Titanic OST "Original Sound Tracks"

It's just a short song about thinking things must be a certain way to an extreme, instead of just going with how they are when it does not really matter.

I played the MIDI file years ago, and there are the usual errors I make, especially in the piano timing. And I'm sorry a little distortion crept into some of the harmony parts. But it is pretty good, and will keep me from having to wait over two weeks to put it up :). I may have come up with the title first (I don't remember) based on the main cadence and the title of the old, and very different, 1940s song "Buttons & Bows." Hope you like it.

Hello, all. Once again, I have been greatly honored by having a very talented internet friend want to re-do one of my previous songs. This time, it is the lovely and engaging Sarah Wiley, who asked if she could cover my previous song Something Ridiculous (which was actually meant for a female vocalist). How could I say no? She's much more vivacious than I am, she's a better singer, she looks better in a dress... she has it all. And she added so much of her own great style to that song.

Given the limitations of our mutual equipment and those of my skill as a mixmaster, there is a bit of forgiveness needed for the overall sound quality, though none of that has to do with Sarah's terrific voice. We hope you enjoy this "remix." :)

Raise The Titanic - Main Title

I once got it in my head to write a screenplay about an orphaned young girl named Abby who is kidnapped by a secretive organization for nefarious purposes, only to be taken again by a rival organization that turns out to be headed by the mother Abby thought was long dead. The details were never fleshed out (including the title, which is why I just called it "Abby" for now), and the outline is not that dissimilar from the recent film Hanna. But there were a couple main points I had worked out: that Abby's parents had supposedly died in a fire Abby thinks she caused, and that Abby remembers a vacation house where she and her parents had happy times. As is my wont, I composed little snippets of music for those scenes in my mind.

"There Once Was a Girl" is for a scene near the beginning where Abby remembers standing by and watching her house burn. We first only see the orange glow on her face in close-up, but then there is a slow, long pull back so that everyone comes to realize she is watching not a happy scene but a very sad one. There is a moment at the end of that segment where there is a short break (about 1:15) which leads to another memory where she remembers herself using a match to try to get a better look in the head (to see the mind) of one of her dolls, and she believes that caused the fire. It turns out her mother actually set it, to try to save her daughter and herself from the organization that eventually takes Abby, and from which her mother rescues her (again, details are not forthcoming :) ). This was supposed to lead into a longer segment where she remembers growing up in foster homes without much care, and that would have had more music, which is why this segment just sort of ends. And if it had actually gone anywhere, I would have made the beginning sound just a little less like Moby's Porcelain, but that just matched up perfectly with this at the time.

Abby OUAT v2

"Dreams from the Past" was for another memory scene later in the film where Abby remembers halcyon days with her parents at their beach house retreat on the ocean, first running and playing on the beach, then (second part of the segment, 2:37 ) curled up inside at night reading a book and doing other family things together. This is a more complete-sounding piece, though it was also supposed to lead (if I had more time) to more traumatic memories from that same house, which her mother was partly using as a retreat to keep the sinister organization at bay, though they eventually found it. I didn't use a metronome for this one, which is why it sounds a little rushed sometimes.



Abby Dreams of the Past

This is another of the songs I composed for a not-made, fictional musical version of the James Cameron film "Titanic" (following "Stay," uploaded earlier). This is a three-part song, with each part sung by a different character lamenting his fate and the fate of the sinking ship (with the three coming together to sing the very end). These characters, based solely on those presented in the film (which was based on, but not necessarily adhering to, historical events) are, in order of appearance in the song:

Captain E. J. Smith: He appears in his cabin, where, shell-shocked, he has taken refuge to go down with his ship. His instinct was to let the Titanic's engines properly "run themselves in" before pushing the ship to full speed, but -- in his last transatlantic voyage of a long, distinguished career -- he was goaded into powering up the engines to maximum to try to set a speed record crossing the Atlantic. This was despite the fact that he knew of iceberg warnings for his travel lanes. When he realizes the enormity of what has happened, and realizes rescue will not arrive before the ship sinks, he cannot handle it, and retreats to his cabin to await his doom. He leaves his more level-headed crewmen in charge of the evacuation before he drowns, and laments his decisions in his last few moments.

Thomas Andrews: The shipbuilder who oversaw the construction of Titanic. He is shown below decks, where he also awaits his fate after trying to help others get to safety. He is the first to realize the ship will sink once it struck the iceberg as badly as it did. He also realizes that he designed a special davit to hold enough lifeboats for everyone on board. The inclusion of the lifeboats on the additional davits was overruled by his superiors, though, as it was thought the extra boats would clutter the deck, and were superfluous since Titanic was "unsinkable." Mr. Andrews acquiesced, and comes to regret it during the last minutes of his life.

J. Bruce Ismay: He is sitting in a lifeboat several hundred yards from the ship, watching it go down and hearing the screams of those trapped on board. Mr. Ismay is the businessman and White Star executive who thought of the idea to build the largest, grandest ship on the sea (and the largest moving object created by man to that point). He was determined to impress everyone with Titanic's size *and* speed, and is the one who goaded Captain Smith into pushing the engines to full steam ahead. He is full of bravado, but when it is clear the ship will sink, he pusillanimously jumps into a lifeboat meant for women and children, and is allowed to leave with it. As he sits in the lifeboat and hears the death throes he helped bring about, it clearly weighs heavily on his conscience.

Ship of Dreams (Capt. Smith, Andrews, Ismay)

One time while driving through Canada -- which I usually do when coming home from where I now live -- I saw the abbreviation for the Ontario Provincial Police on the side of one of their cars. It was an opportunity I couldn't get let slip by, or get out of my head.

The result of that happenstance is this totally made-up narrative song, an adaptation of Naughty by Nature's hit, "O.P.P." Note that this song has NO research behind it regarding the police procedures or traffic law in Ontario or anywhere else, and is not meant as a real representation of anything except some of the named places involved (and the insurance card, that is actually required of all U.S. drivers in Canada, though only a small fraction may know it).

Dedicated to the fine people of Canada and their excellent law enforcement officers.

The Titanic

This is another song I wrote for my imaginary "Titanic" stage musical adaptation. It is meant to be sung by Jack some time around his "king of the world" declaration, and expresses his optimistic point of view about his "rootless existence." My voice is in the wrong range and not experienced enough to do it justice, but I hope it suffices to get the idea across.

I put a new vocal and punched up the mix of this track, one of the first I ever posted.  I hope you enjoy the do-over.  From the original description:

Another original song I've worked on. As before, this is a MIDI file with all-synthetic instruments, played on a keyboard that wasn't even top-of-the-line when it came out twelve years ago, by someone who doesn't really know how to play the keyboard that well. But it gets in the ballpark of what's in my head, and -- if I say so myself -- sounds all right enough to at least post for friends and family to see. I'd love to see what real musicians could do with this.

The inspiration for this song came when I was driving into Boston one night. Coming inbound over a high hill on Route 2 near "Arlmont," there was a great view of the lighted city laid out before me, and I wanted to put the feeling of seeing that -- and thinking that each point of light ahead may be attached to at least one person with an entire life going on -- into a song. This is the result. Enjoy (if you can :) )!

Hard to Starboard (Titanic Soundtrack)

This one began life as a variation on the old piano tutorial staple "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" (from my long-ago piano lessons).  The title comes from some lyrics I heard when this one was coming together in my head.  But as I turned it over, I thought that as a lyrics it was a little on the nose, and, moreover, the song sounded better as a straight instrumental.  But that phrase still evoked the feeling of the music (as in the picture) that I imagined gopng with it.  So, here it is, brought to life through keyboard MIDI playing.  Everything was played in on my Alesis Q25 MIDI controller (along with some augmentation by further note-drawing in ProTools).  Enjoy!
