Marcus’ DJ-sets could best be described as a retrospective journey into the future, taking on a lot of inspiration from the 80s and 90s with a strong focus on Italo, Dark Disco and EBM, as well as Synthwave and a hint of Trance.

New Beat Situation

It tended to be the things you were told to stay away from that you ended up being most drawn to. They were seemingly out of reach, untouchable and forbidden - and usually for good reason. But most of the time it had the averse effect, if you weren't allowed them you only wanted them more, regardless of the consequences. It came with an element of challenge; a challenge most of us would rise to, especially when the rewards were too good to pass up...

Bodywork have been throwing parties in Bristol for almost a decade. Having put their stamp on the South Western city with a whopping 90-odd shindigs, the crew behind it are now immortalising some of the sounds and names you can hear gracing their events with a six-track various artists EP. For this inaugural release, Flexes 001, Bodywork spotlight some of their favourite up-and-coming producers, including Futureboogie producer Chez De Milo and Studio 89 resident David J Bull, the latter of whom explores his love of EBM and New Beat on our pick 'Datura'.

Jonas Grew up in Mažeikiai, an industrial town in Lithuania, famous for its oil industry, which apparently is a very proper soil for electronic music, he quickly started showcasing his personal selections in various festivals and venues all over Lithuania.

Step by step, Calli consolidated himself as a key performer in the Lithuanian techno scene - Continuing his musical pilgrimage by playing in many clubs and festivals around his home country, he matured and gained further experience, until he was confident enough to start his own production. His talent was quickly noticed by Mantas T., the founder of a Lithuanian net-label Partyzanai, and in 2011 Jonas proudly presented his first EP ‘Acid from Nowhere’, which quickly gained recognition in the techno audience.

Later on the producer’s new love, Dark Disco-inspired spacious sound, started to beg for a new artistic alias. John Patter was born and the alter ego was a good enough reason to invest on new studio equipment and broaden his abilities of production. Launched with remixes for ba., a Lithuanian post-punk prodigy, and Latvian producers Esoniq & Negorod, he soon began laying some serious studio work and came up with his debut EP „Space Race“ in 2015, released in Ninefont.

After several releases on Argentinean’s label, John continues on his sound journey and thus a new release is born on the Spanish label Shara Music called “Noche Santos”. Before this EP, Jonas did a great remix for Tkuz track “Electrico” which was released on the same label.

During the successful his own managed Darkroom event series in one of the best Lithuanian night club Kablys, he met many great artists from abroad and his sound was moved forward as well. The inspiration leaded him to new dimensions of EBM and mixtures of Dark Disco with Broken Beats. Then, in 2019 a new release was born on Esthetique’s sub label MOIL called “Trois Larmes”. Later, Jonas continued his musical journey with inspiring new tracks, which were released on Rotten City Files and Melomana Records.

Onur Özman returns to Sum Over Histories with Panopticon, a 4-track EP exploring the illusion of freedom in modern life. 

Drawing on the panopticon’s concept of unseen surveillance, the release blends deep, atmospheric sound design with a clear conceptual focus, moving from hidden confinement toward a sense of release. The EP also features a breaks-heavy UK bass remix by Odd Occasion, adding an intense and powerful dimension to Özman’s original work.
