"Akwaki," the brainchild of German production duo Ancient Astronauts, Ugandan maestro Otim Alpha, and the soulful vocals of Brazen Rule, marries the haunting melodies of the Adungu, a traditional indigenous instrument from Uganda, with a contemporary sonic landscape.

This extraordinary collaboration emerged during a fateful encounter when Dogu of Ancient Astronauts visited Uganda for a music festival in Gulu. Reuniting with Otim Alpha, whom he had met at the WOMEX music conference in Finland, the two kindred spirits quickly formed a friendship that would lead to musical magic.

When the Gulu festival took an unexpected turn for the worse, it was Otim Alpha who extended an invitation to Dogu, offering refuge and friendship. During his stay in Gulu, Dogu celebrated his birthday at Otim's bar, a testament to the genuine bond they had formed. Otim Alpha, an exceptional Adungu player known for his groundbreaking work on the Nyege Nyege label, and Dogu ventured into the studio during Dogu's stay to record the mesmerizing Adungu melodies that now grace "Akwaki."

To complete this sonic masterpiece, long-time friend and collaborator Brazen Rule lent his captivating vocals to the track. The result is "Akwaki," a harmonious blend of traditional indigenous instruments from East Africa seamlessly interwoven with a contemporary riddim and killer vocals. After paying homage to Africa with their 2021 release "ZIK ZAK" album, Ancient Astronauts once again turn their focus to the black continent, this time honing in on Uganda. Their latest offering, "Cypher Kabaka," is a collaborative effort with the indigenous Hip Hop crew BA Cypher Kabaka, hailing from Kampala, Uganda. This crew is dedicated to utilizing Hip Hop as a tool for positive social change and cultural empowerment.

The connection to BA Cypher Kabaka arose through DOGU's frequent travels to Uganda and the collaboration between his label, Switchstance Recordings, and the Ugandan partner label East African Records. All members of Cypher Kabaka were part of the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble and crossed paths with DOGU during the recording sessions for their album "Nyabingi Resurrection." This encounter sparked numerous freestyle sessions and laid the foundation for the idea of an album collaboration.

With one of the youngest populations globally, Uganda stands as one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, yet it remains among the world's poorest countries. The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges for the Ugandan people. Fortunately, with the support of a special Covid-19 grant for music collaborations from the German Goethe Institute, Ancient Astronauts and BA Cypher Kabaka secured funding for this album project.

But who exactly are BA Cypher Kabaka? Their Hip Hop movement took root in 2014, starting with 7 core members. This album highlights the talents of Spyda MC, Phitzo Kiganda, DXL Magezi, Niina MC, Natural Calamity MC, Taye Mwasiba, and Nsonga Diasy. Also known as The Cypher Kings, they comprise a growing collective of rappers, singers, Hip Hop practitioners, Graffiti artists, DJs, and Breakdancers. Together, they represent various indigenous cultures of Uganda and strive to instill pride in African heritage and identity among youth by blending Hip Hop culture and elements with local languages within an indigenous cultural context.

Their music features conscious lyrics with uplifting messages, delivered in various local languages such as Luganda, Lusoga, Lunyole, Lulamogi, Runyaruguru, Runyankole, and many other dialects. Their message centers on addressing the challenges faced by ghetto youth and sharing African philosophies on self-knowledge, virtuous leadership, self-love, self-development, and confident expression.

With a focus on initiating positive social change, BA Cypher Kabaka engages slum societies to create platforms that foster confidence in African identities among young people and inspire economic growth through creative arts.

Given Ancient Astronauts' commitment to conscious and positive messaging in their music, eschewing the capitalistic trappings of commercial Hip Hop, collaborating with BA Cypher Kabaka was a natural progression. Music as a catalyst for societal change, uniting people, instilling hope, and empowerment lies at the core of Hip Hop. The fusion of indigenous African rhythms with Ancient Astronauts' meticulous production and Cypher Kabaka's lyrical prowess renders this album a gem in African Hip Hop. Its rhythmic flow echoes the cultural history and groove of Mama Africa, specifically Uganda.

Originally intended as the title track for ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS 2009 debut album WE ARE TO ANSWER, the song did not make the final cut for the album and remained among the hidden musical treasures of KABANJAK´s Evergreen Studio. Then in 2015, the song was rediscovered and made a free download on ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS Soundcloud page. 

Since that day, the song has gained nearly 80,000 plays on Soundcloud, inspiring Switchstance Recordings to officially release the song on all digital platforms worldwide. 

WE ARE TO ANSWER is not only a rediscovered song by ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, but a stellar example of their trippy trademark style of dope beats mixed with deep organic grooves. A stripped-down melody combined with heavy drums and a groovy bassline build the foundation of this song and take listeners on an interplanetary space voyage with these two musical Astronauts. And when the beautiful guitar melody kicks in at the end, listeners are fully propelled into the cosmos of outernational dopeness by the Astronauts known as KABANJAK and DOGU.

“I'm Simone Guizzo, aka Two Eyes One Truth. I am a drummer and my music for me is a tool to communicate with myself. My expressive pillar is rhythm. Each of my pieces stems from the need to give concrete form to an image, a memory or a past emotion. I like to use an ambiguous and often contradictory language to do so, which is an expression of a heterogeneous background. This includes many experiences in different bands, in the most disparate genres (from metal to pop), before moving on to electronics. 

My main source of inspiration is the London electronic music and breakbeat scene, in particular some Ninja Tune artists such as Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Tycho, Machinedrum, Lapalux, but also Burial, Jon Hopkins, Bicep, Ivy Lab. I like to be influenced by very different kinds of music, often seeking for dark shades and atmospheric sound design, as well as overpowering grooves or sophisticated rhythms.

Christmas time is known to be the merry time of the year, but reality proves that there is as well a dark side of Christmas. Individual tragedies can add sad moments to these “holy” days and stay mostly undiscussed. Kabanjak´s “Holy Night” aims to give this sadness and desperation a musical voice.

The original “Holy Night” is known to be an international Christmas classic. A song that brings out childhood memories in people hearing it. Full of positivity and hope. But the reality of Christmas is not always like that. Everyone can find examples for themselves.
Kabanjak reworked the theme of the song in his very own way by adding a dark and psychedelic groove to it. He turned the happy major song into a dark and tragic minor version.

Untold is the soundtrack to a psychedelic blaxploitation film that was too crazy to release. If there is a discernible style here, it is the limitless, post-genre exploration of the restless musical adventurer, whose range is so broad as to encompass itself as it crosses the world repeatedly in a single track. Each song has a core idea - a solid groove and an overarching vibe - but beyond that, the only constant is change – of instrument, mood and era. Having produced film soundtracks for most of his professional career, Fixed Error aka James Orr brings a narrative approach to arrangement, in each track and across the album as a whole. We get the sense that we are hearing a story unfold, with each scene having its own sonic arc.

Kicking off with the funked-up slap-bass car-chase of Out We Go, we are immediately thrown into a world of familiar sounds which are blended and mismatched in the most deliciously unpredictable way. An Asiatic twanging leads into a bombardment of bold brass, soaring strings, DJ scratching and coruscating synth stabs. As the pace subsides, the heavy rhythm gives way to melodic, wistful moments, before plunging us back onto the tarmac with a screech of horns and thud of pumping bass.

After this swaggering, high-octane introduction, we enter the sultry world of Ugandan soul singer MoRoots, crooning a lament to her lost love: Rain On My Skin. As the song develops, an offbeat piano stab and lazy horns turn this into a blunted jazzy Dub tune, as if Shirley Bassey had wandered into a Reggae bar. From track to track, we move into alternative musical universes, from the up-tempo, banging Funk breaks of Wax Lyrical, Flute Fight and Waiting For Time, to the screwed-down, blissful bass vibrations of Flowerchild and Ride The Line, to the psychedelic Disco that is Busted Chops, to the Dub-wise sound system vibes of Salutations. Just as we think we are getting a handle on the flavour of the moment, an incongruous instrument interrupts our reverie (check the rogue accordion on White Label), or Kagayi Ngobi when he captivates us on They Do Not Listen by vividly portraying the impoverished residents of the slums, illustrating their growing frustration with politicians who make empty promises and neglect the marginalized inhabitants of the ghettos.

Fixed Error gathered the material for this album over years, from a bewildering array of samples and live takes from his long career as a professional studio engineer. This is not to say that the overall effect is scattershot or random; Untold is a tightly-formed, polished album whose coherence lies in a deep understanding of how all the diverse elements work and how they can complement each other in new and unexpected ways. Densely-layered, each composition has orchestral levels of complexity, balancing and interweaving a myriad of instruments.

Together, they represent various indigenous cultures of Uganda and strive to instill pride in African heritage and identity among youth by blending Hip Hop culture and elements with local languages within an indigenous cultural context.

Their music features conscious lyrics with uplifting messages, delivered in various local languages such as Luganda, Lusoga, Lunyole, Lulamogi, Runyaruguru, Runyankole, and many other dialects. Their message centers on addressing the challenges faced by ghetto youth and sharing African philosophies on self-knowledge, virtuous leadership, self-love, self-development, and confident expression.

With a focus on initiating positive social change, BA Cypher Kabaka engages slum societies to create platforms that foster confidence in African identities among young people and inspire economic growth through creative arts.

Given Ancient Astronauts' commitment to conscious and positive messaging in their music, eschewing the capitalistic trappings of commercial Hip Hop, collaborating with BA Cypher Kabaka was a natural progression. Music as a catalyst for societal change, uniting people, instilling hope, and empowerment lies at the core of Hip Hop. The fusion of indigenous African rhythms with Ancient Astronauts' meticulous production and Cypher Kabaka's lyrical prowess renders this album a gem in African Hip Hop. Kabanjak - The Dooza Tapes Vol. 1 (snippet mix)

Kabanjak has been exploring genres of all sorts of design that pull from hip-hop, electronica, reggae and soul to create some of the most forward-thinking music to come out of Europe. Stepping out this time as a one-man band, the musician has orchestrated a new work which employs all of his talents as a producer of up-to-the-minute sounds.  
 
Kabanjak’s latest solo venture, Dubs and Downs, strips his collective influences down to the lone elements of reggae and dub. Largely instrumental, the EP opts for tempos that are never disturbed beyond the fuss of a soft, tropical breeze. Dubs and Downs evokes the gritty living of coastal life and takes its cues from reggae’s most diverse spectrum; everyone from Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby to Augusto Pablo and Sugar Minott can be referenced.  
 
With only a spare seven tracks, Kabanjak manages some truly sultry gems. “Home Again” (featuring Til Schneider), an undulating groove of equatorial heat, is accented with horns that are drawn across the number with painterly, breezy streaks. “Everything is Alright”, which features on the EP in three different versions (each one a slight variation in groove and melody), adds chunk and heft to its rhythm, the hollows of its groove filling up with the resonance of deep bass. 
 
Keeping the corners of these structured rhythms stone-tight, Kabanjak allows ample room for a flush of blue melody to expand within the perimeters. Some of reggae’s most pronounced elements are found here (prominent use of the melodica features throughout) and Dubs and Downs employs a judicious mix of one-drop and steppers, styles given fresh designs through the producer’s impressive arrangements. 
 

 
 
On the EP’s most strident cut, “Boomdraw”, guest Amlak Redsqaure offers a honeyed toasting that slightly roughens the otherwise smooth flow of this organic Reggae. The same number appears yet again as an instrumental to allow a closer listen at all the smaller nuances that go unnoticed behind Redsqaure’s cavernous vocal. 
 
It is perhaps opening number “More Love” which sums up this experience of unperturbed, island living, the untouchable calm in both the waves of the sea and sand. Echoing with the colours of twilight, the number perfectly sets the bar high for club-driven reggae, and is delivered by a well-known name in underground music culture.

This is the snippet mix for the Amlak Redsquare´s single "Judges (Kabanjak Remix", which is out on the 4th of August 2017.

Jamaican singer Amlak Redsquare, the nephew of legendary Dancehall artist Spragga Benz, is an upcoming energetic Reggae artist with a strong political dissent in his music. 

After performing on the same Reggae event in Cologne as Switchstance Recordings head Tom Strauch that meeting resulted in a vocal feature on Kabanjak´s latest release „Dubs & Downs“. However that collaboration was just the start for more to come. 

While having his solo album „Book Of Judges“ out making heavy rotation in the international Reggae world Amlak asked Kabanjak to do a remix for his title track „Judges“. That one come out so strong that it was an easy decision to give it it´s own proper release. 

Being big time Reggae heads we here at Switchstance Recordings are happy to present this uplifting but same time socially critical artist who brings back the positive power and guidance of the original Rastafari movement. Welcome to the world of Amlak Redsquare!

The serious problem of police brutality in the USA, mostly against people of colour, did not disappear but it reached sad peaks in history, reminiscing of the old days of slavery and open racism. With the current president in power it looks as if this won't change in the near future. 

This song is dedicated to all those innocent people who died through the hands of those who are there 'to serve and protect'.

MUITO KABALLA is a one-man-band artist and multi-instrumentalist from Cologne / Germany and the latest signing to Switchstance Recordings. By playing all instruments (drums, bongo, bass, guitar, keys, flute, sax and trumpet) himself and layering them with a loop station MUITO KABALLA creates an infectious groove full of Afrobeat, Funk and Jazz.

In the beginning of 2017 he began street performances in Cologne and soon other cities in Germany and Austria followed. With his project, called Guerilla Soundbombing, he took his music right to the street, wherever and whenever he wanted. He soon gained recognition for that and also started to play gigs and concerts. In his music he pushes the boundaries between different genres but somehow always returns to that groovy Funk and Afrobeat feeling that feels like home to him.

In 2018 he recorded his first album EVERYTHING IS BROKE that will be released on Switchstance Recordings on the 10th of May, 2019.

The Remix of LUGAR AO SOL was produced by Afrikan Roots, an Afro House live band from South Africa, who just signed to Switchstance Recordings for their upcoming KORA EP and a full album.

Production duo ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS have announced the release of their latest single, ‘Tebamanyi feat. MoRoots’ on the 6th of November. The single is taken from their groundbreaking Afro-European album ZIK ZAK, which will be released on the 22nd of January 2021 via Switchstance Recordings and features a variety of rising African musicians. The album was preceded by the noteworthy Kampala Fire EP and the single Ziinga Zanram. 

Ugandan born and London based MoRoots is a fast-rising singer, songwriter, composer, saxophonist, classical pianist who is currently making waves across both continents. The songstress has been supported by several publications including Bella Naija, New Vision, The New Times, Chimp Reports, The Observer and Sofar Sounds.

ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS find inspiration in a variety of styles, including the likes of Madlib, Apollo Brown, Clutchy Hopkins, RJD2, King Tubby, Lee Perry, Dubmatix, Stone Love, J Dilla, Augustus Pablo, Midnite, DJ Premiere, Pete Rock and 9th Wonder. However, ‘Tebamanyi feat. MoRoots’ sits closer to the likes of the production stylings of Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, the haunting string work of Portishead and Quakers (Katalyst) the while the vocals call to mind the powerful likes of Amy Winehouse and Mary J. Blige. 

Radiating with strong feminism and bold vocals, ‘Tebamanyi feat. MoRoots’ is made with deep grooves that keep the listener entranced. An “in-your-face, I-don’t-care”  attitude opens the single. However, instead of allowing this rhythm to dominate the single, there is a deep sense of refinement and precision within the vocals that is only further accentuated by the production stylings of ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS.

"Switchstance" is taken from the culture of boardsports, meaning the skill used to change the stance (easily) by switching one's foot position. The stance in freestyle Snowboarding or Skateboarding, is either riding in "regular" (left foot forward) or "goofy" (right foot forward) position. This identifies a really skilled rider and opens up a whole new world of trick combinations.

The label's creed and therefore the style of its producers and DJs is to have ultimate freedom, whether in their musical movements or in "switching" between various styles.
