It comes hard to say something about Spain's favourite duo Kyodai, the brothers have an impressive history of talent and timeless anthems, all impregned with their trademark finesse and their love for the perfectly crafted analog sounds. Paving their way to stardom with releases in Freerange, Local Talk and Exploited, they now deliver a pair of inspired dancefloor weapons filled with their flavor.

"Marea" is spanish for "tide", and as the oceans dance to the compass of our moon's gravity, their interpretation does the same with strong swaying dark synths creating a deep and hypnotizing climate perfect for the late night. 

"Palma" goes even deeper as melancholic chords take on the scene building a rich melodic journey for the mind and soul. Arpeggios, a rich amount of analog sounds and a driving bassline play with the mind and soul.

The brothers have a special talent when it comes to making you close your eyes and fly to another dimension of sound. We are happy to have them with us!

I discovered Roy Ayers early in my musical journey. He’s an artist who had a huge influence on me, and over the years, I kept realizing just how important his career was to the history of music at large. 

From jazz to jazz-funk, jazz-fusion, disco, boogie, and even his influence on hip-hop & house—his impact is undeniable.

Today, I’m incredibly moved to see how much he inspired DJs, producers, and musicians across generations. But more than anything, it’s the universal love for him that stands out. Everyone loved Roy, and I think that’s what makes him such an important artist.

I became truly fascinated with his work the day I watched his live performance at Ronnie Scott’s, during the famous Battle of the Vibes. That’s when I realized not just his incredible musicianship but also his sense of humor. He had this incredible emotional range—his music could make you cry, laugh, or dance, sometimes all at once. That really struck me, and from that moment on, I started diving deeper into his music.

Over the years, my passion for his work grew. I started hunting for rare records, original pressings—until one day, I had the chance to see him perform on a rooftop in Brooklyn. He was already past 75 at that point, already fragile, but still so magical. 

Watching him play live as the sun set over the city is an image I’ll never forget. I remember bringing my original pressing of Roy Ayers Ubiquity with me, hoping to get it signed. But I was too shy, too in awe of the moment. It’s a small regret, but also a memory I’ll cherish forever.

With this mix, I wanted to pay tribute to him, as he passed away just a few days ago. 

I decided to take a chronological approach—starting with his debut album West Coast Vibes, moving through his time as Herbie Mann’s vibraphonist, then into his solo work and his years with his band Roy Ayers Ubiquity. From there, I included tracks from his 80s period, some unreleased material released by BBE, and even a few collaborations with Fela Kuti, Wayne Henderson, Guru & Erykah Badu. 

I chose to close the mix with Remember to Remember by Rick Holmes—it felt like the perfect closing theme for this tribute.

May his soul rest in peace and his music lives forever. 

Please note: I deliberately chose not to include his work as a producer for other artists like Sylvia Striplin, Ladies of the 80s, Bobbi Humphrey to name a few, except for Daylight and Remember to Remember. Same for Coffy as this one was a movie soundtrack and not a solo album. 

I also left out most of his collaborations, except for his track with Guru, which felt too important to omit. Additionally, I didn’t include any remixes, as it would have made the mix too long. 

Maybe all of that will be part of another recording one day...

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

Fulfill your soul and free with your mind with the latest installment of Today’s Good News, crafted specifically for Crate Diggers, in support of Crate Diggers Portland 2017. Inspired by records bought and people met from a recent trip around the world, Rev. Shines takes you on a journey of samples and discovery. This is an all-vinyl mixtape, using records found while on the road this past year.

Rev. Shines is a crate digger in its truest sense; Questlove once announced at a show in Portland, “Rev. Shines built my record collection.” Shines has performed in over 15 countries, is 1/3 of the Hip Hop group Lifesavas whom Rolling Stone Magazine touted as a “Top Band to Watch” in 2007, and DJs the most popular Hip Hop dance party in Portland, “Live and Direct”. His mixtape series, Today’s Good News has a cult following and sells out immediately online and at record stores like Turntable Lab.

While working at the Portland landmark record store, Jump Jump, Shines met and sold records to music legends like the aforementioned Questlove, J.Dilla, and Easy Mo Bee. Most importantly, he met the proverbial king of House music production, Kenny Dope, whom invited him on a world tour, DJing and digging in countries like Japan and Australia.

What does Rev. Shines sound like? A decade crossing beat visionary, inspired by golden era Hip Hop, Southern Gospel singers, and funky Brasilians from the 1970’s. His dynamic live sets simultaneously put smiles on faces, get heads nodding, and suggest feelings of an ever-present coolness.

Kruse & Nuernberg have been dropping several hot productions without missing a beat. It was no brainer that they’d be chosen for the fourth volume of our Street King series. We’ve already had the pleasure of having Alex Kenji, Stefano Noferini, and Aki Bergen. Kruse & Nuernberg deliver a deeper element that perfectly fits the diversify the series. This EP provides you with just a taste of what’s to come. The first track is a remix of Sunshine Jones (formerly of Dub Tribe Soundsystem) “I Got Your Back” sets you in a trance you’d swear you were flying to various destinations simultaneously. Next up we have K&N’s remix of the spoken word joint “Flashback” which gives you a bit of that DJ Roland Clark flavor with an extra punch. The Pharcyde’s sophomore album “LabcabinCalifornia” was originally released on November 14th, 1995. The group enlisted a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats, like the cult classic “Runnin.” They also collaborated with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop.” Labcabincalifornia has consistently and continues to reinforce their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.
