Leaving/Arriving

Random events. Repetition. Both are movements that appear as opposites. Yet, the human form is a combination of random events and repetition. Our perception of what is around us is subject to their conjoined movement. This is the reason art appears as one thing at a specific juncture of our lives and becomes different once we arrive at another. Art is not reflection of humanity, it’s an attempt to understand the liminal space surrounding us. A painting or a piece of recorded music cannot stand still.
Dark Box is for two pianos, modeling synthesizer, string quartet, three analog tape loops, turntable feedback and a sheet of metal with a mic running through a phaser/flange. And a clave.

There’s infinite quality to the ocean, the space it encompasses floats outside of time, yet each wave, each tide flows with regularity. Each a separate occurrence. Though the waves look the same, they are individually unique. Much like us. With Ebb, I wanted a leitmotif to collide with an ostinato like waves overlapping the push and pull of a tide. So, the composition had to remain free and rooted at the same time. Again, I find this like us, everyone an individual wave, everyone a blended part of the ocean.  

Instruments include, 2 pianos, an Ensoniq ESQ 1 synthesizer, an amplified acoustic guitar with slight distortion, small percussion, vocals, and vocoder.

Prelude #2 features form as in nature, but with a slight blurring of that form.
