02 Living On The Ceiling

This ambient neoclassical composition draws inspiration from the "Model for the Monument to Titian," sculpted in 1792 by the famous neoclassical artist Antonio Canova. Although initially intended to honor a great artist, the sculpture ultimately served as the final resting place for Canova himself, illustrating a poignant story of artistic legacy that comes full circle.

Much like its inspiration, SYNAMBIENT’s ‘Model of the Monument to Titian’ reflects the initial stirrings of the creative act, uniting thematic threads in an ambient synthesis before embarking on a vigorous journey of activity, as the pattern is assembled. Blocks, sculptures, and themes are interwoven in an ever-ascending pyramid of sound. However, similar to much of life's work, there exists both a resignation and a realization that only that model will be completed, leading to acceptance.

This painted wood and wax model, now housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, was Canova's proposed design for a grand tomb for the celebrated Venetian Renaissance painter, Titian. The monument was intended for the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, the very church where Titian is buried. However, the ambitious project was never realized in Canova's lifetime.

In a poignant turn of events, following Canova's own death in 1822, his devoted pupils adapted his original design for Titian's monument to honor their master. The result is the magnificent "Monument to Antonio Canova," completed in 1827 and located, ironically, in the same Basilica dei Frari. This pyramidal monument, a powerful testament to Canova's genius, incorporates allegorical figures representing the arts and now serves as his cenotaph, containing his heart.
