Fuertemente influenciado por el concepto del selector "todoterreno", Balheim es un dj asturiano miembro del colectivo Portal que se caracteriza por no cerrarse en ningún estilo pero siempre buscando una coherencia durante el desarrollo de sus sesiones. 

Su paleta de sonidos, aunque variada, cuenta con una clara predominancia por los sonidos IDM, electro y techno old school, algo que le han servido para compartir cabina con artistas de la talla de Eduardo de la Calle, Reedale Rise, Ceephax Acid Crew o Detroit in Effect en populares salas como Siroco, Lanna Club o Ballesta. Actualmente es residente de la fiesta Serendipia Club que tiene su lugar todos los viernes en Stardust.

Strongly influenced by the concept of a polyvalent selector, Balheim is a dj from Asturias member of the Portal collective that one of the main themes is having a broad range of styles but always mantaining it coherent. 

IDM, electro and old school techno are the main themes in his sonic palette, which is something that has allowed him to share the decks with names such as Eduardo De La Calle, Reedale Rise, Ceephax Acid Crew and Detroit In Effect, all this in popular venues such as Siroco, Lanna Club and Ballesta. Nowadays he is resident of Serendipia club that takes place every friday in Stardust.

The Laboratory Podcast #74 | Balheim

We zoom in on the local Amsterdam scene this week and welcome DJ Merlín to the series. He is the programmer of the lauded local unit Kraft und Licht. Whether it's deep in the Amsterdam forest or in the hull of an old freight ship, they bring together the right ingredient of audience and artists that include Byron Yeates, D. Tiffany, our friend Aleksa Alaska, Sansibar, and many others. He boasts a major in composition and sounds design from the Arts Academy in Utrecht and regularly blesses the K&L line-ups with his edgy and silky smooth selections. With over ten years of experience as a DJ and a string of quality releases on Dubiks and Kraft und Licht Records, he knows how to bring magic to the dancefloor. We are excited to hear his upcoming releases in 2023 as he is one to keep an eye on. Lock in for an hour-long selection with some of his own upcoming music sprinkled in.

Nocta Numerica Mix #61 / Hypnotic Groove

Creator of electronic folksong and detective noir, Ali Renault has continued to release music under various guises now for over 20 years. Born in Bristol and eventually residing in Chester in the late 80s, his musical upbringing was everything from synth pop to metal to acid house & techno. A deep connection with Italo disco in the early naughties kept Ali busy for some time and has since released a solo album and a number of EPs under different guises, Cestrian, Parasols & of course his Ali Renault alias as well as starting his own labels, Vivod and Hearse putting out fresh music from all walks of the electro galaxy. 
You can catch Ali playing regularly in his hometown of Margate.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- That's a tough one as there are so many. I guess the first band I really got into was Metallica. This was back in 85 and of course these days they are nothing like the band they used to be, sadly but I can't deny they had a huge impact on me back then. Black Sabbath too. Then, in later years I got into electronic music via detroit techno, artists like Jeff Mills, Surgeon, UR etc. were a big influence and it was around this time I sold a lot of my guitar equipment to buy my first synthesizers in an attempt to make techno.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- Lot's on the go at the moment. I have a Cestrian ep coming out on Dalmata Daniel, which is a split release with Roberto Auser. A couple more Renault productions being released on compilations later in the year. Me and Sebastian Muravchik are releasing our 2nd Heartbreak album this year, only 15 years after our debut, Lies :-) My wife and I are releasing an album with our new project, Body Double this year and my Kosmische band, AUTOHAUs are releasing our first album next month on Ombrelle Concrete Records.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- I have to say the most relevant resource for me over the last 2 decades is probably Holland's Intergalactic FM station. There's rarely a day that goes by without me tuning in to one of their 3 channels. If you haven't tuned in yet then I thoroughly recommend you do. https://www.intergalactic.fm/

What inspires you now to create music?

- Mainly my peers. They keep me on my toes.  My location plays a big part these days. I lived in the city for too long and was suffocated by life there. Now I'm lucky to live by the sea where there is a nice community of like minded freaks to feed off and I have the headspace and time to delve into more projects.

Sydney-based Jensen Interceptor, who usually slides from Detroit electro and Miami bass to italo, 90s breaks, EBM and techno in his sets and productions, dove exclusively into his electro crates for this 2-hour journey through the sound we love. 

Check up for his releases on @cultivated-electronics, @cpurecords and @boysnoizerecords, which gained support from Dave Clarke, Helena Hauff, Radio Slave and others.
