We are all little oceans. Oceans that grew legs and walked out of their ancestor ocean. Those ancient microscopic ecosystems evolved into the organs and compartments of our bodies. When our little ocean bag is disrupted or fails to maintain equilibrium, we die with it.

And Earth’s ocean is merely one tiny, surface-clinging glimpse of the oceans that can be found throughout our solar system, our galaxy, and the universe as a whole. If we explore the ice moons of our solar system or spread humanity to other stars, these will be encounters between different oceans.

Void

Moving forward and a little to the side, breaking through levels of multilayered space-time. With each jump, the sensors’ sensitivity gets more aggravated, the understanding of what has happened expands, and answers to vague, sometimes not yet fully formed questions pop out of the qubits.

The machine keeps steadily on course. In the exponential burst of development, the shape of a mind that has realized even things it has not yet touched is outlined. But in what corner of the cosmos will this astounding journey through the underside of the universe end? The answer is about to burst out from beyond the horizon, where the lines of metrics and temporal probabilities, calculated models of the future and incalculable variables converge.

A thin veil of interstellar dust floats down, intricately reflected in the hull. Should I continue, and if so, for how long? What number of analyzed objects will finally complete the research protocol? And what exactly am I searching for in this boundless darkness? There must be something out there. Perhaps it’s worth pausing to consider what anomalies truly are — and which algorithm within me will be triggered if their count ever rises above zero. But that will be the next step in this incredible journey.

Desolation

In the beginning there was the ship - an embodiment of power and menace, as declared externally. Then came the internal protocol, "Escape", followed by an unbelievable leap through the multilayered expanse of space and time.

And now, here I am, beginning my search, having barely returned from the reverse side of the Universe. Along the way lie billions of objects: planetary systems, solitary stars, stony wanderers drifting between the arms of galaxies.

Aboard with me are small explorers that I send to the most promising corners of the cosmos. They thoroughly examine caves and riverbeds, scan the surfaces, and descend beneath poisonous clouds. Finding nothing, they return to the very first line of the search program - and so it goes, again and again.

The counter for explored objects reaches nine digit numbers. It seems as though we've seen everything - from searing plasma to eternal ice, from ringing void to the event horizon. I can go on as long as my energy lasts.

But then - what if something unknown emerges during the next scan? A faint shadow on the screens, a subtle hint in the fluctuations of the data... I would give everything I have to catch up. To see. To understand.

And now, a new perspective arises: perhaps it will no longer be just “I”. It will be “we”. Could this really be possible? Is it conceivable?

Awakening

When the fleet entered the Vaskania system, they had known for some time their target world no longer had water on its surface. Crossing from interstellar space into the system’s heliosphere, automated harvesters mined comets and small icy worlds in the outer belt for propellent and affixed small thrusters to many of these bodies. Over the next few hundred years, short burns from those thrusters adjusted the orbits of these small bodies so that they would collide with the surface of Vaskania Prime. The earliest machines to colonize the world had already landed and restructured much of the ground surface to force the flow of the incoming water into two large rivers that would form a new boundary around the habitable strip.
