Kicking off the New Year by announcing: "Nube Diamante," a collaborative single EP featuring an insane talent combination between Andrea Lacoste Mystery Affair and Azaria. The release is set to drop in the end of January 2023 and the original is sure to be a floor banger with a spectrum of sounds and lyrics that unfold like an exciting experience.

"Nube Diamante" showcases instrospective personals with peak time elements, a piece reinterpreted via outstanding remixes from some of the hottest names among the indie dance / dark disco platforms. CHAS remix is a tropical trance with latin  touch, powerful bass and cowbells, then straight from Guatemala, Fabio Me Llaman Soltero brings to the table a  neo dpop psychedelic pachanga driven by antagonic grooves. This EP also includes a remix from Ivan De La Rouch, head honcho at Logical Records, a special collaboration from the Spanish artist Parissior and a bonus vocal rework from, Mastered at [Rec Division Studios] and Artwork by Lebollet

Phew! Many Top 10 & top-notch stuff in his prolific and eclectic catalogue, you should check it out on your favourite on-line retailer in case you are not familiar with his work. Thank us later!

For his forthcoming endeavour, “Synthetic Glory”, coming soon on the competent Paisley Dark, J.R. cooked two nervous originals and gathered a proper line-up of superstars for the remix duties: Mindbender (BANDCAMP003), Rude Audio, Hunterbräu, Högt I Tak (SXDNS179), and Man2.0 (SXDNS081/FREEDL002) have definitely raised the bar of the release with their insightful interpretations.

Despite the high quality of the remixes, we opted to go with the title track for our review. Intense and robust, “Synthetic Glory” marks with grandeur this new phase of James’ work in which he explores his EBM, Industrial, and Cold Wave influences to deliver obscurity-meets-groove cuts. If not suitable for pool parties, no problem: foggy and darkened dance floors it is!

PREMIERE467 // James Rod - Synthetic Glory

“Feel The Love” by Blavatsky & Tolley is coming soon on When Disco Goes Wrong. Old-time ravers, still hot in their game, couldn’t choose a better outlet to host their freshest creation. Curated by Mårten “Mindbender” Attling (BANDCAMP003) and Janne “Högt I Tak” Berglund (SXDNS179), two representatives of the early days of the Swedish underground music scene, the imprint is definitely the place to be for the fans of the good ol’ times out there.

Besides the compelling original, the EP also brings three remixes made with love by the label bosses themselves and a special guest, Adrián Calystarr, for his third appearance on WDGR. The latter, the chosen one to review/premiere.

With well-received pieces published on Golden Soul, Espacio Cielo, and When Disco Goes Wrong itself, the Spanish producer likes darkness mixed with psychedelia, an interesting combination that has drawn attention amid the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. He repeats the formula, turboing it with shards of Trance, for his version of Blavatsky & Tolley’s single, delivering a deep and progressive interpretation.

PREMIERE : John Parsley - Summer Disfunction (Self Release)

With appearances on NEIN, Espacio Cielo, and Good For You, Jay-Son, honcho of Hot Dog Recordings, debuts on the cool British label Paisley Dark with the single “Spirit Dance”, a bouncing and groovy Indie Dance cut that received thumbs-up interpretations from Högt I Tak (SXDNS179), Hunterbräu & TakeMeThere, Keith Forrester, and The Machine Soul, who spared no efforts to bring the theme to their very own turfs in order to depict their characteristic sonorities without extremely distorting the main aura of the original.

The remix we chose to review/premiere comes from the criminal mastermind of our Swedish friend Janne Berglund aka Högt I Tak, co-owner of the also cool outlet When Disco Goes Wrong but with entrances in many other imprints such as Emerald & Doreen, ESTHÉTIQUE, Nuff Music, Ekord, and Espacio Cielo, just to name a few.

For his fourth stroll on Paisley, Janne soaked “Spirit Dance” in acid – something already expected by those who are familiar with his work – and delivered a powerful and intricate version that is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the release, in our humble opinion.

PREMIERE520 // Jay-Son - Spirit Dance (Högt I Tak Remix)

Some labels have their names carved in marble when it comes to their importance to the origins of the modern Indie Dance/Nu Disco scene. Before such denominations even existed, Emerald & Doreen had already put out dozens of releases featuring such genres. And the German imprint simply cannot get enough of it by keeping a solid string of deliveries and maintaining its position among the most vital outlets of the game.

One of its freshest episodes is coming super hot, by the way: “Odyssey-10” is the new endeavour by the London-based duo Beyond The Struttosphere (SXDNS263), who invited Miss Zagato to collaborate in one of the tracks and none other than Vongold (SXDNS236), Ivan Fabra (SXDNS107), and Badknife for the remix duties.

With appearances on Disc-o-lypso, Gouranga, Mélopée, Astrolead, and IDWT, the Struttosphere lads are addicted to handing out high-quality cosmic-embedded gems, always featuring a lofty standard production technique allied with intense and fierce creativity – little wonder they have conquered so many hearts since their debut in 2019. 

Ivan Fabra, the mastermind behind the remix we were solicited to review/premiere, needs no introduction but let’s say a few words about him for those still not familiar with his career: The acclaimed Spanish virtuoso is one of those boogie heads who managed to keep the fire burning in nowadays’ times by delivering not only stunning Disco edits but also spot-on retro-soaked originals. The result can be seen on Boite Music, Spa In Disco, Sprechen, Nang, Paradiso, Love Attack, Internasjonal, N I G H T N O I S E, and E&D itself, just to name a few.

For his take on “Satellite Cities”, Master Fabra went nuts with the progressiveness and deepness. A leftfield aura comes forward and pairs perfectly with the soft guitar-like riffs and frolic laser FXs. The magnificent vocals by Miss Zagato cannot go unmentioned. They undoubtedly bring the theme to another level.

The title track is inspired by progressive trance and fuses a driving chug bassline with a hypnotic 303 sequence, distorted techno stabs and a trifecta of meandering arpeggiators, creating a wormhole through space and time. Thunderous power chords and nuanced percussion layering guide the track towards a cosmic void, echoing with mind-bending vocal samples from the cult sci-fi film ’12 Monkeys’, before a high-voltage crescendo transports you to the Planet Ogo. Remixes are provided by two masters of the scene: South Korean cosmic disco royalty, Shubostar, applies her trademark sound, introducing playful melodies, kinetic arps and retro-futuristic synths that elevate its seismic breakdown into outer space. Spanish new wave maestro, K-Effect, provides a more psychedelic contribution, weaving in tripped-out FX, clinical drum arrangements and low-end synths that propel the tune towards its ominous conclusion.
‘Cosmic Stuntman’, the second offering, is as intrepid as its name suggests. The first half is a minimalist soundscape defined by crunchy guitar riffs, energetic tambourines, cowbells and an array of spacey FX, before the second opens in throttle with a ferocious mid-range bass, cutting snares and cosmic pads that build in magnitude as the track reaches its spellbinding climax. Dionigi, alumnus of Italian cosmic sound movement, remixes the track into a low-slung chugger complete with glitchy vocoders that resemble scrambled UFO transmissions.
The EP concludes with bonus remixes of BTS back catalogue hits. ‘Replicants’, originally released on Mélopée Records in 2021, is resurrected by Berlin-based electronic rock n’ roll band, Tegel Boys, who transform the track into a krautrock-infused kosmiche space odyssey perfect for tuned-in psychic travellers. Mexican dark wave legend, Rigopolar, follows with a tranced-out remix bolstered by robotic arpeggiators and mechanical guitars that propel you to Mach-10. Completing the package are reinterpretations of ‘Storming Heaven’ which first appeared on Emerald & Doreen Recordings and pays homage to Jay Steven’s eponymous book on LSD and the American dream. Argentinian dark disco producer and member of Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Soundsystem, Julian Sanza, cranks up the funk and reconfigures the track into a Balearic sunset trip. UK godfather of chug Rich Lane isolates the original’s soaring guitar solo and reimagines the track into a mesmerising downtempo chugger tinged with psychedelia.

BIO:
Beyond The Struttopshere is a sonic collaboration between two DJs channelling their considerable musical production experience and boundless love of cosmic chugging dark disco. Their debut EP ‘New Frontier’ was released on Discolypso Recordings in 2020 and found much acclaim among Andrew Weatherall and Sean Johnston’s A Love From Outer Space online fraternity, also appearing on Juan Mclean’s (DFA Records) contribution to Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space mix series. Beyond The Struttosphere’s music is now making sonic reverberations around the globe, hitting the dancefloors of Burning Man, House of Yes NYC, ADE, Fusion Festival, Sisyphos Berlin, and notching up remixes from notable legends of the scene including Shubostar, Rebolledo, Rigopolar, Tegel Boys, Vongold, Badknife, James Rod, Julian Sanza, Roliva, K-Effect and Mufti. The cosmonauts are frequently immersed in the studio, with live guitar now a mainstay of their productions. Their trademark sound combines fat chugging basslines with reverbed guitar riffs, syncopated arpeggiators, cosmic synths, vintage vocal samples, Italo drum fills and psychedelic 303 sequences.
