As he pushed his own cheek further into the warm, damp pavement of the alleyway, Frank found himself thinking of only one thing: that in the 42 years of his life, he had not once tasted the skin, flesh, or juice of a papaya. What an odd thought, he mused, as the pavement began to cut into his skin. The humid night air gradually corporealized into a mist and then to rain, water from the heavens finding its way into Frank’s half open mouth. He imagined, as he lay there willing himself to die, that the rain tasted like papayas. And papayas, of course, tasted like Lucy.
