This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

16 isn't a particularly special number. But this is a particularly special installment! From Reykjavik, Iceland - the world's northernmost capital dubbed as "The Worlds Biggest Little Metropolis" as the city holds two thirds of the Icelandic population - we present Exos (real name Arnviður Snorrason), a unique and creative techno innovator who has become well-known for his uber-quality releases on respected labels such as Force Inc. Music Works, Mosaic, Symbolism and also Thule Records, a cult-status Icelandic techno label that has been recently reincarnated under a new name, Strobelight Network.

This 75-minute vinyl mix is the product of a great deal of care and attention. As per usual we asked Exos to dig deep in his collection to come up with something truly special and what we have here is a treasure trove of techno gems and lost oddities that are deep, dubby, blissful, melodic, bold, strange and at times completely "far-out" (Iceland style!). We are pleased that he has paid some homage to the music that has originated from his Icelandic peers as we have records here from his friends Yagya (Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson), Thor (Þórhallur Skúlason) and also his father who is known as Octal (Snorri Arnarson).

As we were digging through the submitted tracklist to normalise it to our usual format and resolution of detail, we realised that the collective value of all these records is in the region of £1000+ on current discogs prices. But musically, end-product-wise, this mix is much greater than the sum of it's parts thanks to the wizardry of Exos on the decks and we are glad to deliver something priceless that you can download for free. These incredible records... they are in good hands already.

"In my life, I am experiencing a touch of timeless awareness. The time is speeding up, I am confusing time and there is something happening to the "Now" as I understand it. That is something that I try to explain in this mix. Music from different directions from here to there. It's also a Spring-time soundtrack for my favorite time of the year when April, May and June hits their magic with sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.

As I often play these records alongside newer releases, I realized most of those classics were more than 25 years old, I thought of compiling them together to show where dub tech comes from and how timeless most of these tracks are...Take a record like Round Four, discovered for a lot of people like me on Daniel Bell's mix (2000) The button down mind of Daniel Bell. More than 25 years onwards, you can look at a record like this, alongside Baby Ford and early Ricardo Villalobos as the blueprint for modern minimal and dubby electronic music, but that would imply that those genres later improved upon the overall formula. In reality, few got even close to as good as this. The origins of a genre is often more important than newer releases. Vainqueur is René Löwe famous from the Chain Reaction label. The B.C. track isn't Basic channel but a moniker which consists of Robert Leiner (Visions of the past) and Cisco Ferreira (The Advent). G-Man, whose productions were way ahead of its time on Force inc is Gez Varley from L.F.O. one half of it (other was Mark Bell), Quadrant is another moniker used by Basic channel, the EP was released in 1993 on R&S records the legendary Belgium label, and later repressed on Carl Craig's Planet E.

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

Chambre Froide #20 : Tribute to Echospace Galaxy // Frission Radio

Widely considered one of the hallmarks of dub-infused electronic music, as well as an endless resource of inspiration and awe for generations of electronic music artists and enthusiasts, Vibrant Forms II by @Fluxion is now being reissued by Subwax Bcn. Originally released on Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's revered Chain Reaction label in 2000, the many calls for a reissue of this cavernous masterpiece has finally been answered by the Barcelona imprint.

Fluxion's Vibrant Forms II was his second album on Chain Reaction and it successfully managed to broaden the space and the environment of the compositions, as well as develop further his technique of textural sonic blend.

Bio:
Since 1998 Konstantinos Soublis aka Fluxion has been releasing music on a variety of labels, Chain Reaction, Echocord, Type, and others). Fluxion's output has been referred to as a cornerstone in the Techno/Dub/Ambient genders. His approach of liquid live-organic productions, incorporating techno, dub, ambient, sound design, has formed a signature sound that is point of reference for many producers. His textural environment shifts and harmonic blends, alongside strong rhythmical bursts, create an intelligent motion-picture landscape. Hidden melodic elements alongside sound manipulation form a narrative that everything happens in a smooth transition, like melting one element onto the other to form one big picture. Under the Fluxion moniker K. Soublis has released 7 albums and many ep’s.
