Running through selections at turns funky and freaky, Mediumship, the collaboration between Addison L. and Seance Michael makes the most of dancefloor euphoria. We're so happy to announce the first track from our latest release, @xharlow's "Light is Gone" from the artist's 'Cathars' EP:

The second entry in a Triptych of records dwelling around medieval philosophy and mysticism, Cathars takes its name from a gnostic subsect of Christianity that openly challenged the Catholic Church at the height of the Middle Ages. Prioritizing asceticism and teaching that all human spirits were angels, in sexual equality, the group was ultimately eradicated by the Catholic Church, burned alive in the Siege of Montségur (which appears on the cover of the tape). 

Cathars is by far Schmidt's most introspective work with tracks like "Metempsychosis" using hypnotic arrangements of medieval choral and "Credentes" twisting vocals through a landscape of chiming percussion samples. This medieval conceptual arc is paired with Schmidt's own autobiographical moments of darkness during the fall of 2020 and subsequent harsh winter. Schmidt left New York to take care of a family member in the midst of a mental health crisis, unable to be aided by a collapsing medical infrastructure during the pandemic. "She is Found" is a collage recording of as they a familiar work during their time together. Other tracks find Schmidt exploring their own suffering after a painful failed hip surgery during the same period. Coupling moments of lyrical ambience with the clattering rhythms and anxious string arrangements of more club-ready tracks like "Light is Gone," the record sees Schmidt working through the pain and isolation of the past year in the only way they could find: looking back into history and finding comfort in the endurance of the human spirit.

SWEAT MIX 025 - DJ Land Reform

Sweat Equity is thrilled to present the debut single of Michigan-born, New York based musician, artist, DJ and meme admin Boyfriend.dick, the razor-sharp, club-ready “Community Guidelines.” Following up a string of performances, gallery shows, and ongoing digital projects, “Community Guidelines” sees him challenging the current censorship policies of social media platforms, particularly towards queer culture and identities. 

After graduating with a degree in Sociology, BFD moved to New York City to pursue a full-time practice, and quickly found fertile ground. He’s performed across New York and released several projects under the name Goon Soul, including Less Than a Year (2016), Holding (2018), and LIKABLE (with VIGILETTI, 2019). As a performance artist he has been featured in works including Young Boy Dancing Group (OCD Chinatown, 2019), Authority Figure (Knockdown Center, 2016), INNIE (Otion Front Residency, 2017), and most recently showcased a solo performance called BOYFRIEND.DICK’S ENDLESS SCROLL (Highland Park, 2020). He has also recently walked in fashion shows for Barragán Spring ’21, NHIL Men’s Fall ’20, and Willie Norris Fall ’19. He has also produced a range of editions works, most notably a limited edition Boyfriend.dick Tarot Deck, which is a modern take on the tradition of tarot which uses the visual language of memes to represent its archetypes

Under his debut single for the Boyfriend.dick project, this relentless creative drive finds new territory without losing any of the artist’s urgency and character. Over the past two years, he grew a personal finsta into a public meme platform with a following of 60k+, adapting a Discord page for queers from around the world to share memes, news, advice, hentai, nudes, and more, creating a vital community platform that found increasing importance during the isolation and emotional fallout of the Covid-19 outbreak. But that same vitality and growth became a target for Instagram’s Community Guidelines bots, and was shut down last year, separating the many followers who had found a space for connection and community. 

“Community Guidelines” responds in appropriately direct fashion, spinning a string of “censored” sexual allusions over a searing club rhythm, a percussive two minute workout that’s equal parts ribald and righteous, asserting a pride and coy subversion of censorship that never loses sight of keeping the bodies moving, 

The release drops March 4th.

DIVORCE - Tea Lizard's Lament

Capping off a run of releases in the final months of 2017, Sweat Equity closes out its offering of records for our year with Love Thyself, the debut EP from New York producer Dion McKenzie, aka Tygapaw.

As the founder and resident of New York’s venerable QTPOC collective and party Fake Accent, McKenzie has been a figurehead of New York’s nightlife, and is now turning her attention worldwide, with dates in Asia, Europe and the Americas under her belt in the past year. Now, she’s offering another angle on her skills, readying her first outing as a producer and writer.

Showcasing the sheer depth of her abilities as a producer and dancefloor visionary, “Love Thyself” feels like a victory lap of sorts, celebrating her expansive abilities as a sonic curator while marking a continued evolution in her creative voice. Tracks move from baile funk to New York vogue to Baltimore club and back, mixing together McKenzie’s own vision with a well-read sense of track production from any number of classic schools of practice.

Having worked together for over three years, the duo of Tommi Kelly and Danny Orlowski have built a reputation for the staggering energy and speed of their live sets (including one of the more intense performances Bossa Nova Civic Club has seen in recent memory. Jagged synth lines, and blown-out drum machines dot their compositions, with sudden changes in pacing and texture throwing the listener through twisted, warped sonic landscapes, all punctuated by Orlowski’s fierce screams and chants. It’s a sound that manages to address the lineages of electronic music, noise and punk that runs through New York’s musical history.

We love The Carry Nation. From their exceptional parties to their next level energy and deep, deep crates, few DJ’s in New York are as consistently thrilling on stage. On top of that, they’ve come correct, regularly and thoroughly, with a series of strong releases on TRIBAL, Get Up Records and London’s Batty Bass. So when they dropped a pair of tracks into our inbox last year, it felt like magic. 

This winter, Sweat Equity launches back into action with “Still On the Line,” a 5 track single from the always amazing duo of Nita Aviance and Will Automagic. A buoyant and tightly arranged acid workout, “Still on the Line,” sees that duo slicing up vocal chants and breaks, with a 303 buzzing underneath the whole affair. A skillful experiment in pacing and energy, the track breathes and swells, releases its energy, builds it up once again, then fades out to make way for an even spacier dub workout that serves as the “Part 2” of the record. 

The remixes takes a series of twists and turns through the shared sonic material of the original track, moving from the deep, house-inflected funk of DJ Delish’s remix, through the sonic odyssey of the Sweat Equity crew’s rework, on to Batty Bass head Hannah Holland’s breaks-heavy juggling and soaring chords, keeping the original’s taut groove and vocal hooks at the core of the work.

The Carry Nation - Still On The Line (Part 1)

Sweat Equity is thrilled to announce our second record with New York's own Deli Girls, the duo of Danny Orlowski and Tommi Kelly, set for release this February. Mixing together elements of No Wave, Club music, Punk and Noise, the Delis have become one of New York's most treasured hometown heroes, and one of the best live acts in the city. Coming off their 2017 release 'Evidence, 'I Don't Know How to Be Happy' pushes the band's style and delivery to a new level.

Marking an expansion of their sound explored on their first record for Sweat Equity, the DG's bring a tightened sense of dynamics and an expanded sonic palette to the record. Honed over the course of the last year and through tours of the East Coast and Europe, 'I Don't Know How to Be Happy' sees the duo experimenting with overdubs and studio processing, creating dense arrangements that translate the ferocity of the band's legendary live acts.

Granted, the blueprint remains the same: blasting arrangements on drum machine and searing synthesizer elements complemented by Orlowski's cathartic fronting, the band's raw energy and powerful lyrical content remains at the core of these tracks, dealing with police surveillance, oppressive power dynamics and social hypocrisy. Few records feel as urgent and engaged with the world of 2019 as this one, and we couldn't be happier to bring it to you, live and direct.

Sweat Equity is thrilled to present its first entry into the world of wax with XP, a powerful drop from Philadelphia’s DJ Delish. Spanning six tracks, the record is a striking introduction to a singular talent.

DJ Delish lives at the epicenter of East Coast club culture, having cut her teeth on the ballroom circuit as both a DJ and performer. She's also toured as the DJ for another Philadelphia mainstay, Spank Rock, and built a reputation for her rapid-fire track selections and relentless energy. Over the past few years, she’s also unleashed a string of self-released EPs and albums on her SoundCloud, as well as a split single with Sweat Equity’s Macy Rodman. XP marks her first outing on vinyl, and she pulls no punches.

The record is a rich landscape, flawlessly weaving between ballroom, hip-hop, ballads and house. Her command of multiple musical forms speaks to her time both in the booth and on the dancefloor. The vital energy of each track is matched only by the wit and incisiveness of her lyrics, with songs about everything from shady promoters to sexual intrigue. Her wealth of experience and abundant narrative ingenuity bring personal stories and intricate histories to life.

Sweat Equity is thrilled to announce a record from New York’s one and only, the pop maven and freak anthem mastermind, Macy Rodman, who follows up 2017’s 'The Lake' with her newest effort, 'Endless Kindness,' a sprawling and surreal journey through sexuality, power dynamics, desire and drama.

The record dives head first into passions, violence and redemption and draws its energy from Macy’s powerful voice and ever-shifting catalog of personas.The lead single “Greased Up Freak Pt. 1,” explores ferocious sexuality via an expansive range of sexual vantage points.

In addition to spending the intervening years working on 'Endless Kindness,' Rodman simultaneously launched the podcast Nymphowars, “a show about putting dicks down your mouth brought to you by world's smartest and prettiest transsexuals,” that mirrors her increasingly sexual and confessional approach to songwriting.

In “Berlin,” she weaves a staggering, kaleidoscopic send-up of the city’s cultural milieu, a tongue-in-cheek anthem about its hedonistic clubbing culture. In “Hell,” she flips that concept on its ear: “I took a pill and almost died,” giving the same late-night antics a sense of desperation and drama. Similarly, the titular track coils some self-reflection around the previous tracks before ending with the soul-bearing chorus of closer “Best Actress.”

A bold entry into Rodman’s oeuvre, the record is out November 8th.
