With a haunting cover of Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”, and a stellar debut EP Rooms most recently pacing the pair’s current ascension into alt-pop circles the world over; The Familiar’s latest single “Patience” dives into more personal territory. Mirsky weaves a vocal-central aesthetic through a plea for patience to her lover over Martinsen’s pulsating, synth-driven beat and rhythmic, foggy pop hooks for a tune that swallowed us up from our first listen. The Familiar’s deft yet subtle use of rolling staccato synths played off a lush set of vocal reverberations also has us drawing up comparisons from the gloomiest of Kavinsky tunes to College’s wonderful Heritage LP and even a touch of Johnny Jewel laden synthetica. And in case you weren’t aware, those are all very lofty associations. Hop on The Familiar wagon with “Patience” before literally anyone else on behalf of a TMN premiere.

With each sonic movement on the introductory self-titled EP from New York’s WALL there's a commitment to defend a punctuated duality between curiosity and triumph. After all, what’s a band worth but its message? A certain self-awareness of the very question is at the heart of the WALL apparatus and listening along as they discover themselves throughout this EP is invigorating and scary. Tone and rhythm whirl together, like an emergency exit door choreographed to swing flawlessly in time to its damned and chaotic Pavlovian alarm bell. From the first rigid and cautious seconds of their EP, WALL unleashes an uncanny self-awareness that methodically slips pages ripped from demented No Wave legacies through a shredder of their own design. Their spirit is exceptional and candid; generous heaps of raw energy and inspired moments of tension demand repeat rotations on your turntable. Formed in Berlin in one night, longstanding friends Rhys Edwards and Rhys Williams conceptualised ‘Ulrika Spacek’ and came up with The Album Paranoia as their debut album title. Moving back to their shared house ‘KEN’ last summer, an ex art gallery in Homerton, they began work on the project which was to become 10 track experimental alt-rock masterpiece The Album Paranoia. Today Ulrika Spacek premiere their first gripping single, ‘She’s a Cult’, on the Quietus.  

Ulrika Spacek’s soundscape is a cross pollination of hypnotic fuzz, with Tom Verlaine (Television) and Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) guitar idiosyncrasies and intertwining feelings of both angst and melancholia. Drawing influences from Krautrock to Sonic Youth and the above, the two Rhys’ brought in three expert musicians to complete the live formula, which unified The Album Paranoia and ‘Oysterland’, a series of club nights curated by the band, showcasing their first live performances with art installations.

New single "Brother" from Syvia released 3/1/19

Syvia exists where the Northern Lights of Norway meet the skyscrapers of New York City. The Brooklyn-based indie electronic band is led by Ruth Mirsky (ex. The Drums), an American-Norwegian citizen who was born and raised on the Bowery.  Their latest single “Brother” will be released just before their first performance of 2019 at The New Colossus Festival in NYC. 

Emotive guitar riffs intertwine with atmospheric synths and pulsing drums to create a brand of dark, brooding electronic pop sure to entrance listeners. Under the Radar says, "Fans of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cure, and My Blood Valentine, you’re going to eat this up.” Meanwhile, Impose Magazine writes of their single, “’Anxious Animal' breaks down the anxiety and nerves to a primordial level that feels freeing and empowering.”

Syvia’s songs have been featured on TV shows such as Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Stitchers, The Vampire Diaries, and ABC's premiere of 666 Park Avenue. Syvia was a Green Label Sound/Soundcloud Undiscovered finalist a few years ago and toured Scandinavia as part of Brooklyn Brewery’s first ever “Brooklyn Sound” program. Syvia is currently writing new music that blends pop, rock, post-punk and electronic genres.
