Philence — Look Deep

Aaand we're back. Sorry for the lack of updates recently, we've been swamped. Starting this week, we'll be bringing you a new song from the Graveyard (our archive of recordings of defunct bands) every Tuesday, as before. Kicking it off is a song that SBP's founders have long coveted. This is the only known recording of Growth of Alliance's "Penetrate," written and performed in the last few months before they disbanded. One of us plays guitar and this song was the main factor in him buying his first delay pedal—you'll see why.

This is a live version, the track never made it to the studio, but despite the lo-fi recording, it captures the band at the peak of its creativity and capacity for anthemic, driving melodies. Thanks to the folks at Skyline Studios for sharing the video of this 2003 performance at Oakland's iMusicast, one of their last shows, from which we ripped the audio and cleaned it up a little. Sleep In Fame—Apollo's Decline (live at iMusicast 12/11/04)

First real ‪#‎tuesdaytrack‬ in a while.

This was the first song we ever heard from Biclops, which was a relatively short-lived branch of the Postman Syndrome/Day Without Dawn/East Of The Wall/etc. tree. The band released two demos in 2008, this is from the first.

Beasteater appeared in finished form on the 2010 East of the Wall album, Ressentiment, after Biclops and East of the Wall collapsed into a single entity. That album was actually originally intended to be the Biclops debut and was recorded by Biclops' second incarnation, with guitarist/vocalist Kevin Conway replacing Dan Brownridge, who makes his only released vocal performance on this version of the song.

Further confusing the matter, there's a third version released on the second 2008 demo. There are some subtle differences in the guitar and vocal parts between all versions of the song. We kinda like this one due to the sweet dual-whammy-pedal action toward the end. That can be found along with all the other Biclops demos in The Graveyard:

Biclops — Beasteater (early 2008 demo)

We typically don't host stuff from bands as well-known as Oceansize, but this song (and the other demo that was simultaneously released, "Siberian Bullshit") are extremely hard to find, particularly at decent quality. The two demos were put out on Myspace prior to the band's third (and in our opinion, best) album, Frames, and were taken down shortly thereafter. We scoured the internets for quite a while to find a high quality copy of these songs, which despite their obscurity are among the band's best work. Enjoy!

Natt—Never Wanna Leave You

A long-lost outtake from the band that arguably got us into this scene. "Cleaning Up" was recorded for Growth of Alliance's 2001 Bug EP but never released. Reminiscent of S.C.I.E.N.C.E.-era Incubus, the song features eeire, funky ambient sections, and hard-hitting alt-metal chorus. Members of the band went on to play in Maxwell Adams, Diego's Umbrella, The Look, and Major Powers and the Lo-Fi Symphony.

Been way too long since we posted a Tuesday Track. This is one of the few Philence songs we have that's not full of pops from a scratched demo CD. Really wish this band had gotten more off the ground, super talented dudes with a unique sound that was somewhere in between Tool and early Incubus with the occasional power ballad thrown in (of which this is one). Members went on to play in Halfway, Brooks Was Here, Farewell Graceland, and other projects.
