Junkie XL - At The Speed of Force - Liquid DNB Remix #NowScoreThis

Tom Holkenborg (Junkie XL) provided the original guitar stems of “At the speed of force”. The theme from the Flash in Zack Snyders Justice League series. It is not a contest but more of a show case of what the community of producers, composers and music makers can do with it. No prizes to win.

I’m not much of a sample flipper so I took the stems for imspiration and the key of the track. I also did not make it a movie score but a dance track with a melodic base line, typical for me. The speed was upped from 80 to 130 bpm. 

The gear used are emulations of the TR909, Oberheim OB-Xa, Moog mini, Yamaha DX7, Buchla Easel, Solina String ensemble, Melotron and Roland Juno 6. I also used a choir instrument from Pianobook and Spitfire Labs (Choir: Long). From the Spitfire I also used string harmonics from original strings. And finally the Hammond B3 makes an appearance.

Even if I did something completely different compared to the original, the main riff as played in stem 5 is still recognizable. I made 4 versions of it for a different experience throughout the track. For the first I cut the high end a bit and added a (Roland Juno) chorus. I also added auto pan (Pancake) to this for movement. The second variant adds a higher octave, using Soundtoys Little Alterboy, giving it certain sharpness to add to the intensity. Variant 3 contains a ducking filter (W.A. Doge Pro) to add a rhythmic flavour to the sound. The 4th variant, Is without Litle Alterboy but with the ducking filter. 

I used stem 2, 3 and 4 as a base for drones. Reversing, chopping, panning and eq-ing them. Putting distortion with iZotope Trash on stem 4. The track contains, next to variations of the main theme a part around the B3 and a choral part. All the parts (except the stem samples of cause) where played live from my midi keyboard. Every part is played fully with variations. No copying a bar into infinity. I also rarely touch the quantise button. Only when it fits the purpose in the track.

Four weeks ago I featured Musicians for Ukraine Volume 1, an album where all earnings go to humanitarian help for fugitives in need. Now, there is Volume 2 available, and this show is solely dedicated to this album with great music by AUEL, Alchemorph, Deep Sky Musics, Two Weeks, Inum, LA Fillette, Utopia Fade, Eagle Rays, Carameladora, Peter Wild, Another Dawn, Loss Combinator, Renovatio, and Olduvai (Musicians For Ukraine Volume 2).

Greetings!

The original track comes from my esteemed colleague Markus Vogt (aka Klangbiotop), whom I only recently got to know through my professional activities. The track "Gedankenlos" of his "Hypnoid-EP" inspired me immediately and so this remix was created in a short time with his agreement.

The main focus was to use as many of the original sounds as possible and to add to them or modify them in the style of the originals. The bass carpet was widened and reduced in some frequency to get enough room for a new bassline that alternates with the dub piano. Although the arrangement was shortened to further increase of the song's appeal by making it more compact.

Hallo zusammen!

Der Original-Track stammt von meinem geschätzten Kollegen Markus Vogt (aka Klangbiotop), den ich erst vor kurzem über meine berufliche Tätigkeit kennengelernt habe. Der Track „Gedankenlos“ seiner „Hypnoid-EP“ hat mich sofort inspiriert und so entstand mit seinem Einverständnis in kurzer Zeit dieser Remix.

Im Vordergrund standen dabei möglichst viele der Original-Sounds zu verwenden und diese zu Ergänzen oder in Anlehnung an die Originale zu modifizieren. Der Bass-Teppich wurde verbreitert und frequenzmäßig entschärft um Platz für eine neue Bassline zu schaffen, die im Wechsel mit dem Dub-Piano spielt. Gleichzeitig wurde das Arrangement gekürzt um durch mehr Kompaktheit die Attraktivität des Songs weiter zu erhöhen.
