The past year has seen Swiss producer Lemonick rise from relative obscurity to the fore of the club music world, releasing efforts on Nervous Horizons, Clubwerks and Car Crash Set, all while cultivating a bare bones, hybrid style that’s almost immediately recognizable. “Locked Groove” represents his arrival in the Symbols Download Series, a track that balances the rambunctious feeling of East Coast club forms with a serious, spaced out sense of sound design, all topped off with enough lick-driven funk flair to keep you moving throughout.

EXCLUSIVE: fitzzgerald - Genius Of Love

This is the single and opening track from the various artists album BBC Late Junction Sessions: Unpopular Music, released by Gearbox Records on 8 July 2016.

Just a few days after appearing on Late Junction’s stage at the Latitude Festival in 2015, the genre-busting singer-songwriter Eska paid a visit to Studio 3 with Jesse and Louis Hackett, both members of the Anglo- Kenyan project Owiny Sigoma Band. This family outfit took the opportunity to explore the instruments available on the premises which include grand piano, vibraphone and the famous Maida Vale celeste, all of which provide the foundation for this playful arrangement of a Jesse Hackett composition. Listen out for some experimental backing vocals from Eska and Jesse’s baby girl Wonder, in her Maida Vale recording debut.

DJAO - Lights Off (SMBDL013)

Seattle’s DJAO, also known by his Club alias 7777777, reignites the Symbols Singles Series with “Lights Off”, utilizing repetition and a familiar sample to push the listener firmly out of their comfort zone. A singular drone, mechanical breathing and Lil Jon’s bracing chants make up the backbone of the track, managing a disorienting dragging effect even as sharp snares form a marshall beat. It’s a foreign zone to most, but one that is ultimately rewarding.

Los Angeles’ BK Beats is the latest artist to contribute to the SMBDL series, following up abrasive, club-focused efforts from DJAO and Modulaw with the plucky, romantic “Based”. Building on a wealth of previous work, both released via the ONE EIGHT HUNDRED label and a series of self-releases, “Based” is both immediately gratifying and intricately detailed, grafting pristine instrumentation and warm weather-ready samples onto exactly the sort of gravelly percussion we’ve come to expect from the bleeding edge of club music.
