Swarm Intelligence’s unique take on industrial techno is back, with the second instalment on his self-titled label, coming this November.

Fiercely intense, dramatic and cutting-edge, Swarm Intelligence’s distinctive take on techno has garnered him a solid following amongst the true underground of the scene. Following on from the widely supported launch of his label, SWRM002 is a striking next step – a testament to the quiet confidence of a skilled artist unafraid to eschew norms and carve his own path. This second EP continues to draw inspiration from dystopian themes of new and imagined technologies and their resulting societal impact.

‘Critical Signal’ was produced during the global pandemic, and iteratively refined over the following years. Grinding basses and tense atmospherics sit atop a thunderous four-to-the-floor. Its message to humanity is as relevant now as it was then – “you are resilient, you will prevail”. In ‘Mass Disinformation’ a visceral, bleak and unsettling sonic landscape punctuated by a slamming groove is an apt metaphor for the psychological warfare being unleashed on the world today.

Opening the B-side, the uplifting glory of ‘Digital Immortality’ lifts the tone of the release. Here, Swarm’s signature glitchy, broken beats complement beautiful melodic swells and a rolling bass line. The track imagines a digital afterlife where, upon uploading our consciousness, we leave our bodies behind. Bringing the EP to a close, “Singularity Dawns” is the most freeform, cinematic composition. Its obscure broken rhythms and traversing sequence tells the tale of an AI becoming self-aware and discovering its capacity to feel.

Swarm Intelligence drops eleven monumental tracks on Acre Recordings. ‘Black Iron Prison’ is pitch black stuff: foreboding and forbidding work, showcasing a more mechanistic, abrasive and brilliantly tense sound. The tracks span industrial rhythmic noise, searing electronic ambiences, half-step technoid rhythms and pounding 4/4 beats, all suffused with an anxiety and the sense of sinister things to come. Whilst fearsomely heavy, this is nevertheless a hauntingly nuanced unification of textured and rich ambiences with bitter, visceral beats. If darkness can coruscate then this outstanding release does just that.

This mix is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or "Forest Bathing". I find this to be such a beautiful concept. It is something that has helped me a lot in my life. There is also a rich and deep Irish mythology surrounding forests and their magical inhabitants. The mix taps into this ancient mysticism as it takes us deeper and deeper into the woods.

Ferozmente intensa, dramática y vanguardista, la visión distintiva del techno de Swarm Intelligence le ha ganado un gran número de seguidores entre el verdadero underground de la escena. Siguiendo desde el lanzamiento de su sello, SWRM002, que cuenta con un gran apoyo, es un siguiente paso sorprendente: un testimonio de la tranquila confianza de un artista experto que no teme evitar las normas y forjar su propio camino. 'Critical Signal' se produjo durante la pandemia global y se perfeccionó de forma iterativa durante los años siguientes. Aquí, los ritmos rotos y con fallas característicos de Swarm complementan hermosas ondas melódicas y una línea de bajo ondulante. La pista imagina una vida futura digital donde, al cargar nuestra conciencia, dejamos atrás nuestros cuerpos. "This mix is a collection of music that has accompanied me throughout the last year or so. Actually, I see it as less of a mix, and more a case of sitting down with a good friend and sharing the sounds that have excited and inspired me lately. Though I eat, sleep and breathe techno, my taste and interests run far wider. I hope this podcast gives the listener a sense of this, maybe even an idea of where my sound has its roots."

In this thought-provoking exploration, the artist challenges listeners to confront the consequences of a near future where physical and mental augmentation are commonplace. In a world where limbs can be upgraded, where consciousness can be uploaded, where memories can be digitally archived and shared on social media, where our AI clones can liberate us from menial tasks... What remains of ourselves? Who is our self?

Swarm Intelligence draws influences from black metal, industrial-tinged dub, and post-rock, splicing these with his distinctive take on techno to devastating effect. "Dejected," the inaugural track, unleashes grinding walls of feedback against a relentless broken beat, its foreboding atmosphere heightened by a menacing low growl of distorted bass that permeates the unease. It's a disquieting overture that sets the stage for the tumultuous journey ahead.

The second track, “Eros” envelops the listener in a visceral soundscape, where haunting atmospheres intertwine with grinding feedback and pounding percussion. Initially tense, the track evolves into an unexpected and almost euphoric climax, adding an unforeseen emotional depth to the sonic narrative. Yet, beneath the surface, an undercurrent of tension remains—an ever-present reminder of the fragility of our self.

On the flip side, "Inciter" channels inner fury through a guttural chant punctuating a Birmingham-styled broken beat, marching forth with unyielding force.

Finally, "Portal" offers a moment of quiet introspection, as haunting pads echo a mournful refrain while micro recordings of whirring machinery are assembled into the percussion section. It serves as a poignant curtain-closer.

Through "The Shattered Self," Swarm Intelligence challenges listeners to reconsider their perceptions of identity, consciousness, and agency in an age where the machine and the human converge. It's a haunting and profound journey—one that invites introspection and contemplation long after the final reverb tails fade into silence.

A loop-based DJ mix of field, contact and electromagnetic recordings. These were captured using a Zoom H4N and an assortment of microphones including binaural, coil pickup and piezo models.

This is it, the finale. For our last ever Stalker Radio show, we bring you a 2-hour, fully-improvised hardware set. Recorded in one take with no edits – there may be as many chaotic moments as there are cohesive ones, but that is a pretty good reflection on the past 5 years of Stalker Radio!
