As the number of people living with diabetes continues to climb, potentially reaching 750 million by 2045, scientists are urgently seeking better ways to manage the condition. Current medications can control symptoms but often fail to tackle the root causes of metabolic dysfunction and may cause side effects over time. This challenge has driven researchers to reexamine traditional medicines in search of untapped therapeutic compounds. One promising candidate is Nitraria roborowskii Kom.

Earth Matters: What, who lies beneath the dog park: Exploring Northampton’s Cemetery Hill, its legacy.  I wrote a song titled “Cemetery Hill”, inspired by the story of Cemetery Hill in Northampton — the dog-park atop a burial ground, layered with memory, soil, and quiet reverence.

A handful of residents came to see state transportation officials mark the beginning of an $8.6 million project to restore the town’s “Green Bridge,” a vital piece of infrastructure connecting communities to the west with Hampshire County, and a landmark in town since 1939.

Ancient DNA

About 2200 years ago, a wealthy Han soldier was entombed in a hillside grave on the frontier of the expanding Han Dynasty, in what is now western China. His tomb was filled with gold coins and emblazoned with ornate calligraphy. But what most interested Bao Yang at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and head of its Tree-Ring Laboratory was the wood of his coffin.

UMass Amherst student athletes are organizing a food drive throughout November to combat food insecurity, with donations supporting the Amherst Survival Center and the UMass Amherst campus pantry. 
The initiative began with students collecting food at a field hockey game and will continue at various sports events throughout the month. Donations can also be made at designated campus locations such as University Health Services and the Old Chapel.
