Lapo & Ago, alongside the rest of the mighty Numa Crew, are responsible for some of the most crucial, addictive, and classic 140 material in the history of the scene. Tunes on Moonshine and Killa Sound such as "Youth Pon The Corner," “Everytime" (as Numa Crew), "Dreadlock Blues," and Ago’s "So Mi Seh" on Innamind are stone cold classics that haven’t left many selectors’ boxes since release. After a long pandemic-enforced hiatus, ZamZam returns with our 83rd release, offering two more future classics for the global dubwise sound system massive, on 7" vinyl- the original sound system format. 

Coming in hard with kick, melodica, and echo chamber vocal fragments, “Spirals and Pyramids” drags us into the dance with stabs and a
rubbery, buoyant bassline that’s hard yet playful, reveling in the elemental joys of the dance, community vibes spread through sound system principles: bass, reverb space, haunting melodics, and masterful frequency control. Upful steppers is the vibe, just in time for a summer that we hope brings a return to in-person sessions wherever you are. 

The wholesome pleasures of the A side do nothing to prepare us for the massive weight and sound-killing heaviness of the flip, “Shot The King!” From the very first dungeon tone and bone-dry high hat holding time, the mood is pure dread and the die is cast for war. Calling out soundboys and weakheart with sound tape declaration and a thick miasma of smoky reverb, this is a tune to test sounds and bring dancers to their knees. Staccato kicks and swarming sub drive the riddim, augmented by lasers, minimal percussion, and a feeling of elated claustrophobia that only proponents of this music understand.

On the 30th December 2013, myself and DJ Stryda met up and put this mix together. For those that aren't familiar with Stryda, he has been a stalwart veteran in the roots scene in Bristol for many years and is half of the internationally acclaimed group, Dubkasm [https://soundcloud.com/dubkasm]

The aim of this mix, much like the other recent roots mixes I have put together, was to piece together and showcase an array of sound and styles that have influenced the music that both me and Stryda create, records that have helped form a foundation for us as musicians and selectors. 

I chose some favourites of mine from Stryda's vast record collection and we started recording. A journey in to dub.

One of soundsystem culture's most fascinating elements is sound clash for sure. Comrades join a convention, presenting freshest treasures in friendly competition. 
Imagine this single as a peaceful battle between two heavy weight produbbers of the bass music scene. One like long-term 45seven hero Beam Up meets Bukkha on the other side debuting on this junglist's sunday paper of an imprint, shining in all his honour of his latest signings on System, Moonshine and Lion Charge. Them meet up to deliver two vibrating bombs of dubwise halftime Jungle bassiness: [...]

One Shot comes in less flooded and a 'lil cooler. But don't get taken by its ease, the riddim is heavy and will boil up any massive. Horns dubbed with smooth pressure, spiced by melodica blops, a massive strolling bassline and subtle percussions keeping listeners in suspension. Eyes up!

As a part of Bristol's Young Echo collective, Ishan Sound has helped sculpt an array of music that gleefully exists on the more experimental edges of music, but his solo output under the Ishan Sound name has quite a specific and direct intention. Piled full of low end then riddled with interesting melodies and chunky percussive elements his music belongs in dark rooms, played loud on muscled soundsystems that can replicate the dense sense of dread that he writes and captures. With an upcoming appearance here at the Outlook Festival launch party on the 11th March we hooked up to discuss his background and the genesis of his dubstep influenced music (some of which you can most likely hear in this mixtape he's kindly put together for us).
