At the beginning of the new millennium Matthew Herbert, a famous British producer with a unique approach to making electronic dance music and a faible for many aliases like Dr Rockit or Wishmountain, released a beautiful Downtempo track named after Café de Flore on Boulevard Saint Germain which contains field recording samples from that famous location and French-style melodies played with an accordion (what else 😉). This beautiful and outstanding piece of music is so romantic that I immediately fell in love with and finally wanted to make an own Downtempo edit out of it. Ranch head ganders asked Sander to present an extended 12 hour set to the Ranch community, a fusion between his 2 alias Johnny Lee Johnson (Soul-Jazz-Hop Hop) and Slick Marcel Rick (Disco to Funk). As we sit at home, we find ourselves anew and see things in a new light. So did I. Inspired by numerous sets out there, I’ve been going into my own musical history to find forgotten gems of my youth (Mark Knopfler & Pete Philly & Perquisite), new artists I fell in love with (J.J. Cale & Kevin Morby), timeless classics (Nina Simone & George Harrison), and music with Dutch lyrics (Spinvis & Wim de Craene).

This special Telecast stems from a desire to listen to and work with different music. The music I normally listen to just isn’t cutting it at the moment and is propelling me to shake things up a little. My desire to listen to something that gives comfort and is emotionally uplifting to help me through times of distress is what brought this mix to light. 

This Telecast is filled with music that invokes memories from my past. From the time I set sail every weekend with my best friend from high school, the time when I was singing of the top of my lungs while driving around artists for a festival, the time when I felt pure happiness just walking around a train station listening to music on my way to meet friends, a time when I found out that the group of people I hung out with weren’t who I thought they were, a time when I rode back to Portugal and didn’t get further than Ghent, a time when I had no idea who I was and found solace in music, a time when I found big emotions within me through music with Dutch lyrics, a time when… well, you get the gist.

It’s been emotional, it’s been beautiful and although I could keep working on this Telecast and endlessly tweak it, it’s now time to release it and share this with you. I hope you’ll find comfort when listening and realise that even though these times are though, they also shine new light on you and offer you a chance to change things around for the better. And, hopefully, in doing so, when things do go back to normal again you’ll find yourself stronger than ever.
