Syntax Error - Born 2 Collide Competition Mix

My first in a series of mixes dedicated to the wonderful Tidy Trax Record Label, my favourite Hard House Label back in the day. Deep House Mix I did back in the day on my trusty Denon DN-S1000's. No BPM displays or Waveforms to help then, just your ears. As much as technology has really pushed how creative you can be as a DJ, it's always nice to listen back to when it was more stripped back and you had to rely on your talent more to ensure the beats and the bars were kept in time. Dream Magazine was launched in 1995 covering the UK happy hardcore rave scene. By mid-1997 the magazine had diversified to cover other styles of dance music and also had a mix-CD on the front every month, typically featuring happycore, old skool hardcore, D&B or trancecore. The magazine shut down in early 1998 but relaunched as Dream UK Magazine in October of the same year, still with a monthly cover-disc, but only lasted for half a dozen issues. This CD got absolutely rinsed when I was younger, sublime by Nick Grant this. Dream Dance Magazine was a must have for anyone into the Rave Scene in the 90's and the cover CD's were just amazing for a freebie.

Nick Grant - Musicology - Dream Magazine - Sep 97

The magazine shut down in early 1998 but relaunched as Dream UK Magazine in October of the same year, still with a monthly cover-disc, but only lasted for half a dozen issues. 

The best free cover CD ever in my humble opinion, the DJ's are on top form and the vocal talents of Magika and Ruff really shine. There's always a tinge of sadness listening to this CD due to Ruff's far too early departure from this world, he truly was an amazing MC and from everything I have read regarding him, a really brilliant person as well. Magika was massive in our scene in this period, and compliments the music so well on this CD, personally I've always rated him and his sets with Dougal were awesome. Great track selection by the DJ's, I was/am in awe of Unknown's scratching on this, just brilliant. Track of the CD has got to be Joe Bloggs (Jimmy J) Don't You Want Me, repeated on every listen back then and definitely still now. I must have listened to this CD at least 100 times over the years, it brings back so many memories of growing up with my Twin Brother, absolutely priceless.

Me and my Twin Brother loved the G.B.T. record label, so this CD was a very welcome addition to our collection. It was brilliant to hear a Bunter set in this era as it really broke the night up from a Happy Hardcore overload (if there is such a thing of course)It was being referred to as Trancecore back then, but Hard Dance is much better description for it. Bunter in 97/98 was really pushing the boundaries and the Trancier Sounds really were amazing to hear. One of my favourite sets is Bunter at Helter Skelter Progression NYE 1997 where he threw a full arsenal of his Hard Dance Slammers at the Ravers, extremely wonderful times & this CD captures some of the amazing tunes from then, absolutely brilliant.

The magazine shut down in early 1998 but relaunched as Dream UK Magazine in October of the same year, still with a monthly cover-disc, but only lasted for half a dozen issues.

This was an epic free CD to get, me and my Twin Brother absolutely smashed it out. We didn't get introduced to Happy Hardcore until 1996, so we'd missed out hearing a large number of these amazing tracks, it was the first time we'd actually heard the majority of them as Old Skool sets weren't really a thing in 1996. As you can imagine our heads were nearly blown off when we heard these great Breakbeat driven tunes. Plenty of Piano's and hands in the air drops on this CD and the standard of the tracklist speaks for itself, absolutely amazing.

DJ Spinback & DJ Pilgrim - Dreamscape 24 (1997)(Dream Dance Magazine)

Force & Styles were absolutely massive in the Happy Hardcore at the time of this cover CD, so for Dream Dance Magazine to get them on board to do a mix for this free album was a brilliant masterstroke. Force & Styles were pushing for a Top 40 Chart Entry and were very much in demand. There is some absolutely brilliant tracks on here, Guiding Light, Body Slam & Apollo 13 pt2. really do the business. The duet version of Paradise & Dreams is rather a let down in my opinion whether you liked the watered down versions they did for to try to get in the Charts is a very decent debate, personally me and my Twin Brother weren't fans. The Chart versions that were produced by Force & Styles really did take something away from the soul of the originals, which were good enough to be pushed in their own right. Heart Of Gold, which I suggest were most people's entry into Happy Hardcore in this era featuring the sublime vocals of Jenna was absolutely butchered by Kelly Llorenna, which was very sad indeed. Anyway I digress this is an awesome CD and for a freebie, you don't get much better.

An absolute corker of a free CD this is, the tracklist is a brilliant reflection of the class tunes being released in this era. Spinback is on top form ( a very underrated and utilised DJ back in the day, I never heard him play one bad set, his set at Helter Skelter - The Outer Limits alongside Ruff is absolutely superb, if you haven't heard it it's well worth checking out) & of course anything that Ruff (R.I.P.) touched before his unfortunate passing was just pure Gold. There is some wonderful tracks on here, but Vinyl Junkie - Tearin My Love Apart is just in a class of its own, definitely in my top 20 favourite ever Hardcore Tunes, it's just everything you'd ever want in a Happy Hardcore track, and I think it is universally loved by the Hardcore fraternity and rightly so. I hope you enjoy the CD, it's well worth a listen.

I didn't purchase this Issue for some unknown reason (unforgiveable I know ha ha), so it wasn't until many years later that I got to actually listen to the mix, which is thanks to the good old Interweb. Swan-E absolutely nails this mix, he's such a talented DJ, his mixes were always nice & tight and he delights us here with an exceptional tracklist full of epic rollers. 46 minutes of pure joy in this CD, it's well worth a listen.

A superb cover CD this is, the tracklist is exceptional. Fury does a brilliant job of showcasing just how much variety there was in Hardcore in this era. It's a shame that everything started getting pigeon holed as a set with all these different elements of the Hardcore Genre in it would really get the crowd going mental back then & you wouldn't know what track would be dropping next. A truly brilliant mix for you all to enjoy.

The second instalment of my Classic Trance Favourites series. I haven't had much opportunity to go on my dexx the past few weeks, however with the finish time of 12.30pm on a Friday with my new job, I managed to jump on for an hour after work today. Unplanned apart from Cass & Slide and Lustral, and a decent effort for a straight off the batter. Here's a mix I knocked up in tribute to the absolutely phenomenal producing team of Force & Styles, to those of us of a certain age these boys were the bomb, their talents shone through like a beacon for this era of Happy Hardcore and you realise on listening back just how timeless some of these tracks are. There's a couple of cringe moments in the mix, my trusty DDJ 1000 and laptop seem to not be friends at the moment, however I think after the raft of updates received recently it should improve. Anyway enough of my tiny issues in a World where there are plenty. 90 minutes of pure hardcore happiness and sing along anthems to transport you back to simpler times with the legends Force & Styles.

Jez Toon - Tidy Trax Anthology Part 3

Part 1 of my tribute to the one and only Vinylgroover, one of my favourite producers back in the day and his sets were always one of the highlights of any Rave and tapepack in the 90's. He was absolutely prolific in the studio and there was a big void left when he went to pastures new in the Hard Dance scene at the end of 1999. This mix captures a quite brilliant time for Happy Hardcore and there is some real smile on the face tracks. Enjoy peeps.

There is some slight distortion on the scratching due to the rookies error of not checking the latency settings after an update doh! so apologies for that.

Had a little bit of an impromptu gathering with a couple of the lads. Set the decks up in the kitchen as you do and had a real good sesh - music and beer wise ha ha. Recorded an hour to see what the outcome would be, not the best mixing I've ever done, but it's not too bad to say I was 3 sheets to the Wind ha ha. One of the lads got a bit giddy with the performance pads on a couple of the tracks, but it was a good laugh.

I first started listening to Happy Hardcore in 1996 along with my Twin Brother at the age of 17, it became an obsession pretty quickly due to the euphoric feelings the amazing pianos and vocals would supply. Dougal quickly became my favourite DJ due to his amazing track selections, his sets were full of smile on your face bangers and was always the first tape played out of any new tape pack, indeed I wouldn't even buy a tape pack unless Dougal was on it 😂 I got my first set of decks in 1999 at the age of 20 - Gemini PT1000 MK2 Direct Drive & Numark DM1001X Mixer, I wouldn't say I was a natural by any stretch of the imagination, it was car crash central at first, but I managed to teach myself beat matching and phrasing to an adequate standard within 6 months. Unfortunately around the time I bought my decks Hardcore was on the decline and Trance was getting huge, so Hardcore Vinyl was getting harder to source, so I started playing Trance instead whilst still harbouring my love for Hardcore. 

I've always struggled with my confidence, so I didn't really push myself in any meaningful way to become a DJ, of course I had dreams and I was a decent standard, but I was painfully shy when meeting new people so the idea of talking to promoters put the fear of God in me. In 2001 I went to my First Retro event up in Yarm and this changed my DJing direction totally, I started buying as much Classic House as I could, the Pianos were infectious and the atmosphere at the events was amazing. I managed to purchase some Technics 1200 MK5's in 2004 and got some bookings for some Classic House night's. I was still buying Hardcore Tape/CD Packs as I still loved Hardcore, me and my Twin Brother were the only one's out of our friends still listening to it, Hardcore had evolved to UK Hardcore, and the tracks being produced were phenomenal it was a brilliant time for the Hardcore scene. I wasn't buying any of the new Hardcore releases on Vinyl, as I was getting booked for more House events, and there was an abundance of House records to be bought. It wasn't until 2010 that I actually went digital, so I was finally able to download huge amounts of Hardcore Tracks and mess about with them at home, but I wasn't pushing that sound it was just for my own pleasure at home. In the DJing stakes I'd started playing Tech House and got some good bookings for that, I still love Tech House, there is definitely a brilliant groove to it. 

2013 was an extremely difficult year for me personally. I stopped DJing altogether and just went on my decks sporadically at home. I sold my beloved Technics in 2015 due to personal circumstances, an absolutely horrible day in my life that was (still kept my Vinyl though). I bought a DJ Controller with some of the proceeds which I used very sparingly. In 2017 my life changed massively for the better personally after 4 1/2 years of being in the doldrums when I met my Partner, who is an absolute Star. Unfortunately my controller had to go into storage due to space issues and to be honest I still wasn't ready to jump back into the World of DJing. Fast forward to 2021 after 8 years of hardly doing any DJing my fingers had started to get the itch, I could feel the passion return and I was getting a lot of prompting from my 2 best mates, so room was made for the Controller by my good lady and she was brought out of storage and amazingly enough she still worked. I had no targets when I restarted DJing I just wanted to play the stuff I loved for me, which was naturally Hardcore. Covid had struck though and there was a huge online community growing, I saw an advertisement from Hardcore Vibes Radio for a Guest Slot, so I did a mix for them and then got taken on as a resident which has been absolutely amazing for me both personally and professionally. I've also started playing House again and am now very proud to be one of the residents at a brilliant local Burnley Night called Luv House, onwards and upwards 😊
