The project: "An exercise in when a sound ends."

A long-fading sound, the same notes played, each time held until you’re certain you can no longer hear it. Then repeat (with feeling). Record a live performance.

I spent an hour or two on sound design. What I came up with was a bit convoluted... but worked: Yamaha CS2x Wurlitzer > Catlalinbread Callisto > Line6 POD (set on a basic delay) > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run > Lexicon MPX 100. 

My goal was to create a sound where bits and pieces of other notes and overtones stuck out at different times, one that would "drift off" the decay to highlight the silences in between, and a sound that was dynamically sensitive to the performance. A couple of key elements to achieving this was bringing in the natural(ish) resonance of the Lexicon chamber reverb, and lengthening the decay on the Wurli sound so that holding the chord a tiny bit longer bloomed the lower register.

Listening to each chord fall into silence was a good exercise in mindfulness. I had to tamp down my instinct to find a tempo a time or two.

There are a couple of faults in the recording - an over or two crackled in the Lexicon, and I tripped over a note towards the end - but, hey: live recording!
