Higher Ground

The waves looked gentle from the shoreline,
Soft whispers calling me to stay.
They said, “Come closer, it’s safe here,”
But the calm was only painted that way.
The moment I stepped in, the truth hit—
Cold hands pulling at my knees.
The ocean promised it would hold me,
But it only knows how to seize.

I try to kick, try to rise,
But the surface keeps drifting higher.
And all the comfort I was promised
Was just the ocean—
A practiced liar.

The ocean lied, said it would heal me,
But it pulled me under quietly.
I’m sinking in waters that said they’d keep me safe,
But the truth is buried deep beneath the waves.

But it swallowed every word I tried to give it.
I’m reaching for the surface, reaching for light—
But the current keeps saying I’ll be alright.

The salt sits heavy on my eyelashes,
Like memories I can’t wash away.
