It was inspired by a documentary about human trafficking, & thoughts about how so many people are stuck, & that I wish I could help bring them all home, since when people go down these roads, it can seem impossible to make their way back.  Not trying to trivialize that they should think it's easy, but simply offering the opened invitation for them… to "Come on Home"…

Everyone has their problems, their "leaky boat". Pressures mount, & sometimes there's a wonder whether we will get through.  But this song reminds us that we CAN get through, on our own steam ("fixing our leaky boat"), & with the help of others ("mending the broken bits" together); & that the more we relax into things, the better we will get through them. :) It was inspired during the pandemic, but rings true always. :)

This song was written last year in response to horrible things happening in our world, due to hatred, often generated unnecessarily by cowardly fears.  I'm posting it now because of more news of horrific things happening in our world, in particular, in Canada, where graves of hundreds of indigenous children have been found, on multiple sites of former Residential Schools, an atrocious & inhumane attempt at cultural genocide, previously & shamefully imposed on the Indigenous community for decades.

With its lullaby-like rocking style Travis Picking acoustic guitar, the song wraps us in a musical blanket of comfort, & lets us know we can overcome our adversity.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with big problems, & avoid working towards a solution because they’re so massive that 1 action does not feel like it will make a much difference.  But that’s not true, especially where the planet crisis is concerned, since as most people know, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!!  So the MORE we do, SOONER, & IN COLLABORATION with others, the BETTER it will be!  So PLEASE take that action, TODAY!! :)
Start that new pattern NOW!  Look into the face of a loved one, or a child, & think how your actions today will be a gift to them tomorrow.  Many of us may not be around to see the ugly long-term effects the climate crisis will have on the planet.  But our children may, & our grand children surely will!  So please join me in making changes TODAY, if not for them, then for our own legacy, so that we can be the generation that turned things around in a BIG way!!!
ABOUT THE SONG:  “Hospice of Humanity” is a classic folk song.  I ponder a lot.  I ponder about people, places, things & ideals I care about.  The environment, & our planet, the place we call home, is one of those things.  This song was born from one such pondering, & how small I felt in front of this big climate crisis problem.  It may have been around the time I learned about the horrifying statistic of “90 yrs of farmable soil left”!
While I do take many positive climate actions in my day-to-day life, I know I can do more, & I wanted to do more on a larger scale for the climate cause.    I also wanted to encourage collaboration too.  So I decided to write another environmental song.   However, unlike one of my other ones which is more directing, this song takes a more philosophical approach, & asks us to move our minds to the future & look back retrospectively.  Would we like what we see?  Or would we look with regret upon what we’ve done when imagining ourselves in the future, looking back at how we’ve lived??  I can’t help but think we’d feel regret.
So I hope my song will provoke some of that feeling of regret that we’d certainly feel if we were fast-forwarded to a dismal ecological future, to create a CATALYST TO CALL US TO ACTION!!! … that the retrospective thought of knowing we could have done things differently for a BETTER OUTCOME, would make us act differently today… even just a little, & CHANGE OUR LIFESTYLE, maybe even sacrificing something, for the greater good!!… so that we are not forced to be caught in the “Hospice of Humanity”!  Anyone who has spent time around end of life hospice care knows how sad that is.  So let’s not go there with our planet!  Let’s start TODAY to make, or continue making, lifestyle changes to move us towards a better, healthier planet & life for EVERYONE tomorrow!! :)

Quiet, contemplative acoustic folk song written after I read about a random, gruesome murder in the news a few years ago.  Many were killed & there was a partial account by one of the victims who survived.  Stories like this, & many that are worse, make it hard to follow current news.  Right after, I turned on a song that soothes my soul, to make myself feel better I suppose.  I revelled in how music can provide such a comforting blanket.  And it occurred to me that sometimes I write my own songs for the same reason, to soothe myself or others hopefully.  This song was born from those thoughts, of how we often turn to music for comfort.  It does not solve the problem; does not undo the events that caused the news story; it does not even provide solutions for moving forward better.  But it does help soothe the soul, the heart & the mind, at least for a little while, & hopefully, provide a backdrop upon which we can ponder better, more peaceful & violent-free ways forward.

What would you do if you only had “One Year to Live”?  Would you give, or take?  Stay or go?  Forgive & forget, or continue to hold that grudge?  If you only have “One Year to Live”, if your time is finite, what things would YOU do???
I like to think a lot of us would choose the high ground: to let go the grudges & mend relationships.  That may not be true of everyone, but surely, we’d determine quickly what’s important to us, so we could focus on those people, places, causes & things we love, as much as possible, with the limited time we have left.
I ask this question now since it’s the start of a new year.  Many have made (or perhaps are still making) plans or resolutions, & trying to follow through on them; like eating better, sleeping more, going to the gym, etc.  But how many of the changes we try to make, relate to our core needs & desires, those we’d have if we learned we only had “One Year to Live”?  
Sometimes it’s hard to think on this level, & most lifestyles don’t allow time to ponder big questions.  So as you start your new year, I offer this song as a prompt to help get you thinking (or perhaps keep you thinking) in terms of fundamentals, & what’s truly important to YOU at the core of your being: the people, places, causes &/or other things to which you would gravitate, if your remaining physical time on this earth was short.
As a last note, I want to address the photo I selected to go with this song demo & post.  Do you think it’s too frivolous or joyous to suit a song called “One Year to Live”?  To be honest, I was originally looking through my photographs for something serene, certainly more serious, or of an epic nature even, like a mountain, since the notion of being faced with only “One Year to Live”, is a big, heavy topic.  But then this photo jumped out at me, & I thought: “If someone only had ‘One Year to Live’, I would wish upon them the joyous heart of a child, who exists ignorant of the ills & stresses of the world, & seeks beauty & an opportunity to ‘smell the roses’ like in this photo”, as I captured it in this perfect park moment one day… :)
So again, I ask, if you only had “One Year to Live”, what would you do? Would love to hear some replies below…. Thx! A sweet little indie-folk song in French about acceptance & vulnerability.  The singer puts questions out to someone, to everyone, to the ethers perhaps, asking them whether they would still accept them if they share their true self, complete with all their faults, hardships & weaknesses? Vulnerably, they extend their hand, wondering & waiting for someone to take it, so they may run off dancing freely into the world.

For as long as I can remember, and for many decades before that, people have sung Auld Lang Syne, the official/unofficial song, to ring in the new year.  Each year I’ve listened as we all sing the question: “Should old acquaintance be forgot, & never brought to mind?”  But as years passed, I began thinking: “To question this & not reply has long perplexed me why”, as I sing in this updated version, my ‘twist’ on the song.  So I decided to write some verses as a contemplative response: "Auld Lang Syne REPLY".  Please do have a listen, & afterwards, you may see the song in a bit of a different light.  Or maybe it’ll be all the same to you. But I think the value of our relationships “plead we ought, (to) give this pondering its due thought”. :)  Happy new year to you!

More about the history - According to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS):
“Perhaps (Robbie) Burns’s most famous work, these lines are sung across the world on Hogmanay (Scotland’s New Year’s Eve). However, this is not Burns’s original work. It was one of the traditional ballads he heard as he travelled around Scotland, and he wrote it down (with the music) in 1788. Burns reworked the piece (quite how much is unknown) and sent it to George Thomson in 1793 to be published in A Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs for the Voice. In a letter to Thomson, Burns described ‘the old song of the olden times, & which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript, untill I took it down from an old man’s singing.’ An earlier version of the song also appeared in Jame Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum.”

The NTS goes on to say: “One of Burns’s greatest legacies (in addition to his own works) was this transcription of hundreds of traditional ballads, which may otherwise have been lost.  ‘Auld lang syne’ roughly translates as ‘for old time’s sake’, a fitting song to be sung at the end of the year and other big occasions such as Scottish ceilidhs, weddings and, of course, Burns Suppers.”
