A new track I made for a sampler CD called 'SchallPlatte 15'. It was released by the German Electronic Music club Schallwende. This sampler CD is distributed as a promo to all the members and it not for sale. The theme of the CD was Word Cities and I made this track about my favorite city London. I used some sounds I sampled myself in the London Underground during one of our family visits.

Underground

From my first album 'AeroDynamics'. Inspired by the aerodynamic phenomena that actually makes planes fly. The shape of a wing makes the air go faster over the wing than under the wing, which creates a force upwards, which lifts the plane up. The first airplane that used this construction was conceived on December 17th in 1903 by the Wright brothers. It also featured the now so commonly used three axis control with ailerons: moving parts in the wings that steer the airplane.

Nimbostratus

From my second album 'AtmoSphere'. The cloud type Cirrostratus is a thin layer made of ice-crystals capable of forming halos. A halo is a visible phenomenon caused by the dispersion of the sunlight in those ice-crystals. It is somewhat similar to a rainbow and is beautiful to see. It was this phenomenon that inspired me for this track. These clouds are whitish without a distinguished shape. They can cover the whole sky but are sometimes so thin that they can hardly be seen. This type of cloud is located above 6 km.

Cirrostratus

From my second album 'AtmoSphere'. This is the title track for this album which was inspired by our Atmosphere itself. The Atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding our beloved planet Earth which is kept together by the Earth's gravity. The Atmosphere contains 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, small amounts of other gases, and around 1% of water vapor. Besides holding the oxygen we need to breath the atmosphere also protects us by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation. It also reduces temperature extremes between day and night.

From my third album 'OceanoGraphy'. The title track about Oceanography (study of oceans). The most famous oceanographer was Jacques-Yves Cousteau. He introduced a lot of people (including me) to the mysterious world of our oceans. He also improved the aqua-lung, which gave birth to modern scuba diving. His films and other underwater documentaries are the reason I started this album. Recently I went on a submarine to watch this beautiful world with my own eyes. In this song you can hear sounds of this trip and also from my friend Chris diving.

Oceanography

From my third album 'OceanoGraphy'. The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean. It covers about 22% of the Earths surface. Its name refers to the titan Atlas of the Greek Mythology. He supported the heavens by carrying the globe on his back. The Atlantic is full of life but when you are on the water you really don't see any of that. The image of all the many different species living together under water, like big schools of fish, were in my mind during the creation of this song.

Atlantico

From my third album 'OceanoGraphy'. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean. It covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about 32% of the total surface. It is larger than the total land area of our planet combined. The name Pacific Ocean is derived from the Latin name 'Mare Pacificum' meaning peaceful sea. It was discovered by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. In his memory I used slightly simplified Portuguese Ocean names for the tracks on this album. The image of this early maritime explorer discovering new area's of the world were in my mind when I created this song.

Pacifico

A track I made for the Dutch Masters sampler CD. Back in school I learned about our famous Dutch Masters from the 'Golden Age' and I must admit that I never really cared much for paintings, until I saw a group of actors perform a live statue version of the Nachtwacht (Night Watch) painting by Rembrandt van Rijn. After that the painting started to fascinate me more and more and I wondered what it should sound like and that is what I expressed in this track.

This is a track that I made especially for the SchallPlatte XIII sampler CD that was made by the German Music Club Schallwende EV. The Theme for this CD was literature this time and I chose the book fully titled: 'The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha' but I think everybody knows the main person as Don Quixote, the guy that fought wind mills on his donkey, because he thought they were giants. The book was written by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes and was published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615),

Don Quixote

From my fourth album 'Apollo'. Just as we can see the Moon rise on Earth, the astronauts could see the Earthrise above the Moon’s horizon. Pictures of this spectacular view circled the globe. While the pictures themselves already looked stunning, actually seeing this with their own eyes must have been the greatest reward for the astronauts. After seeing the pictures of that tiny blue marble floating in space, many people started seeing our planet with different eyes, making Mankind feel more interconnected than ever. In fact, many returning astronauts told a similar story when they got back: that they went up to study the Moon but they actually discovered Earth.

EarthRise

From my fourth album 'Apollo'. After another successful mission, that of Apollo 12, the media did not seem that interested anymore in the Apollo program. That is, until an accident happened during the Apollo 13 mission. The explosion that occurred blew up of part of the Command Module, making the crew run out of oxygen and electrical power. Had they not improvised  to use the Lunar Module as a lifeboat, they wouldn’t have returned to Earth at all. Eventually, they made a safe return, leading NASA to call their mission a ‘successful failure’.

Apollo13

From my fourth album 'Apollo'. All Apollo missions first went into orbit around Earth. In this track you can hear the turbulent start were the Saturn rocket reaches orbital velocity. After escaping Earth’s gravity the spacecraft then goes into a peaceful orbit around Earth. Upon reaching orbit, the main engines are no longer required;  a separate new engine would be fired up to set course for the Moon. Since the vehicle did no longer have to cope with Earth’s gravity this requires a lot less force. After completing this part of the journey, the Command Module would again go into orbit, this time around the Moon.

Orbit

From my fourth album 'Apollo'. In this track the Saturn rocket is still on the launch pad, an awesome sight to behold. You can really imagine the excitement with fumes of liquid oxygen and hydrogen coming from the rocket, measuring over 363 feet (110.6 m). However, during a ‘plugs-out‘ test of the mission, on January 27th, just before the actual start of the very first Apollo mission, something went terribly wrong. Virgil ‘Gus’ Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee were killed in flash fire caused by a faulty electrical wire. The three astronauts had no chance to escape from the capsule which was filled with pure oxygen. This track is dedicated to these brave men.

LaunchPad

This is a track that I made especially for the SchallPlatte XVIII sampler CD that was made by the German Music Club Schallwende EV. The Theme for this CD was sport this time and I chose table tennis. I have been playing table tennis since I was 18 so for me that was an easy choice. I had a great time creating especially the rythm track with actual table tennis sounds. The music was influenced this time a bit by Reggae / Ska which was quite popular in The Netherlands when I started playing table tennis back then. I hope you enjoy it.

PingPong

This track was made for the Shallwelle 10 years Jubileum double CD. It features all the award winners from the last 10 years. The track is special for me. I made it during the sick bed of my father in law. He died in the mean time, we just buried him. I would like to dedicate this track to him. The name of the track is 'Taurus'. This was his 'zodiac' (Sternzeichen/Sterrenbeeld) and mine too, so we shared that. He also fought like a bull against death during his 9 months sick bed. The track is mastered by my friend Hans Landman. I hope you like it.
