Welcome to the Syncing Up Podcast hosted by Matt Klinman and Ethan Strauss. Matt is a comedy writer (The Onion, Adult Swim, Comedy Central) and Ethan is a sports writer (The Athletic, ESPN) but more importantly Matt and Ethan are LONGTIME FRIENDS and this podcast is mostly their conversations about the hubris of tech, the cancer of social media and the ways we can get out of this pathetic digital dystopia they've sucked us into. Can the evil forces of surveillance capitalism be thwarted by... friendship? Truly only by listening to this podcast can anyone hope to find out.

Ep 1 - A Faded Internet

Matt and Ethan discuss the recent layoffs at digital media companies and if they were because of Facebook or because people didn't like the wares they peddled. The fellas also delve into if "PC Culture is killing comedy" or whatever and how it's all really about trust.

Ep 2 - A Content Desert

Ethan had quite a week! Matt talks to him about how it felt to be the center of NBA news for a cycle and if that's the sort of thing humans are meant to handle. The guys then define "Platform Cucks," talk about how people like sports because they are metaphors for life and get a little bit into psychedelics but not enough that cops should be worried.

Matt and Ethan are back to talk about the bombshell Verge report on moderation at Facebook, another take on moderation from SlateStarCodex, why maybe all this mod is just showing us the internet is being organized wrong and some observations about Bay Area Billionaires from Ethan's latest reporting piece.

Ep 4 - All Things In Moderation

Matt explains what the hell is going on with Andrew Yang and 4chan and why it's important. Ethan puts forth his micro-generation theory. There are also rants about age gating the internet and Facebook's new plan to ruin messaging like they did the internet.

Ep 5 - The Yang Gang Storms The Keep

Matt and Ethan are BACK! Ethan talks about his new book "The Victory Machine," Matt talks about BUILDING and both of them desperately search for meaning.

Ep 6 - THE RETURN

The boys get into it over fraud and the media and tech and media and fraud and media and tech and tech and tech and also media. Plus a great song!

Ep 7 - FRAUD

The boys talk Red Pills, act in a manner offensive to vaguely eastern European people and Ethan tells the tale of his time at Yelp.

Ep 8 - Muskegee Airmen

Twitter and Facebook block a story and become the editors we've known they are all along! Antitrust is on the ballot! And Matt and Ethan get into it over the whole NBA Finals ratings thing! The boys are back and give no discernible explanation for being gone for so long nor do they give any explanation for the cadence of new episodes in the future! It's a new Syncing Up!!

Ep 9 - Know When To Hold 'Em

The boys take a tour of the HOTTEST new social networks on the planet Gab and Parler. Plus they argue about censorship and argue even more about tech's impact on the 2020 election. As President Obama would say "Stop The Steal!"

Ep 10 - Gabbin' in the Parler

The Great Deplatforming has occurred and Matt and Ethan can't help but argue about it. Can Matt convince Ethan this is actually good for BOTH SIDES of the argument? Can Ethan convince Matt he's an unwitting pawn in a neoliberal cabal? Will they finally solve everything or is all this just a futile expression of ashkenazi interruption culture?

Ep 11 - Ban Us All

Matt Klinman is a comedy writer (The Onion, Funny or Die, Adult Swim), Ethan Strauss is a sports writer (The Athletic, ESPN). They are two long-time friends who started their careers on the internet but keep finding themselves having conversations about how the digital world has become increasingly cancerous, bleak, centralized and lame. Is Facebook destroying the internet? Is Twitter destroying politics? Is Instagram destroying children? Is this false dichotomy destroying rational arguments? Whatever is going on, Matt and Ethan have found they keep talking about Tech vs Media and in ways they haven't really heard anyone else: like (somewhat) normal people would. Or at least how people who care about comedy and/or sports would. So that's what we are recording and releasing in an attempt to get other people to also start having these same conversations... before it's too late?
