Playing with macOS speech synthesis… and some effects, including a generic drone.

Recording my voice with a tanpura-style drone synth tuned to G♯. On the voice track, I used SSL Native Vocalstrip, iZotope Neoverb, and Valhalla Supermassive (increasing the mix than trailing off to get the reverb tail).

Sending my favourite u-he Hive patch (played on the WX11 windcontroller in Just Intonation from 50Hz) to two convolution patches from Bitwig’s new Convolution module.

Convoluted Hive

Noodling with Chet Singer’s “Silverwood Tenor Sax” ensemble for Reaktor over a simple chord progression (B♭ M9, E♭ M9, A♭ M9, D♭ M9, G♭ M9, Fm7, F7sus2, E6sus2) played on Lounge Lizard, with a simple Bassline (Strobe 2), and a simple drum pattern (EZdrummer).

Self-indulgent noodling over a simple chord progression.

Retinda

Simple noodling using the SoprSax! patch on the Yamaha VL70-m Physical Modelling synthesizer using the Yamaha WX11 windcontroller. Vaguely inspired by listening to a video about Wayne Shorter’s Infant Eyes.
Might become useful in a future piece of musicking.

Having some fun with the Chet Singer’s Silverwood Tenor Sax ensemble for Reaktor. Usually not much of a fan of instrument emulation but this one felt satisfying. (Was using my WX11 in Bitwig Studio with Reaktor and the first-party reverb.)

Inner Voicing

Sending Chet Singer’s Silverwood tenor sax into the AIR Talkbox vowel-like formant filter. Works as good as a guitar, if not more. A wind controller like my Yamaha WX11 makes sense in a voice-like context.

Hawaye

Doubled a sample of melismatic Bulgarian singing using the Pitch Follower and Envelope Follower from the @ToyboxAudio Free Pack for Reaktor Blocks. The synth sound itself is also from the Toybox Free Pack and modulating the warp factor with envelope made a lot of sense.

Sounds quite effective, to my ears. The effect is similar to what can famously be done with the MS-20 but achievable with no-cost software (Reaktor Player and Toybox Free Pack; I’ve used the full version of Reaktor but it should be usable in the free version). Chances are that similar options exist in Open Source software but this was quite easy, fairly resource-efficient, and rather convincing.

In The Grid, part of the Bitwig Studio 3 beta, a tiny demo of a simple implementation of Karplus-Strong string synthesis (one of the simplest forms of Physical Modelling). (Yes, I know “Strong” was Alexander’s last name.)
