on a snow covered road.  (watch out for the car at 2:55!!)    

The recording was made with the DIY binaural mikes hooked up to a Sony PCM-D50 recorder.

I did some recordings with a hydrophone that was sligthly bad. This track is the result of fucking these recordings around in Pure Data, with a somewhat generative approach.
