After reading a moving article in the Valley News about the destruction in towns like Barre and Plainfield, I sat down with my guitar and fiddle to tell the story the way I know best. This song is for the resilient people of Vermont, who keep rising no matter how hard the waters come.

This tune tells the story of how I set out to build a better bow for fiddlers — something lighter, balanced near the tip, and responsive enough for trad and bluegrass players alike. The idea was born in Kilfenora, Ireland, after noticing how local fiddlers choked up on their sticks to get better control at the tip. Back home in Massachusetts, I worked with bow makers, my father (a cello builder), and a bow repair guy in Vermont to turn that idea into reality.

I chose bluegrass for this track because I’m American, I play bluegrass fiddle myself, and I wanted to showcase how a great bow should sound — not just feel. Driving rhythms, triplets, chops, clarity at the tip — it’s all in there. And yes: I recorded the fiddle part using one of my own Fiddler’s Bows.

This song is for the builders, the tinkerers, and every fiddler who’s ever wished their bow could do more.

In 2004, I planned a trip to attend the Musikmesse in Shanghai as part of my effort to find the right factory to produce my custom carbon fiber fiddlers’ bow. I’d been searching for a translator to help with business communication during the trip, and through colleagues in Asia, I was introduced to Emily.

She was a manager at Hanjin Shipping at the time — poised, sharp, and easy to talk to. We met over tea and started working together. Before long, the conversations moved from bow specs and trade terms to life, family, music, and everything in between. One meeting turned into many. Friendship turned into something more. That trip changed everything.

This song is about that time — about falling in love far from home, not in a rush, but with certainty. The melody draws gently from the spirit of the Butterfly Lovers and Chinese pentatonics, but the soul of it is American folk. The strings in this tune are the same strings that carried me from an idea… to a bow… to a partnership for life.
